Buy Or Rent

When it comes to VHS and DVD, do you buy your movies and start a collection, or do you prefer to rent them? Do you go to the Cinema often? There's a few of my favourite movies that I have on DVD or VHS in a small collection at home, but personally I find buying them and going to the cinema too expensive to do on a regular basis. I'd much rather own my favourites - the ones I can watch over and over, and rent the others.

We don't ever go to a movie theater. It is way too expensive, especially when you factor in paying a baby sitter, since I don't think my 18 month old would sit still through an entire movie. We usually buy movies if we are pretty sure we will watch them more than once. My son has a large collection already, because he goes through phases where he always wants to watch the same movie over and over. Right now it's the Elmo Potty Time DVD. He will bring it to me and say "Mama, It Elmo time to Potty!" He watches it almost every day. I'm not even sure when the last time was that we rented a movie. We are more likely to wait until it comes on TV if we don't think we will like it enough to want to buy it. [carlaabt]
We probably have over 200 DVD's at our house. We still watch many of them. I still love the old ones like "My Cousin Vinny" and other ones. There are lots of times I don't see anything on TV and my daughter and I will watch a movie from her collection. [OreoCookie3]

If I see a movie at the movies that I really enjoy I will go and buy it when it comes out. Other than that we rent using netflix. watch a movie, mail it, get a new one in two days! And its cheaper than Blockbuster! I love it. I like to go to the movies at least once a month. Its nice to go on an actual date every once in a while with my boyfriend. Sometimes staying in gets old, and we need to get out. [jess368]

I have a rather large movie collection but I have seen many, many more than I own. I try to go to the theater for the action movie where the big screen and good speakers make a difference for the special effects. I also like to go to the movies and prob go 1 or 2 a month. I usually rent the others from Netflix. I usually watch a movie every night. So I have a five at the time subscription. My very favs that I will watch again I usually buy or ask for, for Christmas. So I end with five or six new films in my library a year. Whats you favorite film? [Aurone]
My favourite film of all time is the Lion King. It's been my favourite since I was a child, and always will be, it's just so good =P My more 'grown up' favourite would probably be Requiem For a Dream. Just a touch on the other end of the spectrum.. =D [Malyck]

when it comes to DVD I buy my favorite movies for my collection. I seldom go to the cinema anymore except when the movie showing is really good. I just wait for the dvd copy of the movie to come out then I buy it. I agree its nice to have a collection of dvd movies, you can watcg them anytime you want. :-) [eprado]

Me myself, I tend to buy what I would like. I really hate to get them at full price($19.95 or more) unless I have the money to burn or what have you. Every so often, I rent them too to see if this is what I want or enjoy the movie. [Savvynlady]

It's been over a year since I've been to the movie theater. Most movies I want to see I just rent when they come out. I buy the ones I love so that I can watch them anytime I want to. There are a couple of movies I want to buy that I haven't been able to afford yet (the LoTR trilogy, for example), but eventually they'll be part of my collection. [wiccania]

I think downlode the movies from internet is convinent ,nowadays, we should take use of the convinent resoutses----internet.However,if we want to feel the movies better,we should go to the cinema! [lydia002005]
That's very true, downloading is definitely a great option nowadays, although it can be hard to get hold of certain films, or get the best quality.. Not that that stop anyone =P [Malyck]

i will rent them... if it is a big hit then i will buy the dvd.....butoften i go to cinemas [ravi_teja_023]

me and my hubby are not much into movies. We do go but very very rarely. He is very fond of classical music and has maintained a good collection of cassettes and DVDs and VCDs too. [pinnibabu]
VCDs are great =D [Malyck]

IN fact I have never bought a DVD or VCD since I own my computer. We can download the latest movie or any one we want to see. It's easy and cheap for us. Why not?If you make a plan to watch movie in the sinema, you should buy a ticket beforehand and buy a large bag of socks. But if we choose to watch movie on our PC,the above problems will not anoy us. [sictstarsky]
I mean food you eat when you are in the cienma,Not hose you wear on your feet.Do you understand?Maybe I used the 'socks' in a wrong situation. Thanks for your response. [sictstarsky]

As I do not watch television shows, I enjoy buying DVD movies to watch at home. I like drama, suspense, thrillers, detective stories, and musicals. Gone With the Wind is one of my favorites as well as Feet of Flames (Riverdance fame). Also enjoy Departed, The Negotiator. sunnywaters [sunnywaters]
The Departed is one of my favourites, too! Love it =D Sounds like I could happily watch a movie with you, Sunnywaters. =P [Malyck]

We rent our dvds from tesco's online, its much cheaper than going to the cinema and it means we can also catch up on series that we missed.its great because you can have up to 3 discs at once. we do try to get to the cinema for a few films like recently we saw the simpsons movie, because some are just meant to be seen on the big screen! we own quite a few of our favourites but they tend to be ones we've seen already and love! [eidur47]

I find that I will buy the ones that I know I want to add to my collection because they are cheaper to buy when they first come out. If I'm not sure, then I just wait to see it on cable or might rent it. Then I sometimes will wait a few years to buy it after the price has gone way down. Just depends on the movie. We also borrow movies from the library since its free. [Laurla98]

I get them from netxlix and watch them if they are good and worth watching again then I will buy it. I don't go to the theater to often it is to expensive. My son and I did go see I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. [hip2bemom]

I wait until movie comes to the $1.00 movie Theatre and watch my movies this way . [Shatterstar]

Cinema in my city is getting more expensive each day. It is outrageous. I prefer to rent a movie and even buy a movie if I liked it, than going to the movies. [Daelin]

For some reason most of our rented DVD's don't work in our DVD player. It always says "no disc" on the screen when we press play. Yet, when we buy the movies the DVD player works fine. So needless to say, we usually buy all our movies. Some DVD's will work from the rental place, but none of my Harry Potter movies did until I bought them from Walmart, and those worked. [OreoCookie3]
I'm not much of a tech-wiz, but it might have something to do with the region code, as some dvd players won't play them... It used to happen all the time until we got a cheaper dvd player =P [Malyck]

We don't do either. Our library has a huge collection of DVDs and videos so we take them out. If we really love the movie then we'll buy it used on Amazon. We've saved a lot of money that way. We haven't rented a movie in at least 8 years now. Going to the movies for 4 of us is way too expensive right now. I find that I don't enjoy going to the theater as much as I used to. Besides if one of the kids has to go to the bathroom we can pause it at home or rewind. If that happens in the theater you miss it until it comes out on DVD. [crochetmehappy]
And just think of the size of the drinks they give you there. It's almost like they want you to miss part of the movie so you have to buy it when it comes out on dvd. Besides, trying to get the kids out through all of the people quietly is a nightmare. [crochetmehappy]

When it comes to movies I usually just download them from the net.But for some films that i really love i buy them and then download from the net so that the dvd doesn't become worn by the continuous use. [lantisb3]

First - guess what - this discussion is on the hot list. I'm the same I like to own the ones I love and see the rest on the computer like vongo. However, vhs and dvd will never replace going to the cinema. There is something about losing yourself in the big screen that can't be replaced. I especially like going on a hot day when everyone else is at school or at work. Its so cold in theatres that I need a jacket - I love that. I eat things I normally don't - twizzlers or popcorn. Or - don't tell - I bring a yummy wrap in with a bottle of water - rather than paying 3-5 dollars for the water there! [artemis432]
=O The hot list?! =D YAY. lol Haha, is there still rules against bringing your own refreshments to the cinema over there? They tried to bring it in a few years ago and there was a bit of a protest and we won. I always take my own water - cheap as... free =D I'm with you on the right 'cinema weather' there's too many people when it's 'yucky' outside, I love going on a hot day. [Malyck]

I usually rent them unless there is something I really like then I'll buy the DVD. I also go to the movies quite frequently if I find there is something I want to see. I just signed up for the Blockbuster online thing and really am enjoying it. No late fees, and the best part of all is you get the movies in your mail box every other day. [tomysole]

I haven't bought a dvd or vhs in a very long time. I think buying them is a waste if you end up not liking the movie. So I just rent them and if I like them cool if not they're going back to the video store. I don't watch a movie more than once anyways so it doesn't really do me any good at all to buy one. It's way too expensive to watch in the theater or to buy them. The last time I went to the theater it was a few months ago and the movie wasn't real good either. [pebbles_cubbie]

I have been buying movies for a long time, but it s gets expensive and I don't have place for them any more, plus some of them I really don't like.So Now I just rent them and I like any movie a lot, I buy that one. [laurika]

I would prefer to buy my own DVDs, but usually on holidays around Christmas or Easter, we rent a few. Most of the movies we watch on the Movie Channel, and TCM, and that is when we decide if we want to buy a DVD of that particular movie. Many of the movies we receive as gifts. I do have a few favorites, but much of what we have is what we got as gifts for Christmas and Birthdays. [suspenseful]

Hi,Malyck! I just buy the DVD which I think it is worthy for collection. I always download movies from websites and in the dorm, there are four computers here and my dormmates and I always download different movies and enjoy them in our leisure time. [shinjiao]

I like to make a collection, especially korean or japanese drama. They always good to watch over and over again. I have some western movies too, but only when I found it great and want to make it a collection. Some of my western movies collection got to be Lord of the rings, X-man, Spiderman and even Mission Impossible. Yes, they all action movies. But I do have some romantic movies too. But mostly korean and japanese movies. I went to theather few times in a months with my friends. We all crazy about movies, and watched in big screen is really fun. Like last time we watched Transformers, wow...that's good. Really love it in big screen...Great effect, great sound and funny movie. [jc_star10]

I rent movies that I want to watch. Although I have few movies that I'd like to have a copy of my own to keep, but never had the chance to buy them. It's a waste of money and I have too much stuff gathering dust around the house already. I do not want to add some more. I seldom go out to movies anymore. I just don't have time. I we can collect time, store it, and retrieve it for use later. I'd sacrifice more money on that than CD's, DVD's and stuff. [Ricko82]
I've thought of that too - that afternoon that lasts forever - when you're waiting for that night or the next day. Store it up for later. [artemis432]

I like going to the cinema but it is too expensive. I have never understood people who collect videos and dvd's. I have many of them but they never get watched! Renting makes more sense. [nikkiwith]

for older movies , i would rather rent a movie coz its cheaper. i can rent a vcd or dvd here . for new movies i watch it in the cinema for the sound and big screen . coz i know i won't enjoy an action or horror movie in my home . [mikecrush]
Fair enough, makes sense, really =D [Malyck]

To be honest, i buy dvd cd but the pirated only, coz the store for original one is not that accessible in my place. Same with the cinema, aside from it is too expensive, i can't even go without someone just to watch the movie i like, so i prefer watching dvd cd only. [a_ce_e]

i hav started collecting from only last year. ihav nearly 100's of them. i wil rite then in DVD through ma friends or relatives n now i hav no place to keep the others. so i hav planned to get a shelf for tat. [deadlydawn]

I love watching movies at the cinemas. SO, dont buy DVD's a lot. I would rather rent the movies I havent seen. I think they are unnecessary baggage if u r moving around. [divinelight]

Well, it is better to buy DVDs of all time favourite and personal favourite movies because, it can also be a small collection of our own and also we can always take it and watch it whenever we feel like watching. But some movies which worth only one time watching need not be bought, renting would suffice. [surajpkn]

I buy them. I have a large collection and recently got ripped off by my so tenants son. He borrows and lies that he returned them to me so Ilost somehwere about 30-40 movies. I love to be able to watch them over at anytime. I dont buy as much now becsueI hae the cable but buy now and again and I dont lend anyone. People are 2 dishonest [Sharon38]

honestly i dont go to cinema that often....maybe twice for 3 months.... kind of weird but true.... i cant afford of watching all the movie i want into the cinema and i honesty cant wait for their availability in vcd for long time so i have no choice but to buy some reproduce copy of the movie.....a little bad right!!?? ^_^ [no_chao]

When I had to choose between buying of TCP or a DVD and renting that I would definitely go for a renting that the Willie because we have a DVD writer at my home and so whenever I bring a DVD on a VCT on rent I can easily copied it and then added to my collection and save a lot of money from buying the origin and I think there is no harm in it as I am not earning any money from the particular copy and just keeping it from a personal use. This is a nice thing to do and let me tell you I have a huge collection of movies and whenever I get time to watch them and I enjoy them. [amitavroy]

I dont like crowd so I would prefer to buy my movies and have them to watch anytime. I even rent mine too. [Sharon38]

Hello malyck!(",) We don't rent, we just buy.(",) We have so many DVDs already and let others borrow as well. We have the collection of our favorite shows so that we can watch it anytime we want. It's more practical to just buy because in one DVD you can watch 10-18 movies. It's really worth it. Great day!(",) [lani0529]
