How Do You Decide Which Movie To Watch

These days there are so many movies being released and so little time to watch them. I don't like to waste my time watching boring movies. I also hate to come out of a movie theatre thinking "the movie was a waste of my money". So I like wait and watch or read reviews of movies before watching a movie. Reading reviews lets me understand what type of movie it is, is it a family movie etc. So how do you make your decisions?

i know what you mean. I just watch the previews and I guess I just feed into the advertisements. Whatever looks better to me, I will talk to my friends about seeing and the one that we agree on the most we go see! And that's about it for us. Other than that I wait for them to come out on DVD, and one of my friends will get it and I'll just borrow it. If it's really good I buy the DVD. [here2learn]
Friends who are movie buffs do come handy. [VANILLAREY]

I don't go to the theater. I just rent them or watch them on television, then I don't feel like it's as much of a waste -- but I do like to read reviews. Usually I don't see them until they've been around awhile so there's plenty of time to gather information. My friends and family are the best reviewers, because they have taste that's pretty much the same as mine. If they recommend a movie, I know it's worth watching. [Susannah5]

Before viewing a movie, I read several online reviews by the critics and comments from the public. I look for what kind of ratings and content the movie has received. Also, I check out the summary of the storyline to see if the script is interesting and how well the actors portray their characters. A lot of my decisions are based on who the actors are going to be in the movie. [dasani]
Wow, you really investigate about the movie before watching it. [VANILLAREY]

I normally judge a movie by its trailer. I know that it can be misleading sometimes but then most of the times I get my decision right. However, when I decide to watch a movie, i would watch it on the first or second day of its release itself. I don't believe in reading newspaper reviews because I doubt their integrity. One newspaper would rate a movie excellent and other would give it a "poor" rating. the same is the case with magazines and news channels. Even in my own friend circle, different people would have different thoughts about the same movie. Thus, when I decide I have to watch a movie, i simply go and watch it, without caring about the reviews either before or after watching. [jshekhar]

I usually read the reviews and I really hate movies that are introspective where the hero changes and there is a lot of internal struggles in it. There has to be a moral lesson in the movie - I am a sucker for the old black and white 1940 and 1950 movies, thrillers, and mysteries, and I hate a lot of talk swearing so if the movie has the characters saying the f word when they are not getting their thumbs smashed, or feeling all emotional about something, I do not watch them. There has to be a lot of thought, the story has to be well told, and it has to look as if it is a real place, because if it is not, and the actors are stilted, I wasted my time. [suspenseful]

well, to me... I love horror movie or funny movie. So, I will pick the hottest one. I like to see the review first and if I like it then I will pick one. [smileonstar]

Well I tend not to bother with movies at the theatre but wait for them to be released on DVD. What I tend to do is discover a trailer which interests me, and then I will have a dig around reading reviews for it both from professional critics and your average joe who writes a quick review of a dvd on Amazon. Then if I still feel like it may be my sort of thing then I will either buy it or rent it. What I have found myself doing a lot more is when I buy a dvd on Amazon I will discover a movie recommendation on there and these often turn out to be movies which suit my tastes more than from when I watch a trailer. But it really does boil down to checking out a variety of reviews as to whether I will spend money on a movie. [thedailyclick]

I watch the preview of a movie first and if I like what I see than I go and watch it. [katie472001]

I look up what the story is about, the actors, the director, and the producers/production company. I have several favorites and I have never been let down by sticking with them. Generally the plot of a movie and the directors/actors/production company completely influence my decision to watch a movie. I never really pay attention to critics because we don't have the same taste. [LiveLove]

Well nowadays am not a die hard movie fan but usually a trailer will decide whether I watch the movie or not. (most times trailers really are not that impressive) I haven't been to the cinema lately as I prefer to go down the HMV store and look at the movie collection. I do read reviews if they happen to be in the newspaper i'm reading but nowadays I've totally lost interest in movies and I prefer to watch the classic good old time movies. [jellymonty]

I think when I want to watch a movie, I have must have nothing to do other than that... because I am not a big fan of movie, I only watch it every once in a while when there are something really interests me. I mostly just prefer to watch comedy because I just want to have fun and have a good laughing time, don't particularly care for the love story, action movie is cool as well. I make the decision with the person that I watch movie with and most likely the person will be my sister so we can always decide together easily because our preferences are similar. [mermaidivy]

To be honest, I normally judge by the trailer. If the trailer looks good, I go and watch the film. Sometimes I don't get around to it and then download the film later. Sometimes I buy them, but I prefer to download them because it's free. [Sparkz95]

By watching the advertising...like on tv....if they peak my interest then I'll go. I don't like reviews because they are one person's opinion and can make or break a movie before we even have a chance to see it... [jillhill]

That's an easy one! Let's say, if it's a Friday night and it's after 11pm then there's a good chance that any movie will have some kind of horror or thriller theme to it! I love watching late movies especially those with lots of blood, guts and gore! I do try to focus on reviews myself, they tend to show the exciting aspects of any movie. I think that Friday nights are movie nights for me generally! Andrew [AndrewFreyne]

these a days when i am bored i watch movie in internet i have website that's i can watch movie for free i like the kind of movie suspense and horror thriller and scifi i have a list of the great and cool movie here the title i give it to you chainsaw massacre frieday the 13th wrong turn 1,2,3, final destination 1,2,3 bride of chuky the day after tomorrow drag me to hell, creep 1,2, the messenger house of the wax that's all enjoy watching i hope you like it. [jen14ed]

i love watching movies ., so whenever there is a new one come out i always make sure to watch it on weekends ., i love comedy romance movies ., [myliezl0903]

i SIMPLY DECIDE ON THE BASIS OF PROMOS BEING AIRED ON THE VARIOUS TV CHANNELS...REVIEWS IN PRINT MEDIA AND TV...THIS IS HOW ONE GETS TO KNOW ABOUT THE MOVIE...OTHERWISE MAKERS OF THE MOVIE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO SAY THAT THEIR FILM IS GREAT. ..AND BY THE WAY HAVEN'T SEEN YOU ON MYPAGE5 OF LATE...ANY REASONS.. [sn_singh56]

Yes I know what you feel because going to see a boring movie is a waste af money just because of how expensive they are now a days. I usually watch a preview on tv or maybe read a review about it. For example when I seen the preview for the new Fast and Furious I knew I had to see it and it was great movie. [ERich79]

grab a penny and do it by lcuk first find five movies and go eliminating one by one... ok easy right [snapandsnap]

The trailer usually gets me! Sometimes I am sad to discover that the best bits in the movie were in the trailer and that is unfortunate. I have heard a film advertised on the radio which appeals to me, having found out what the story line entails; I don't know the actors in it and I have not seen the trailer but I am still curious to see it. So it is trailers and story outline for me. happy [paula27661]

I can fall easily when watching movie trailer. I think all the trailers interesting! So I will make a note in my cellphone then when I go home, I think I'm silly. How can I think all the movies interesting? I search for its review and then decided whether to watch it or not,, and if I wanna watch it, I will watch it in cinema or simply buy dvd.. BUt when I going out with my friends, usually they like just to stop by at cinema and pick whatever movie. The most important is we can watch movie together. I don't like this, so I prefer eat at restaurant than watch unclear movie.. [ChrysanTflower]

Before watching movies, i see movie poster or cover. what can i see ? i can see movie director name, actress name and actors name. The most important thing is director name ... Director is the lord of a movie. so i see director name on movie cover or poster. then what i do is DVD or movie cost :) hehehe. Then i decide the movie i chose for above reasons. [disneyboy]
Actually I think basing it completely on the director is a bad mistake.Renee Harlin is a good example. He was great director, then he made Cutthroat Island.Never base it soley on who the director is because you never know if they're just having a bad run or have gone to the well one too many times.KING KONG is another example.Peter Jackson stunned the world with Lord Of The Rings, then came out with this piece of crap adaption to a classic monster movie. Basing the worthiness of a movie by who is directing it is like basing the worth of a movie by who wrote it.Stephen King is an AWESOME author, but a lot of the movies based on his books were crap.Or even better, basing it on a franchise.Star Trek and Star Wars are great examples of this.In the Star Trek franchise, only every second movie seems to be worthy, while with Star Wars, only the original trilogy is good while the prequels are a waste of honest time and a shill to grab more money from fans. SO you can't base the worthiness of a movie on one thing.....cuz you will be disappointed, beleive me. [SweetWhiskerz]

I usually go to the ones that interst me. reviews don't help me because i'm subborn and want to find out for myself. [JoelleRenee]

if i like the music of the film ill definately watch that movie in theatre or on my dvd player. [shikha_1851985]

Lately,a childhood connection to certain things has come in handy, like for the Transformers movies or even the movie UP. But nine times out of ten,I listen to my friends and not the movie critics. The critics take so much away from the movie-going experience, they basically take the fun out of it. Granted, some movies they are right on the money about, but in other ways, they marr the viewers enjoyment by taking the reason people go to movies and making it clinical instead of enjoyable. G.I Joe was a perfect example of what a production company should do:They didnt let the critics see it before hand and let the audience at large gauge its worth and popularity...THAT is what movie-going is all about, letting the audience decide whats good and whats not, because critics are just too cynical to enjoy a good movie. [SweetWhiskerz]

First, it is my favourite genre, then actors then second, Newspapers and internet reviews. I read this reviews to determine what is the movie that I am most likely to wanna watch. lol: what matters most is what my fiancee wants to watch at the end. I just set the influence... [AngleSpeed]

Mind you, just because a review is good, it does not mean that it is entertaining. It can be a slow artistic film, where your eyes may have problems staying open to I go with the hype. I trust reviews sometimes, but at times I go with what friends recommend. Why? Because my friends review a movie the normal people do, not some high class reviewers who may be out of touch with what the people want to watch. [starlight70]

I will first read the reviews in the newspapers just like you. Then I would look at the directors. If these are famous directors such as Peter Jackson or Michael Bey, then the film is worth considering. Next, look at the film stars. Nicholas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Di Caprio? Are they famous ones or B-rate? If they are AAA stars, then the show should not disappoint.Lastly, is it an action movie? If it is, then I will watch it in the cinema and pay for the tickets as I will definitely be seeing special effects and great sound effects too. [jonjee0203]

I usually watch the trailer of a movie before deciding if I would watch it or not. I also find out the maker of the movie, the director, and the actors and actresses. I almost always go for Disney and Pixar movies. I guess I'm just a child at heart. I avoid horror movies because I don't like getting scared and I certainly won't pay others to scare me. Sometimes I watch a movie when I've read the book from which it was based just to compare the movie adaptation from the book. [angelajoy]

There are many deciding factors. The story /topic behind the movie plays the main role in the decision making. I go for movies starring my favourite actors/actresses. Also based on genre as I like fictional, mythological & supernatural movies ,I go for these movies mostly. Ofcourse, the Director of the movie has to be considered too I consider the quality of special effects too based on the movie trailers & the theme songs of the movies Try considering these factors, then it will definitely be worth going for such movies. [chosen9]

I watch the preview of movies on TV and if the previews look interesting to me then I will probably go see it at the movie theater or rent or buy the DVD. [happy6162]

I like to read or watch the reviews too. Some are never right. I like to see the epic type movies on the big screen regardless of their reviews. Then the others just are seen by me if I want to at the theater. I have Netflix and they bring out the new movies pretty quickly so I usually see them that way. I love Netflix! They are quick and have so many to choice for aside from the new ones. I really think they are great! [celticeagle]

I generally go by the reputation of the director in making good movies and the actors in choosing the movies if they are the old ones or if they have made a decent number of movies. But, if they are new, then I read the reviews on sites like imdb and generally go by the rating given by the users, though sometimes the rating might not be a good indication of how good the movie actually is. [aslesh_t]

critics most often decide for me. i go to rottentomatoes.com and see the consensus on the movie. but oftentimes, the trailer of the movie can convince me to go watch the film. even if i know the film is bad. [versio9]

Same here. I do not have the time to sit and watch a movie unless it is a good one and those are hard to come by anymore. My husband picks the movies and I will watch it if it turns out to be a good one. [stephcjh]

I choose what to see by if I am interested in the plot. I see the promo and it tells me all I need to know. These days some tell more than I need to know.I usually go for action films and suspense films. I rarely like romantic comedies ,especially the ones these days. [sarahruthbeth22]

usually i will have look at the demo,i luv in funny & action movies. If the movie's background is almost in dark,i will not watch this movie, coz dark made me fell unpressed [natalieliu]

Hello my friend VANILLAREY Ji, Exactly , if I remember we watched a Movie in a thetare in 2003, while in USA, as we wanted to have stict of US Theatres. It was 'KAL_HO_NA_HO'. As a rule , we never go or you can say after introduction of TV, we had reduced and now it is totally withdrawn from our life. We restrict watching on TV with reservation , never at a stretch. It is also in installment. There are better options available around to refresh than once upon a time Movies. May god bless You and have a great time. [maygodblessu44]
