I have to admit that I like turning the subtitles on even if the movies are in English because I understand the story more in that way.
English is not my native tongue and most of the time actors in the movie speak in slang than I don't understand them very much. And at times they use some words I don't really know. So it really helps me when the subtitles are on.
Do you still turn the subtitles on even if the movie is in English? happy

responses and comments:
I do turn them on! even though english is my first language I turn them on because sometimes they speak so quietly that I don't hear what they are saying. I don't like to miss anything the first time around... so this really helps me catch everything =] [wickikitty]
I agree. There are times that actors speak softly that you can't even hear a word. And the worse part of it is, you are missing some important details that will help you understand the whole story. [gracie04]
i don't really like too but sometimes they are too slang. i am asian and even my country have hundred dialect i still can understand movies that are too slang. so sometimes i rather have the subtitles. [jollibee]
I am also asian, specifically Filipino. I assume you are a Filipino too because of your username. I also would rather have the subtitles on because there are some words that are said differently in some places. I mean the intonation and the diction. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
I don't turn them on. Since I can understand the people I don't see the need for it. If English isn't your first language though, I can see how the subtitles will help you improve your English. [Uroborus]
English isn't my first language but I guess it is the second one. Subtitles really help improving my English especially when the actors are saying words that are unknown to me. ' And also, it helps when they are discussing something technical. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
No, but English is my native language. Maybe if I were learning still I might, but since I am fluent I don't. [Bethany1202]
I guess I am not yet fluent in English. I am a better writer than a speaker. And maybe also in listening that is why I need some extra aids like subtitles to fully understand the movie. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
English language is my second language, So I must turn the subtitles on the make me more understand the movie story. Previously, The subtitle I turn on is my mother language, but now I try to watch movie with english subtitle. So I can improve my english and the way to speak. [winzpc]
It really can improve English and the way of speaking. I like turning the subtitles on especially for detective stories when all is so secret and the only clues that the movie gives is through the conversation. So it really helps me understand the movie. have a nice day!happy [richiem]
I do not use the subtitles a lot if I am watching a movie in English but sometimes it helps to have them on even though I can understand what they are saying,I do not know why but it is sometimes easier to get a grasp of what is going on if I can hear them speaking and also see the subtitles of what they are saying, and besides the subtitles help me keep up if I am on the phone or something and can not pay complete attention to them speaking. [hellcowboy]
For me it helps. It is really easier to get that they are saying and to understand the movie more when I can see the subtitles. And also, I don't miss some important details while watching the movie. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
If it has features like that, I would probably turn it on but, some people don't want to. There was this one time during a Shakespeare class during college that our professor simply didn't like watching a play/film while the captions were on. Stressing on listening as well as associating the dialogues with the performance of the actors. If the film I'm watching doesn't really have that much 'slang' in it, I wouldn't utilize the subtitle features, and some films that I get to watch have weird subtitling.. [ratyz5]
So its not distracting when the subtitles and the film itself are both in english.. Have a nice day as well (^_^ ) [ratyz5]
No but English is my first and only language. Well I know a little German but not fluent. I don't really like subtitles. I think it is distracting.blink [Ruthep]
For me they are helpful rather than distracting. But if the subtitles are inaccurate, that is the time they become distracting and that is when I turn it off. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
It is good to turn on the subtitles as my husband would usually do the settings for the movies. If the movie is an original one the english subtitles are okay. If the movie is a pirated one he would sometimes turn it off because the pirated movies' subtitles sucks - its just irritatingly inaccurate. [eagle_f15]
I know what you are saying. I have seen a lot of pirated movies with defective subtitles. It's like the subtitles are not for the movie I am watching and for something else. that is they time I turn the subtitles off. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
Only sometimes, when for some reason or another I cannot understand them or they are too quiet. The movie Rescue Dawn was one I had to turn the subtitles on because all of the actors seemed to be mumbling. [ArsonCuff]
The subtitles really help when the movie is too quiet. And I think subtitles make the movie more understandable. I don't think I have seen Rescue Dawn. Have a nice day!happy [richiem]
I turn it on, because sometimes I can't hear the movie clearly, and I kinda feel to read the text while watching a movie. [strossuss]
i only prefer to turn the subtitles on when it's other speaking language movie but if it's already english speaking film, i dont anymore because it normally distruct me from focusing on the acting becaue i just read on the subtitle most of the time. but it's a good thing subtitle thingy was born because it's helpful though.. [thaMARKER]
We always do because sometimes you may hear something incorrectly or just plain miss it is it is too low. [Barbietre]
I always watch movies with the subtitles on. I even watch television with the subtitles on. My 8 year old watches his cartoons with the subtitles on. He says it helps him learn to read better. [lilybug]
hi yeah i do bcoz being an Indian i sometimes find it difficult to grasp the american accent,so these sub titles make it easier for me. [amirev777]
I don't put on subtiles for any movie, but my 8 year old does. I don't mind because it helps her to read the words. So I do encourage her to put them on. [cookie1971]
Yup, i do turn on the subtitles too.. hehe Although i do understand and speak english, but sometimes due to the different accent and slang of the actors speaking, it's quite hard to make out on what they are talking especially when they are talking very fast.. lol So by turning on the subtitles, willm ake me understand more about the whole movie as well as their dialogue ^_^ [kun2349]
English IS my native language but funnily enough I too like to leave subtitles on in a movie wherever possible. Especially with movies that are a little complex because it gives me that extra edge to understand the storyline a little better sometimes. It also helps having them on when my wife is trying to sleep so I can keep the volume down and still watch and understand what's happening in the movie..... [James72]
Yes, I do turn them on as well. It was quite easily to understand the plot and dialogues of a movie in this way. Actually, I specifically buy DVD that have a good subtitle and kinda feel sad and annoyed if the DVD that I bought have no subtitle or the subtitle wasn't good or have unintelligible sentences. Really a big help for me to put subtitles in the movie I am watching. happy [kylie_quistis]
Yup, me too. Sometimes the actors have their accent/slang or there are some who just can't talk or pronounce clearly - like Sylvester Stallone. I really have a problem understanding what he says. And if I'm watching movies in the middle of the night, the volume has to be turned down. So subtitles really helps!happy [lazeebee]
I'm not a native English speaker and even though I get the movie well without the subtitles it's easier to read along while watching it. I don't like to put on subtitles on movies in my own language and 8 out of 10 times they don't even have them. Really awkward as this would be much better for the hearing impaired. [cyberfluf]
english is not my mother tongue also. so i do turn on the subtitles.but but i think its hard to see and reading the sametime.so i cant enjoy the movie wen doing both jobs. [amyshameer]
yeah, i do. english is foreign language for me as well. without it, i can not figure out some sentences. [gabbana]
Yep I turn them on even thought my naive tongue is English too, because sometimes their slangs make it hard to understand and to me the subtitles makes up for what I would other wise miss if I try to concentrate on what they are saying. [gtdonna]
Yeah, I do! Once in a while, I love looking at the subtites which are mostly wrongly dubbed (in pirated copies!). As for the korean and japanese movies, I surely turn on te subtitles and read it to understand what was bring said. [everlasting]
Yes I like movies with subtitles. I enjoy the movie more because even if it is in English, some spoken words are not so clear. Subtitles make me understand the movie better. And English is not my native language also. So it helps more. [kidjuwee]
I do it even if the movie is in English. Not a native of an English speaking country and therefore subtitles really help. [headhunter525]
I don't, if only because I've been so used to watching Japanese shows/dramas that once I see a subtitle flashing at the bottom part of the screen, my attention is automatically drawn to it and well, if the movie's already in English, I'd usually prefer to pay more attention to what's actually happening in the movie. =) English isn't really my native tongue but I'm comfortable enough with it. =) [nekonyanta]
Subtitle is turned off whenever i am watching. I get easily destructed by it so i turned that off. Besides , a lot of times subtitles are different from what is being said. [ronacruz2007]
Dear friend, I mostly turn it on as you noted those slags it is bit confusing and difficult at times to understand and more over my too native tongue is not English. I do often could read those subtitles so as I could know the movie better and more than that I could also just low down the volume too.happy [SHAMRACK]
Yes I do turn it on. As you said in your post I don't know english either. As english is not my mother language I get less scopes for practicing english. Though I am not that dump not to understand what they are saying. Still I don't want to miss a thing. Moreover it helps me to know its spelling, it helps me to improve my word-stroke. Sometime the actor or actress used to through the speech so quietly that it is relly hard to understand what are they saying. Sometimes the native speakers stumbles to understand their whispering speech. [niv_musicman]
Looks neat over your side. We don't get the option here (or I don't know how LOL rasp). [lordwarwizard]
I turn them on too. English is my native language yet there are times I cannot hear or do not understand what the actors/actresses are saying. It is so nice to have the option of subtitles. I love it! I also love to use them on movies as well. It amazes me when I go back to older movies and find out I misunderstood a line on some of my favorites. I do turn them off when I am requested (my sister, for example hates to have them on). GREAT discussion! I appreciate you bringing it up... It is good to know so many people enjoy using them as well! :-) [trulydreaming]
oh yes i guess it just happens naturally. The other day i was watching a movie called the hurricaine and for some reason my eyes kept going there...wonder if it happens with a lot of us. [monishavakil]
If it is an English movie with characters who's native tongue is english, I dont turn the subtitles on. But if it is english and the main characters native tongue is not english like Jackie Chan's movie, I turn it on. Althouh I understand it most of it, sometimes, I dont understand Jackie Chan, he speaks fast sometimes. [trishasantos]
I always like to have the subtitles on, even if the movie is in English, because I have a hearing loss (though I'm not actually deaf) and so sometimes it can be hard for me to catch what the actors are saying to each other. My partner complains about this somewhat though he does understand that there's a reason for it, but the subtitles do tend to distract him from the movie. He wonders how I can watch the action on the screen and see the subtitles at the same time lol. I tell him it took years of practice. rasp [angelwhispers30]
I too like to on the subtitles of the movies.. The fact is because i am an Indian and the the English spoken in movies is a little bit faster for totally understanding the movie. Also the subtitles help in understanding the motive of movie. [mindhunterpk]
argh nooo not subtitles i cantttt, it sytracts me away from the actual film lol i end up just watching the subtitles rather then the movie...oops lol [doppyblonde]
If possible, I usually turn off the subtitles as English is my first language. However, I watch quite a lot of foreign movies and then I would have to have the subtitles switched on. I think it is great to have the option of switching on or off the subtitles as some people don't like to see the writing at the bottom of their screen while watching a movie. [Alexandria37]
Well, we don't have the option here. You are talking about normal TV? Well, that's the only thing I have anyway. When I watch the TV program, I can't choose whether to have the subtitles on or not. Anyway, I prefer to have them around since sometimes, I might miss the words and reading them at the same time is useful. Especially if names are involved so I like to have a better idea what I am hearing. I can understand both the language of the audio and visual so it is not an issue. [lordwarwizard]
no i turn them off. i dont really need the subtitles, they just kind of get in the way. but of course i speak english, its my first and only language, so i can see why you might use them since english isnt your native language. the only time i use them is if its late at night and i have to turn the volume down on the tv [aville44]
I often turn them on if the person i'm watching with doesnt like the tv load.. aka, they hear better than i do. I have damage to my ear from a beating i took and it makes it hard for me to hear. I don't always turn them on though, there are some people who find them really irritating, in which case i just sit there and wish i could hear something. [BrokenDoll]
Yes, its really destructing to watch a movie having English subtitle in. I often read the words they saying than rather enjoying the show... [alecz23]
I use the subtitles because there are times when the phone rings and I don't want to miss the dialogue. I can talk and read at the same time...now that's odd!...lol DCMerkle [DCMerkle]
No I never turn on the subtitles when the movie is in English. I can already speak english so there would be no point of me turning on the subtitles. And second of all I hate subtitles so much. They annoy me to death. One time I turned on the subtitles and I couldn't get them off so I had to look at them the whole day. And my subtitles at my house aren't even on key when the person says the words. SO ANNOYING. [lala501]
I only ever out the subtitles on if someone is hovering or doing something really noisy and I want to continue watching the movie. I tend not to start watching movies when subtitles are needed as they tend to annoy me since the audio is faster than the subtitles and then the subtitles do not really show the emotion in their voices and miss out half of the words. [Elixiress]
Funny that you mentioned it. As a matter of fact, I do. I don't like it but when I'm not observing myself I find that I begin to read the subtitles. It can be irritating. Cheers!! [underdogtoo]
Hi friend, yes i do.I like to turn on subtitles while watching movies. Like you, english is not my native language. When a get movies,i just check whether it has any .sub files. If i can't find them, i go to www.subtitles.com. download the perfect subfiles. [ajesh_pullad]
I still turn it on for greater experience. Movies like Rocky sometimes the speech is not understable so subtitles sometimes a help. It also helps accurately understood every details they are saying especially the drama that are too serious and long. Even the cg sequence of a video game have subtitles, even a documentaries in tv have subtitle. [megaman2000ph]
i have the same habit with you.english is not my first language, too, the subtitles can help me to understand the movies more.i think many person have the custom, hehe! [pengpendi]
I do and Like you I can also follow more and understand well but when I am watching a movie with my hubby, I will adjust to him since he doesn't like to have it, it destructs his attention!LOL!happyhappyhappy [checapricorn]
Yes, we do and I get spoiled. We started out turning on the subtitles because we have a little noisebox (aka daughter) but now I am so used to having them on that I like to always have them on if possible. This also enables us to have the volume down if something may not be appropriate for her to hear, or if she is sleeping so the sound doesn't wake her up. My taste is all over the board, from family friendly and comedy to horror and psychological thrillers, so captioning is a nice feature... well until she can read it LOL! [mommyboo]
I always turn on the subtitles... because there are times when the dialogues are quite difficult to hear since they are said in a whisper... and i do not want to miss anything that might be important to the whole storyline of the movie... it would be great if they will turn of the subtitles of movies in the movie houses... [aseretdd]
yeah sometimes i turn the subtitles on while watching a movie, coz i want to understand it clearly. have you notice that sometimes you can't understand what they're saying coz the voice is low or maybe they're talking fast. so in order to understand the whole story, i will turn the subtitle on hehehe.. [jinxky]
Nope. Although I turn them on if it's a non-eglish movie. I would rather read subtitles then the usually lousy translation jobs. This is ESPECIALLY true of Japanese stuff I watch. [jsmith12]
i actually hate subtitles...so when its English i don't turn on the subtitle because some subtitles are just annoying...it doesn't fit the right words the character say and it bothers me all the time..another thing is that when its on i focused so much on it even if i don't want to..so i don't i hate subtitles.. [angel_of_charm]
Though English is my native tongue I do like to have the subtitles on during some movies. Some movies it is impossible to hear just what is being said especially if there is some back ground noise in the movie. Sometimes it is just easier to keep up with what is being said with the subtitles turned on. [deebomb]
I like to use the subtitle feature even if the movie is in English.happy There are some words that I sometimes don't know and it is good to know the spelling. lolThe only problem with using the subtitles is that you sometimes miss the details of the scene because you are to busy reading the subtitleslol [Muelitz]
I some time turn the sub title to understand clearly to that and I have to learn lots of english. [kisanchhantyal]
i turn the subtitle off.its enterupting me. [bombshell]
I turn them on all the time because I have a slight hearing problem, and that way I don't miss any dialogue. Also I don't have to turn it up loud where it might bother anyone else. [myklj999]
I'm so sorry for coming in so late. However, sometimes I also like to read subtitles for the same reasons, mentioned by you. But not always. [suruchi86]
