I go to the movies every here and there but I'm telling you the prices of going to the movies is really rising in price, right along with purchasing popcorn, drinks and such. If it's a movie I just have to see I will go, but alot of times, I just wait for it to come out on DVD and it's cheaper.
Right now the going price to watch a movie around my area is 9.50 (adult) 6.50 (child) 7.50 (senior)
And every so often the price slowly keep creeping up. I remember when it was 5.50 to go to a regular movie and not even a matinee.
How often do you go to the movie theaters? Is it the same price in your area? Does the prices discourage you from going and rather wait to see it once it comes out on DVD? What are your thoughts?

responses and comments:
Interesting. The movie ticket actually costs the same in US and Singapore. Here, the peak price is $9.50. And no, the cinemas stopped the child categories LONG AGO. If a child wants to catch a show, it's the same price. And no, neither is there special discount for senior citizens. I do remember a time when tickets were more affordable. It is really heart-bleeding to catch a movie nowadays. For half the time, I just rely on movie vouchers redeemed from my card. :P [lordwarwizard]
Big Dollars for the Big Screen...they don't discrimate on age preference..lol lol [mzbubblie]
I do not go as often as I used to go. I used to go once or twice a month when the prices were more reasonable but now I only go when I see a really good movie coming out or hear about one. It is very costly to go either at day or night. My next movie will probably be in May when Spiderman 3 comes out. I also never get concessions due to those costs as well. It is cheaper to wait and watch it on dvd rental or pay per view or cable. [kgwat70]
I can understand that, I hardly ever go anymore, unless my friend wants to take me out to the movies..lol.. Other than that, just as you, I wait as well.. [mzbubblie]
I used to go to the movies almost every week, years ago when the price is affordable. When the price starts to increase, I limit my visits. Now, practically, I do not go to the movies as i find it very costly just to watch a show. Watching from a DVD is very much cheaper. Imagine for a family of 4, how much savings there will be from watching a DVD. Even for 2, there are some savings, unless of course, I just want to absorb myself in the big screen, cool aircon and nice comforting seats :P [whyaskq]
Ya, I even thought of converting one room to to a 'mini-theatre' and... I would be richer by few dollars. LOL. btw, thanks for the best response ;) [whyaskq]
I don't go very often. Probably the only time is when their is a new kids movie and I take my daughter for a treat. It is just so darn expensive. My son and his girlfriend go all the time. There are many I would like to see but I don't go. I wait for it to come out on DVD and by the time it does I forget the names of the ones I wanted to see. LOL [coolcatzz]
Yes, that happens to me, I happen to be looking and like Ahh yes, I remember that one. But the dvd's are the way to go now a days [mzbubblie]
I watch movies at theaters occassionally. At our place it's not that costly. There are many promotions on mobiles to get free tickets and it's pretty easy ,actually. All you do is answer some right questions and if your answers are right ,you get to participate in a draw to win mobiles. If your name doesn't feature in the draw ,then they still send 15 people movie tickets for a new movie. I do watch DVDs as well and it's fun .I also download a few movis from internet. These are the ones we ( me and my friends ) want to watch instantly, lol. When the dvd is out on rent and we aren't feeling like struggling in the traffic we turn to the mighty internet, lol. [bluewings]
Yeah,I like the promotions, too. It costs us to sms 10 answers, but it's much less compared to the movie ticket :-P [bluewings]
I have never gone to a movie theater wow ,I like to watch movies at home at the tv or at the computer :) [Mariusxzoner]
Frankly speaking I never go unless I get a free ticket. It is too costly to watch movie here. [farahi]
Movies in my town are $8.50. If you want popcorn and a drink, then add on at a minimum of $6.00 but those sizes are tiny. We usually end up buying a large drink and popcorn and that's about $12 and our theatre allows free refills on large sizes so we get refills on our popcorn on the way out and I microwave it the next day for a snack and it tastes fresh and delicious. We go to the movies at least once a month. I enjoy watching movies at home too and we rent a lot of DVDs and I would say that we do that at least twice a week. [gardengalz]
Oh well that's really cool. Yes there are refills on certain size drinks and popcorn, but again, it's crazy, I can't imagine what the price will be 5 years from now [mzbubblie]
I have not been to the movies in a very long time. I received gift cards for 2 movie theaters but have not went yet. My wife and I need to find a babysitter and go though. It seems there aren't as many movies that are must see so it seems like a wast of money to go. With ticket prices and the price of the candy, you are looking at around $25. I believe the last time my wife and I went to the movies, we went to the dollar theater. We are fortunate to have one of those around here. They play movies that have just stopped playing at the bigger theaters so they are still new, and yes the movie is only a dollar. The two biggest factors holding us back are the cost of movies and finding time to go. [jrbear]
Watching from DVDs and in cinemas are both two very different experience. You get into a very good atmosphere when you are immersed into the movie with a whole room of enthusiasts. Laugh and get shocked together. DVDs can't achieve that. Even though DVDs are more economical, I will still prefer to go to the theaters. And, I would prefer catching the movie once it appears in the box office rather than wait and hear the stories from your friends and then procure the DVD when you already know half of the story already. Almost every week with my boyfriend. Both of us are really into movies and would love to go out even once a week to have a movie date. hehe It's really nice to watch on the big screen but yeah prices are increasing, I can see the gradual change of prices. If we can't go to the theatres then we just watched movies at home eating just anything, lying down and no one to catch us sleeping.. Prices doesn't discourage us much but I know that it would partly affect on how much money we have.. [maucute]
Well I go to the theaters approximately two or three times a week. I go to movie screenings for free. I don't really mind but just imagine going to so many and getting tired of them. By the way when a movie comes out called "Superbad" do yourself a favor and go see it. It's freaking hilarious. Nonstop fo show. [koikoikoi]
I refuse to pay the exhorbitant prices for movie viewing. Unless it is something really big or hubby and I are celebrating some special occassion, we will not go to the movies. We wait for movies to come out on DVD. Fortunately, one of newest perks of my job (college professor) is a 'movie night' where college students and faculty get in free. I may start going more often now, as we will only have to pay for hubby's ticket. [crazynurse]
Yes, I know what you mean, I hardly ever go now-a-days due to the prices with getting in, let alone the popcorn and everything else... [mzbubblie]
With my small allowance, I don't go to movies anymore unless I really like to watch the movie. Renting DVDs can save about 70% of what you spend on movie theaters. [karantso]
To be honest..I used to go theatre often but depends on the theatre which is too cheap...I wont go if it is costly..will wait for the DVD to get released.. [cutebaby4]
I used to never go to the movies because I couldn't afford it. Now we go about twice a month. It isn't very cheap though. I remember as a teen going every week because we had a $1 cinema. Those were the days! cindy [cinnabunch]
I always go to the movie threater once a week and honestly, i don't notice much about the price becasue i always go free:P, but i guess it's the same price. I love go to movie threater because it's crowed, fun and we can enjoy the big screen with lots of people and it's happier when we can go with our partners, enjoy popcorn and Pepsi together. I love to watch movie in the threater more than in DVD, although it waste money, we can have fun . It's the big deal. [becuttieusa]
Oh my, and I thought $8 for a ticket here was high. yikes :o With popcorn & drinks it's close to $30 for a movie night out for two! We went to cable long ago so we could watch movies without the high prices. You just have to wait til they get to cable. We recently upgraded to the digital cable package so it's frees up some funds & we can splurge with a few movies on demand each month and it's only $3.95 per movie. Now, an at home movie night costs less than $10 with nice comfy seating and no one talking behind you. Shoot, I can even pause or rewind in case I miss something. LOL [paidreader]
I don't go very often. Before my kids were born, my husband and I went on occasion, even with the prices that they were. The last movie I saw at the theater before my oldest was born was "Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World". After that I didn't see a movie in the theater until "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown". As there are four of us now it makes more sense to wait until a movie is out on DVD, rather than go to the theater. [sacmom]
My family usually waits for the movies to come out on dvd also- But on occasion we head to the movie theater. I'm going tomorrow to see Premonition. I cannot wait- There is a movie theater in town that is small- only 1 show -- it is pretty reasonable- matinees are $4 per person- So my daughter and I'll go on the weekends when they show kid movies-- We can watch the movie, get popcorn, water and soda and candy for under $15.. Not too bad! But most of the time we wait.. I love watching moveis at home- you can stop them to use the bathroom, sit on a comfortable couch, etc. [KrisNY]
I dont go like I use too. Its to expensive for me. And if I go I wait till a matinea. Also with all the movies being on video I rent alot of movies. [TerryZ]
I use to go to the movies all the time but they are to expensive nowa days between ticket prices and snacks. The only time me and the girlfriend will go to a movie anymore if its a really good one that just came out that we want to see but if not then we usual can just wait till it comes out on dvd. I really like getting out and going its just to expensive now and with gas prices constantly soring who can even afford to go to the movies anymore. [7nicole1]
Not very often, I only go to the movies when movies get high ratings. I spend wisely on movies and I dont watch movies for the sake of watching it. [Zelmarq]
I KNOW what you mean! Its $9.50 for students gad it used to be around $8.00 for students. Thats for AMC theaters we like best. We have a theater near us and students its just $6.75 so its not AS bad. Okay so I just went to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles MIDNIGHT showing Thursday night. First for me at 12:01am. It was good but very packed with really hyper teens *L* ;) I go to the theaters every few weeks depending on money and movies too. I love theaters over dvd but will go only to see ones I gotta see now rather then later. Some movies are better seen in theaters then dvd as well. My dream cause I love movies (own around 200 or more DVD's) is to get a flat screen tv someday so I can watch them like the theaters. Its a dream far away but still :)) [monkeywriter]
Here its 5$ everyone. I go when theres a good movie. thats like twice a month but i rent a lot of dvds. [sylar18]
if there is a really good one that i want to see, i go with one of my girlfriends. my husband doesn't like to go to the theatre, and we really don't care for the same ones, so when they come out on dvd, we will rent one from the payperview on our cable. its cheaper than running to blockbuster, and then having to return it. pretty soon, with the technology they have, we wont even have to leave our homes anymore! [lpetges]
We go about once a month to every other month. Ticket prices in my area are somewhere around 7 a person think its a buck cheaper if you see a show before 5pm. I rarely go see a movie unless its something really big that you just have to see in a movie theatre kind of thing other than that its wait for dvd. [EvanHunter]
for me i never go to theaters because i had my own dvd and even the computer help me a lot watching good movies. i think it s so comfortable watching inside your room, so free and not hardly getting to theaters anymore.... [xenybb]
Yup! it keeps getting higher. Here in the Philippines, it goes up 20 pesos in just a year. It's really sad. Me and my girlfriend always tried to go to movie houses every week. I prefer it over DVDs because sounds and the wide screen really helps to get you entertained and enjoy the movie. Unless you have great entertainment room in your house then go for the DVD. Just also like to try the IMAX thing for the upcoming Spiderman 3. Hope i could get a seat just in time. :) [tugushk]
Oh Imax is really cool, we have two here in Washington DC area. I really like it. You should go, you will enjoy it to the fullest [mzbubblie]
i used to watch movies in cinemas everyweek. but now, it very often nalang. [rye736]
I don't go Theaters any more if I want to see a movie I wait for DWD,last date I'm going to theater is in the year 1995 I think.it was in S,pore.last I buy the ticket with $5 prize.it's was 12 years ago.now the prize is surely increase. [iamin2u2]
i dont go to movie house as often as before. the price is too much now. here in the philippines it cost php125. the average price for rice is 25 pesos, half kilo of meat is 75 pesos. it will cost you one descent meal if i go to movie house. that's why everywhere you go pirated cd's/dvd's are rampant. it is much cheaper and they come now in 12 in 1 dvd movie. piracy kills artist, piracy kills legal business. piracy kills the economy. [rainmaker19]
It is more than 2 years since I last saw a movie in the theater. Now I watch movie only on the TV channels or on cable, on cd/dvd they are much cheaper and also I have lost interest in going to theater for watching a movie. [tonyxxx]
Yeah, I know for me the price is the reason I don't go as much as I use to. It's too much now to go to a movie. I can see it being 10.00 one day soon already. Everything is just getting higher and higher [mzbubblie]
I don't often go to theaters .As the DVDs are cheaper than viewing films. But some cases arises that the film must me seen in the theater itself.Films like Titanic,Mission impossible Etc should be viewed in the Theaters not in home. [n_nijaz]
Oh well, when I was younger, my dad would always take all three of us, me and my two older brothers to watch Fernando Poe Jr. movies. Yeah yeah he's a fanatic! But when I went to college, in order to kill time, I would go to the movies all the time ALONE! Sometimes I would just sleep in the theater! lol. But now that we have DVD at home, I no longer go through the hassle of commuting and get out of my comfort zone just to watch something when I can do it right in my own home. [dianavarro]
Considering the cost of the tickets I stopped going to movies. Whenever I feel I should see a movie I purchase CD or DVD of that particular movie and see it in home itself. Only in case a movie considered to be the best and to be watched only in Theatre then I take a chance to go to Theatre and watch the movie otherwise it is too expensive for me to see films in Theatre considering the present price of cinema tickets. [navtech]
During my high school days, I always go to movie theaters, now, I often go because I just watch in my room, with my cds, and dvds, youtube is also a great impact for me not to go to movie theaters. [Jamian]
Oh I have not gone to the movies in years, I would rather watch a movie on a dvd or television as it is just so expensive to go to the movies now plus when you buy the little extras it costs quite a lot for one day. But when my children were young I used to take them as I felt it was only right to take them there to see some of the movies that were advertised on our televisions. [kathy77]
Yes, I agree when my son was younger, I would take him, or when he was in summercamp, they would always take them to see a movie at least once a month. He enjoyed that alot himself [mzbubblie]
Yeah !!!!! the ticket prices in India are also rising. so much that I have forgotten which movie had I seen lastly. Therefore I rent a DVD or download films from Internet and view them. [pachheda]
I don't go to movies now that I have kids. Unlike before when I was still in College when I can go and watch a movie thrice a week. Believe or not the last movie I saw was Superman Returns. Though going to the movies here is not really expensive since the fee is only almost $2 (converted to dollars). I still cannot find time to go and watch a movie of my type. [domesticengineer]
Oh wow, I wish it was 2.00 here, they are crazy with prices, it rather turns me off for themost part [mzbubblie]
i seldom go to the movie because the price here is really ridiculous... it is $15 on a regular day and i think it is too expensive... i watch movie from DVD most of the time... i might go to the movie if the film is really really nice and i want to hear the good sound effect... then i will watch it in the cinema... otherwise, like you say watching it from the DVD at home is much cheaper and more relaxing... [lingli_78]
I haven't been to a movie in about a year. We went last year for my sons birthday. For 2 adults and 3 children(ages4,5,and7) it cost us $56 just to get in. Then you add the cost of popcorn and drinks which was another $40.I couldn't believe that a movie could cost so much. We decided after that that it would be much cheaper just to buy the movie when it came out on dvd. [KissThis]
I go to the movies at most once a week. I like the movie experince. I don't normally eat during movies so no popcorn for me :p [webdrifter]
I haven't been to the cinema for MANY years, i live in the country now so the closest one is a long drive from here, they're also very expensive & even if i had the money to go, i also have a baby to think of & whether there's even anything i want to see. For me, i bought a big TV with a surround sound system so i just hire the movies when they come out on DVD & can sit at home with my much cheaper popcprn & drinks & enjoy them in the comfort of my own home! [Gemmygirl1]
Yes, the big screen is the way to go now-a-days. I want to get me one myself... [mzbubblie]
I think watching a movie at the theater has its own fun. People just watch the movies in their homes, but they forget how much fun and enjoyment it brings when we go to the theater with our friends and family. [gastly]
personally, i don't like going to the movies since the place is dark. In highschool I go to the movies since my friends keep on irritating me on going there. So when I go to the movies I'm forced. Even now that I'm in college I'm forced to go to the movies because my boyfriend loves to watch movies. And he says it's the only private time where we can be together since when we're in school or in the downtown area we might be seen together by my mother. Well yah prices have gone high. In my city it's 50 pesos when before it was only 30. [franxexces]
Watching movies on the big screen is really something, it is a better experience. However it is true that the price of tickets are really going up and its kinda hard on the pocket. We are only able to watch movie on the big screen twice a year. we really choose the film that we're going to watch and we set a budget for it. [jsae29]
I know sometimes with the prices, you feel that way. I know I do. I go when I can most the time [mzbubblie]
before, when i was still in college,i stayed in a dorm so my dorm mates and i would go watch a movie once a week, or even watch two straight days, when there are lots of good flicks to watch, but too bad, i don't have time to watch a movie on a movie house,we just rent dvd's so that we coould watch it with the kiddos. [kagandahan]
It costs about $9 to $9.50 during the weekends. I find that very expensive so I don't go very often to the movies. Probably about twice a month, maximum. Usually I'd choose to visit the cinema only to watch the epic films where it would make a big difference when watching it on the big screen because one can feel the full impact of battle scenes, etc. Otherwise, I'd wait till the DVD is out and then rent it. There is something special about watching movies on he big screen than at home. There's this nice atmosphere about watching it with many other people at the same time. Plus the screen is so big so it makes all the scenes appear more dramatic than if one was to watch it at home. But it's convenient to watch it at home though, because one can watch it at any time. And one can fast forward, pause, etc. Full control. Still, I prefer the cinema. So I'd go to the cinema more often if it were cheaper. [velvetprinzess]
I am living at Bangladesh. Here ticket cost is not very expensive for movie theater. So I watch it atleast one day at every month [sikhan]
we don,t really go to the movies anymore because of the prices! The movie come out to dvd so fast now anyway its really not worth going. [amaappleama]
My family and I love movies and going to the movie theater is great but the expense keeps us at home. We are a family of five and I couldn't tell you the last time we went to a movie, especially as a whole family. I remember going to the theaters once with my middle child in an infant seat and they charged me for her, full child price, I was outraged! Prices are nuts for the ticket and then they rip you off even more for the snacks. When we do go to the theater we always stock up on candy for us and the kids and sneak it in. [kakemafarm]
well the movie rate are getting higher here too... it is around 250 rs.. for a perfect longue of movie.... and the refreshement apart....so it rather goes like 400rs. per person... that way even we people prefer to stay at home and enjoy the 'homely' version of the movie on my DVD player...or sometimes my PC too, as it offers me a great sound system.... [KetanGulati]
For me if I get a good review of a movie I do not mind watching it on a big screen with my closest friend or my hubby .. some popcorn and sandwiches alongside .. my idea of a fun movie .. well if the movie isnt very great its better watched on DVD than in the theatre since I dont want to be disappointed when I come out of the movie hall saying oh what a waste that was ! Reviews work for me .. i dont rush into watchin a movie in any case .. [andysminky]
Yes, but sometimes for me the reviews don't do it, the trailors do it for me. even though sometimes they ONLY put the good parts in it..lol [mzbubblie]
Not very often, maybe like 1-2 a year. The movie prices are about $6-7 dollars for an adult and about $4 for a child, so normally we just wait until it goes on dvd at blockbuster and then we rent it and pop our own popcorn at home and watch it here. It's cheaper and with 2 young kids it is nice to be able to pause the movie for bathroom breaks and drink refills. [deesamps]
I can't even remeber the last time I went to the movies...as far as I can it was about 6 years ago ..there is no movie out there that i want to see bad enough to pay $7-8 for ..I can use my star on demand for alot less and that would be the cost of starz for six months ...plus save the gas to go too...I am cheap ain't I ...lol I don't watch enough TV to really even have the starz package added to my account but they do have a great kids section..my little one loves Eloise and they have her on almost evey week ...If I relly like amovie and I wil watch it more than once I will go and buy the dvd ..but i will noy go the movies to see it ...there are many movies that i haven't seen yet but I am still alive and well ...my eighteen year old thinks that she will die if she doesn't get to to see then newer movies that have come out ...lol I just have to laugh at her and say well its your money but I know I could put $15 worht of gas in my truck before i would pay that musch to go to the movies...between the movies, the gas ,and your snacks its almost a small fortune now a days ...so I will stay at home and just watch whatever whenever ..plus I can prop my feet up at home while watchinga movie...lol [lifeiseasy]
Yes, I feel the same way you feel. I rather wait and get a good movie from Blockbuster or Netflix. My own cheap popcorn, drinks, and can be just as happy...lol Don't even have to go anywhere. These prices are really getting to be something [mzbubblie]
