So many movies are remade.
Every so many years they recycle already made movies.
Do you care if the movie has been made a thousand times or do you just stick with the original? Do you watch them all before you decide on a favorite.
My mom will watch all of them, but always has a favorite.
I tend to go with the original. There are some that made before I was born so I never did see the original so I have watched the remake. Sometimes I didn't even know the movie had been remade til after I watched it.
I never did watch the original The Mummy with Boris Karloff, but did see it redone with Brendan Frasier.
I also watched The Planet of the Apes remake. I didn't like either the older or newer versions.
But I don't want to watch remakes of Footloose, The Karate Kid, Halloween, or Friday the 13th.
Why mess with a good thing? That is what I think.
What do you think?

responses and comments:
Sometimes, the original version sets a sort of standard that you would expect the remake to follow...and since remakes don't always go with the original, it might not be as good to you. I usually like both versions, but I tend to prefer remakes just a little bit more because they are usually higher quality, with better effects, and more entertaining in general. But I still enjoy watching both. [moneymaker92]
I did see Clash of the Titans advertised and that remake does look like it might be better. Maybe it depends on the genre of movie that is redone. [Ruthep]
I prefer the original myself. There is too many remakes out there. In fact, the movie Psycho was redone awhile back. A film which did no justice to Alfred Hitchcock. It's one of those movies where you scratch your head and think "why?" [palegemini]
I like to watch both and compare. There are times when I prefer the original, and others that I enjoy the remake more. For instance, I think You've Got Mail is a bit better than the original Shop Around The Corner and I prefer the more recent Father of the Bride with Steve Martin over the original with Spencer Tracey. Then again, I like the original Parent Trap, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Oceans 11. However, there are those movies that I appreciate the original and the remake like Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sabrina, Reluctant Debutant/What A Girl Wants and The Manchurian Candidate. [vjenkins86]
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a classic. Gene Wilder is perfect and that is another movie that should have never been made. [snoopyfan]
I love watching both! I love watching the original because it's something new and different obviously but I also love watching remakes because a lot of the times you can view it from a different angle if you get me, and rather than watching the same movie over and over again with the same actors and stuff you can see it played out differently. I also like to compare the remakes with the originals which can be a lot of fun :-) [Iram786]
They are making all kinds of movies from our teens Beautyqueen. I don't like it. [Ruthep]
For me,its fun watching movies.I love watching both the movies..Its like checking out... I love watching the original version most of the time, first, because it's something different and new ..The idea comes for the first time in a original version.I also love watching remakes of good movies and I always compare it with the old version. The differently new viewpoint in the remake always interests me. [tuyakiki]
It can be kind of interesting to see how one person can take the same story and come out with something completely different on screen. [Ruthep]
i have to admitt, i feel the same way you do about originals. i don't like remakes because it takes away from the integrity of the original. when something is a classic leave it that way. i don't mind what they did with the old exorcist. they just fix up the picture to digital and put it back out in the theaters. that i really enjoy. even though the movie came out before i was born, i love the classics because they are classics. the movies now-a-days are all sooo...generic and obviously geared towards stimulated the lower senses. no substance, so why mix it up with something that was good. [MoonGypsy]
Very true. Sometimes all they have to do is re-release a movie or remaster it and re-release it and it makes tons of money. They did that with all the Star Wars movies and it worked. I also prefer watching older movies. I watch very few new movies, even if they aren't remakes. [Ruthep]
Hi Ruth! Most of the time I will prefer that the original is the one I prefer! I very rarely like the remakes! But, I have to say that when my boyfriend and I watched the remake of The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three with Denzel Washington and John Travolta I loved it! I probably was very young when I did see the original because I didn't even remember the cast or the movie! I loved this remake! It was amazing! But, mostly because of Denzel and John!lol Once in awhile I will actually like a remake, but usually I will thing that the original shouldn't have been tampered with! But, since I always try to keep an open mind, I will always give a movie a chance!winkwhistle [Opal26]
I never did see that movie. But I don't watch too many Denzel Washington movies and the hubby hates John Travolta so there we are. But I never saw the original either. Some remakes I like, but so many I remember from when I was a teen and I loved and I just don't want another version. [Ruthep]
I collect movies that i like to watch every now and then, depends on my mood and depends on the kind of movie , if it's action or drama. well, the current ones are adventurous to watch because it's new. [tigerdragon]
Yes, the newer ones are better for the effects. And maybe the stunts too. They remade Clash of the Titans and that one actually looks better than the original. [Ruthep]
Usually the originals are always better, but sometimes a remake is really nice too, as they can use the latest technology and give really nice effects for us viewers. Example, the new mummy was really nice and it had really nice effects something which could not be done in the old one. Although i like original movies most of the time, a remake is not the worst thing in the world. [falakdoshi]
No, it isn't the worst things. But sometimes I do wish they would leave things well enough alone. [Ruthep]
As far as I am concerned, I think I prefer to watch the orginal movie, which will give the orginal meaning of the movie that he wants to give us audiance. For the remake one,it usually chane some the orginal meaning of the movie ,in this way, I do not like the remake one at all. So happy to see the director can make more orginal ones. [monkeylong]
Yes, sometimes the director changes it so much, it really doesn't seem like the same one. I like the original ones most times too. [Ruthep]
I agree with moneymaker92. Originals would set the standards and remakes are different from them. Usually, I don't know that some of today's movies are already remakes (Wow, there is an original The Mummy? That's interesting. happy). When I find out that a movie has an original version from long ago (maybe around the 80's and as far as the black and white era), I try watching the original versions and have fun comparing the details between originals and remakes. But for classics like The Karate Kid, I think it would be fun especially for the younger generation today but I wouldn't want to watch the remake even if it stars Jackie Chan and Will Smith's son. Speaking of classics, I love the original 12 Angry Men. When I knew there was a remake, I watched it because it starred Jack Lemmon. I'd say the movie was all right, but it can't bring the vibes and atmosphere from the original. Even though the original is old and in black and white, I still prefer it over the remake.rolleyes I guess the standard would be set from which one a person has seen first. If I saw the original first and saw a remake later, I might prefer the original over the latter. If I saw the remake first and really loved it, only to find out later that it is a remake, I think I'd see the original too. I think I'll appreciate the original but I might prefer the new one. Pardon me, my whole statement is ironic. silly [EnslinPorter]
Hahaha, that's funny lol I think 40 isn't that old, and age is just a number wink Me, I wasn't born yet until late 1980s. I think that's why I get interested to see old movies, even in black and white...makes me curious as a cat. Thanks for the reply by the way. This a nice topic on movies.happy [EnslinPorter]
i like watching remakes. how they put more creativity to the original cut, it's fun. but it aint too much fun if they take out the nice parts of the original. but nonetheless, i respect original films because they set several standards and trademarks. additional characters are just fine, though. [goddessjes_29]
I don't mind if I have never seen the original or never knew there was one. I think a lot of people like watching remakes. And I will admit some are better. [Ruthep]
It depends for Me if the remake is bringing something new to the party that the previous version was needing, and not just a retread of a story with an in vogue cast and state of the art special effects..Foreign Movies get remade by Hollywood for the English speaking Market when the patience to read subtitles or improving Your Language skills would show you a perfectly good movie too..Which makes Me glad they had the sense to Leave "Amelie" and "Crouching Tiger" Alone! I have 2 of the 3(+?) original French "Taxi" series of Movies on DVD about a Pizza delivery Boy who made enough money to start his dream job-the world's fastest taxi driver! He takes as a fare a plain clothes cop who can't drive, and gets caught up in a case where a German Gang using racing prepped Mercedes' are robbing Banks..The first Movie has been Remade with Queen Latifah in the main role starting off as a NY Cycle courier, and the Bank Robber Gang are now Brazilian Supermodels! Kurosawa,an acknowledged Great Director,Enjoyed the American Western Movies and Made a "Tribute" Movie "The Seven Samurai" (Stop Me if You've Heard this one before...happy) It got remade in Hollywood as...(Drum Roll) The Magnificent 7...sometimes,remakes work..But I'm with you on The "original" movies You grew up with-You don't need to see them redone! [ShepherdSpy]
I never knew that Taxi movie was a kind of remake. I never did see it. Never thought it sounded too great. What you describe sounds better, not so stupid. [Ruthep]
If I have not seen the original movie than I would like to see the remake first and then the original, Just to check the difference. But if I have seen the original movie I would not like to see the remake as the story is known. [sumanadep]
That sounds pretty good. I have done that a time or two myself. Sometimes it seems so odd how things are different from remake to original. [Ruthep]
I like to watch the original ones and i like to watch the remakes unless i know its a remade film. Its a psychology that we always compare these remade films with the original once which may affect badly the film collection. So , anyway, i like to watch the original ones... [abhaijith]
I always am comparing too. I find it hard not to do that as I am watching the remake. So it tends to ruin my experience. [Ruthep]
Movies are so realistic and imaginative part of life,I guess. There have been and will be many more highly talented individuals and team of crew to get us the stories and documentary with action, comedy, horror, and lots of similar attributes.Original is original and none can rep[lace it as such, even though as you too say copies of it can be made.Made ever better at times and at times makes it loose the entire beauty of it. Changes are made most often to the originals and presented with the slightest of the themes of the real one but many people do like and follow what the new brings, but at the corner of their mind they would think of the original one too and that's the achievement of the original,I say!Among the many languages in our country, movies get remade and dubbed into so many languages and between them too.I watch many of them and most of the time its a flop, rarely does a movie being remade gets a blockbuster hit in our country.Hollywood has seen many remakes get to top,you listed The Mummy, which is so realistic as its been made with the new available special effects and makeovers but the older one that I am hearing for the first time would not match to the visual extravaganza,I guess.happy Well movies are meant to be watched ,never mind if its The one or The other. [tintukm]
Yes, the older Mummy is no where as advanced. So many things they could not do when it was made. I really wouldn't want to watch a movie that had been dubbed into another language. But I am sure that is probably the only choice on some movies. Either that or not watch it. I just think I would prefer subtitles. [Ruthep]
I did watch some but not all of the remake. And i have favourite too. I never watch the mummy original also. But i watch planet of the apes original and also the remake(marky mark). I have to say mostly i like the remake than the original because they tend to be more realistic, including that of king Kong. [tluanga]
King Kong was very popular. The first one was made in 1933 and the 1976 version was a vast improvement visually. But the last one was even more so. [Ruthep]
Somehow Ruth, I always tend to like the original of movies better, like a lot of things really. I just feel that excellent movies such as you mentioned cannot ever be remade, as it detracts from the quality of it. Like I could never imagine anything comparing to The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland, the irreplaceable. [OceanTiara]
I can't imagine The Wizard of Oz redone. I know they did The Wiz but that was a bit different. I tend to like the original best. It is just like how the movie was really and truly meant to be made. [Ruthep]
i wonder it's depend on each person's interests. i quite like watch the movie with a good story.but if the movie is worth of remaking, and the actors can performance well ,it's should be fine. i will consider to make the decision wether or not i wanna see it. i tend to go with the original in the cinema and see the remake at home. i think [wll521998]
A good story is important. And for me, the actors are too. Some I like better and some people I just can't picture in a certain role. [Ruthep]
It is very rare a remake is any good. I never seen it but I heard Cape Fear was a great remake. Then you have the nightmare remakes I did see Halloween and hated everything about it and no I did not see the sequel to it. I also stayed away from the Psycho remake because you can't recast Norman Bates when Anthony Perkins was perfect. I don't plan on seeing Footloose or Karate Kid. I haven't seen the trailer but I heard Jackie Chan is in it and that is reason for me right there to stay away. If a remake is done with the respect and they get a great cast it may work. What you don't want is a remake and while watching all you are thinking about is the original. One more they are remaking is Nightmare On Elm Street without Robert England so you know that is going to fail right there. I did like the first Mummy movie with Brendan Fraiser I didn't like the second one and never did see the third. As long as the writing is well done and you have a excellent class I would see it. There are some movies I wouldn't touch so I would have to consider both factors. [snoopyfan]
Robert DeNiro is good. I love snoopy too. [Ruthep]
Well I agree with why mess up a good thing, and sadly it only seems to be the good movies which tend to get the remake treatment. They would be better off taking a rubbish movie and trying to make it better through a remake. As for me, well I try to watch the originals before I watch a remake so I can get a taste of what the original interpretation was and what has been improved upon in the remake. More often or not the original does tend to be superior because in the days gone by there was more emphasis on telling the story rather than just plying a movie with effects and star names, as is more often the case now. One of the few remakes which I actually prefer over the original is Ocean's Eleven because they did it right, they kept the essence of the movie which was the story and then embellished it with star names and styling without ignoring the substance. Shame when they made the sequel they forgot this. [thedailyclick]
Ocean's 11 was very good and George Clooney was his usual cute self. I didn't see the sequels again bad reviews. [snoopyfan]
i agree as to why mess something which is already good. :) they should not remake a good film unless they can make it better. loving classic movies, hmmm... i wonder how can they revive "the 7 samurai" of akira kurosawa? may be dragging at some points but never failed to impress me with the shots and the throwing of dialogues. :) [cherrc]
Some people think they can make it better. They want to tell it in their way which, in their mind means better. [Ruthep]
Well, for me it all depends on which movie it is. I can understand making sequels, but some movies are classics and they should not be tampered with. [agrant10]
I have noticed a new trend with sequels that I find a bit disturbing. They did it with Dirty Dancing and Without a Paddle. They make another movie with the same name, put a 2 behind it or something to say it is different like Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. None of the characters or actors are the same. But it is roughly the same story. But a true sequel can be good. [Ruthep]
I like the original more than the remade actually, just coz it's the first version, every remade is based on it, and I guess in human mind there's some order, the first thing gives biggest image and memory inside the brain...I haven't watched any of the movies you mentioned above, but I do like the original one, and I do agree with you, don't understand why people like to remake things, maybe they just happenly have empty mind, nothing new comes out, so they decide to remake something old? Not only movie, TV drama also has remade things, and sometimes they remake movie into TV drama, hehe... Good day and happy mylotting! happy [lindazhao333]
Who knows, maybe they just wanna add something new from their own, but it's hard to beat the original one, when the audience has already some image in their mind... Also it's the one who made first version, who's creative for the theme, remaking is just somehow following up... happy [lindazhao333]
these days, and at this juncture in my life, i really don't find much time watching movies. i enjoy reading books more, to the sound of my favorite music. that's what i call simple pleasure. but given a chance, i would like to see a remake of an old movie i have already seen. there surely are changes, and i expect to see those things myself. also, we find greater value in a remake movie because it's some sort of "show respect" for the older version. so, naturally, a remake will try to outdo the original. and that's what i expect and wanted to see... [bystander]
it's the link on the notification that's not working, ruthep. thanks, i finally discovered how to bypass it and get to the comments/responses. happy [bystander]
Hi, Ruthep. I have watched many movies that were made original. But, I have also watched many remake movies and these movies actually ended up being pretty good. Some original movies are considered to be good too. [cream97]
There are good remakes and bad remakes. Some, I just can't bring myself to watch because the originals were classic movies to me. I have never watched the Pink Panther movies with Steve Martin. I love Steve Martin but he just is not Clouseau to me. [Ruthep]
For me my friend it depends... sometimes I like more the original, or there are cases that I love more the remake... if it is a holywood movie... then I would chose the original version... but if a local movie to holywood film, then I would chose the remake which is the holywood... Visual effects are so good... [primeaque86]
Well, it depends. Sometimes the original is better and sometimes the remake is better. I think it depends on the directors and the actors performance. I liked a lot the new version(never saw the original)of "The Miracle Worker" about the life of Helen Keller. Melissa Gilbert did a great job on that movie I think. The funny thing is that her teacher(Patty Duke) is the woman that played 'Helen' on the original movie many years ago. Here is the same scene on both original movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHwoRFe70jk&feature=related remake http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvo9rbCLliE&feature=related [Mady2791]
Yeah both versions are good. Very good actors on both. [Mady2791]
