It was reported on the Drudge Report that actor Owen Wilson attempted suicide today, however rescuers got to him in time. The question naturally was, why would a top box office star do this. It is not out in the major media yet, but it will be soon. Speculation says that it might have something to do with his recent breakup with Kate Hudson. This is very sad. I'm just glad they got to him in time.

It's hard for us "plainfolk" to understand why a celebrity would try to and often succeed in taking their own life. After all, we think they have it all! It just proves that fame and money do not secure happiness. They have a dark side that perhaps they keep to themselves instead of getting the help they need. You are right, fpd. They go into it knowing that their lives will be an open book. They are always under public scrutiny. These are major questions they should deal with before they become famous. I think many types of performers have low self-asteem and do what they do to gain a sort of exceptance from a large crowd.How many times have you heard various actors say that they were shy as a child in school or that they were the class clown so as too gain attention. It's a shame when they never learn to deal with their inner turmoil and disguise their vulnerability. When someone suffers from anxiety or depression it becomes overwhelming to have to deal with a break-up in a relationship. It's just sad that someone who has so much going for them has to succuum to a suicide attempt. [pismeof]

That happens really.. Even if you are a top celebrity, someone famous or a millionaire.. Even those who doesn't have the money and fame can commit suicide for several reasons. Some are due to drug addiction.. Some do it because they are carrying a big burden and they think that they can't stand the pain anymore.. and maybe in Owen Wilson's case, it was maybe caused by their break-up. In this world we have to face so many challenges in life. Being a celebrity does not mean we do not have problems. Personally I think the more famous a person is, the more challenges he has to face. This is because many people know him and therefore more people put different expectations towards his achievement in his career. This is the price that a celebrity has to pay, he is owned by the public. Not being able to handle the pressure of being criticized by the public is a factor contributing to suicide attempts. His breakup with Kate Hudson can be seen as a failure in life. Maybe not everybody says its a failure, but maybe a large number of fans and critics had thrown harsh words which made his wisdom go out of control. I pity him. However I pray that he finds his strength to move forward. God loves him, that's why he's rescued before the actual attempt succeeded to take his life away. Ofcourse everyone is curious about the reason and the celebrities may have so many different reason it is hard to tell what is actually the cause. Also they may have some career related cause for it? We never know what the stars are going through. What with the lack of privacy in the personal life and all. That would b a bad kind of life to my way of thinking. Money can not buy love and happiness. My niece who was and even thogh is in mid 30's is a model and bit actor, has found that out. She was never a real big name but made a sizeable sum. Her sister who is a bus driver for the school of the town she lives in here in Kansas and also drives a semi tractor trailer rig part time and to me is a beautiful woman, is happy with her life. She has the looks and the talent that she could have probably went further than her sister but the happiness is the important thing to her. [nana1944]

It is alarming how some people nowadays have very low frustration tolerance. That guy is supposed to have everything except emotional stability. It is unfortunate that given the pain involved in break-ups, people still fall in love. It is very easy, when you see someone you love walk away into another's arms, to think that life is not worth living. Many people out there are attempting suicide for all the wrong reasons. According to CNN, the reason for hospitalization has not been announced and won't until later today (Monday). I wouldn't think it is related to break up with Kate, that was some time ago. [kareng]

I heard that some actors are manic depressives or are suffering from depression. Also that some of the medications they take on doctor's orders may increase that depression. They try to hide their illness behind a brave facade, being comedians, taking numerous acting parts, but soon it catches up with them. They also think that they can solve problems just as the characters in their movies can, and then when they find that they cannot, break down or people expect too much of them. It was shocking to hear and I am glad he is doing better. Money is great but it doesn't stop people from having severe depression. I just lost a friend to a really tragic suicide in June. He had it all - money, fame, respect, a wife and children, people who loved him. And he hung himself anyway even though he never showed signs of even thinking of doing such a thing. I guess, for some, depression is so deep that death seems to be the only alternative. Maybe Owen had been drinking or taking drugs. That usually plays a big part on getting up the courage to actually try to commit suicide. Whatever happened, I sure hope he gets the help he needs and becomes an advocate for others to do the same. Losing someone you love to suicide hurts and knowing that they were so tortured before but weren't helped hurts even more.
