become expensive. Even adding the movie channels to satelite TV seems expensive now. Do you watch movies the same amount or less? Do you rent, watch on TV or go to the movies? what are the prices like where you are?
$8 adult cinema, $6 matinee, $4 for kids
$3 a movie to rent $10 more a month on satelite for a couple more stations, $15 more for more than that, but it seems like they have the same movies over and over. AT my brothers, I only like about 1 movie a month anyway, so it doesn't seem like it would pay for me
What's the best deal for you as far as movies go?
[question posted by writersedge]
responses and comments:
well we do rent movies once in awhile but not that often...what we do is go to the library (sure they may not have all the up to date movies, but you can still generally get a good variety and one that you havent seen!) [cher913]
If you have a library near you, that must be really nice. Our nearest libray with movies is 25 miles away and miles away from where I go shopping (at least 4 maybe 5). When I used to live there, I used to borrow music tapes and videos. I didn't realize how lucky I was until I moved out here. I wish our tiny library had movies. For people who live near a library that has movies, that is the best deal. I hope people will go to their libraries and check out the movies. Right now, I'm only in that area once a week and they only loan them overnight or for a couple of days, but if I ever move back there again, I will definitely do that. Terrific response and an option I hadn't even thought about. I think you've done a wonderful service for many people today. Thank you very, very much. Nice to hear from you cher913. [writersedge]
I use Netflix and love it! For a small fee, you can watch as many movies each month as you want. There is no set amount of time you are allowed to keep a movie, there are no late fees. You order the movie online, it shows up in your mailbox, you watch it, put it back in your mailbox, and the next one on your list shows up in your mailbox. It is VERY fast shipping too. I mail one movie back and the next one is in my mailbox within three days total. You can opt to get them one at a time, or 2-3 at a time so you don't have to wait. [Ldyjarhead]
$4.99 a month and free shipping? How do they do that? That's amazing! Until my lack of funds stops, I won't be able to join, but once I get another job, it's definitely something to look into. Right now I'm just watching the movies we already have, but this is a really good idea. You see the commercials, but you really don't believe it could be cost effective with the price of mailings. Thank you very much for your idea. Take care [writersedge]
My family doesn't go to the cinema because its too much here. Our prices are the same as yours. We do however have the package on Satelite for the movie channels but we dont rent any on the pay per view because it usually ends up sneaking up on you and at the end you owe a ton of money. We usually rent a movie or 2 every weekend though. The store by our house rents movies for 2.49 a movie so I dont find that to bad. My hubby and I are big movie fanatics so we own alot of movies too and will watch them as well :) [shootergirl78]
We buy some too if we know we will watch them over and over again plus they're on sale to start with. It's amazing how many movies are sold very cheaply. $2.49 a movie isn't bad as long as you only watch one movie. I miss 3 for 3. We had 3 movies for 3 days for $3. Now that was a gooood deal! [writersedge]
I watch movies less the older I get. I fall asleep right in the middle of a good movie or right at the end. We have cable and what is offered is "Charter on Demand" so that's our main source of movies at home. It's not cheap for the cable package but we both think it's worth it. I haven't been to a movie in years so I have no clue what the prices for admission are now. [carolbee]
A year ago, I would have been surprised at anyone falling asleep during a movie. Now, I'm lucky if I stay awake during a TV show. That's why I like video and DVDs, I can watch them when I'm more awake. We had cable, but the wind blew the lines down so often that we went with satelite. Thanks for your response and take care. [writersedge]
i have my own video shop so movie on dvd or vcd format is not a problem, but my problem is the time which i spend every movie...i am very busy all day long so hard to find enough time to watched it...sometimes what i really did is watching movie while i am doing some work online...it's hard to concentrate. [julyteen]
It must be so cool to have your own movie shop. It must really be going well if you're too busy to actually watch any of the movies. Thank you very much and what a cool job! [writersedge]
I do like to go to them. This way the sort of movie I would like to see I can't have spoiled by rude people. [ElicBxn]
Yes, lately more and more people talk during movies when you go out. It makes it really difficult for my husband to hear. Take care [writersedge]
I don't go out to movies much anymore, gas is too high for one thing, plus the cost of a ticket. But there are certain films I really do want to see on a big screen, like today I'm thinking of going to see "10,000 BC," that's definitely something to see on a large screen with big, loud speakers. I don't have cable or dish, just network. So I visit Blockbuster to rent DVDs sometimes. I also buy DVDs once in awhile, if they really impress me, for whatever reason. [Makena1968]
Sounnds like you have a variety of things going on there. Thank you very much for your response and take care. [writersedge]
We don't go to movies when they first come out, we wait until they go to the discount movie theater down the street from the other theater..I believe it is 2.00 per person.. [carmelanirel]
That is sad and another sad thing that is probably a rarity and that is drive in theaters..There are a couple in the area, but they are at least an hours drive away and that is way too late for us, especially if we stick around for the second feature.. [carmelanirel]
Well I have turned to Netflix to help me out. Now that I have it, there are SOME movies that I don't worry about seeing in theaters, i'll wait for them to come to Netflix (there are still some movies I see in theaters-dont wanna wait ;p) But Netflix has a lot of different packages to choose from, to fit your price range. They are actually pretty good deals with the amount of movies you get! I am currently getting 3 movies at a time (unlimited number a month) for $16.99. With this package I also have UNLIMITED time to watch their available movies on my computer But they have deals ranging from 8 at a time (unlimited) for $47.99 (i dont need that many!) to 1 at a time (2 a month limit) for $4.99. But I don't like that one! I might change my plan back to 2 movies at a time (unlimited) for $13.99 when I move =P But there are nine different plans to choose from! [LilyoftheThorns]
No problem! I'm glad I could help bring movie enjoyment to you! lol. Lots of good movies to choose from! And the site usually gets movies right when they are released to dvd! [LilyoftheThorns]
Going to movie theaters is outragously expensive, especially for a family to do together. I don't like buying videos or DVD's because what do you do with it when you have watched it several times? We do the NetFlick thing for $4.99 a month and it works out to about 2 movies a week if we watch it and mail it out right away. This is the best way to go. What else we do it many of us have formed a circle that share our movies. We "trade" them to each other for another movie or DVD, and then when we all have had a chance to see what we want we donate them to the library to use. It has helped build up the movie section at the library and saved the library money so it can buy some of the newer movies that come out on video or DVD. [wrongway]
yeah, the prices of movie tickets are rising nowadays. as for me, i seriously find it a waste of money to spend like almost ten bucks just to watch a 2-hour show. i`d rather rent it outside and bring it home to watch. what`s more, it`s much more comfortable to watch at home. i mean the dvds are released quite fast,so one doesnt get left out even when his/her friends are discussing about a particular movie, right? [serene24]
My husband and I love to watch movies, but, like you said, it is getting to be very expensive. The last time we went to the theater, it cost us almost $50 by the time we got the tickets and a drink, small popcorn, and snack each. Ridiculous! Now what we do is wait for them to come out on dvd at Wal-Mart. About a month or so after they're released, they're about $10, so we just buy them then and can watch them whenever we want. We also browse the $5 bin quite often. It's a lot cheaper to go to Wal-Mart, but a dvd and some snacks and go home and relax to watch a movie. [chellekellam]
Wal-mart does have some really cheap DVDs and CDs. I didn't realize that until my husband's brother came up to visit. He came out of a Walmart store with a bunch of $1 CDs for artists that we like. Take care and thanks for a different response. $50 wow [writersedge]
I think renting is the best deal. The theater is expensive, close to $10 now, though I'm not totally sure since I haven't been to the theater in years. Premium movie channels from cable are expensive, and I don't have time to watch many movies lately. You pay the same price whether you watch all or none, and since I'd watch few if any, not a good deal for me. I'm not sure how much they are, but I think the prices start around $10 a month, and go up from there. You can't choose what movies are on when, so you never know if something you like will be on when you have the time to watch. When you rent, you can choose what movie to watch, and when to watch it. You can pause if you are interrupted. You can rewind if you missed something, or if you want to see it again because it was so hilarious. They are about $3 for one day for a new release, and $1 for an older movie. There are also rent one get one free deals sometimes. New movies come out on DVD so quick now that you don't have to wait very long to see a new movie. Though I rarely have the time to watch a movie, when I do, renting is the best way for me. [Sillychick]
Thanks, I think renting is best, too. You have way better rates prices than we do. Thanks for your response and take care. [writersedge]
We hardly go to movies, unless it is a very good one and usually when it is someone's birthday. I can now get in on seniors, and most of the time, it is the movies my husband likes, the kind where the hero and or heroine are escaping flames coming from either an exploding building or a car, big major type of bad guys intent on destroying democracy or rule the universe or stuff like that. We do get the movie channels and some of the movies are repeats, especially what the country considers the best winners or shows their ideology. I do like women in danger, but even then these get quite boring. When we really like a movie, we will buy it on Dvd either hi definition or regular (have to wait until Christmas for the blu=-ray paper or Playstation 3) I do not like renting movies since we already get the movie stations, and it does seem a waste if the movie is a bomb. But if the movie is good, I would buy it. I am trying to get all my old favorites on dvd. I would like to get one with all the Alfred Hitchcock Movies. [suspenseful]
We don't go to movies very often any more either. My husband has a few more interests than that, luckily. I hope you're able to get your Alfred Hitchcock movies. Take care [writersedge]
i must have to agree with the fact going out to a theatre is expensive,i currently am a mature student who enjoyed nights out at the cinema quite regulary, they charge regardless of a persons status and even more expensive for refreshments, here in england the local cinema charges £6 for adults and f4.50 for children, personally with having sky i would rather pay the extra for movie subscription to have the benefit of numerous movies for the month. [johncampbell5]
Maybe where you live, that isn't bad, but where we live, minimum wage is 7 dollars and 15 cents, but a movie is 8. So more than one hour's worth of work unless go during early matinee hours. But most people are working there. So in your area it probably works, so you can disagree for you, but if you look at all the responses before yours, you will see that people are trying to come up with alternatives and what they've come up with. When you're on Mylot longer, you will notice many differences between my country and yours (as well as one Canadian and I think someone from another country answered too). Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Just check out some of the others. Thanks and take care. [writersedge]
we get the movies bundle on our satillite. It's $20 extra a month but thats pretty much our entertainment. We have 4 kids 5 and under so we don't really get out too much. Occasionally we will rent a new release movie which here in canada costs $5 but during the week its 2 for 1, so that makes it better. [mom4kids]
Thank you very much, glad that works for you, take care. [writersedge]
There's really no good deal when it comes to movies. I wait until a new movie gets played out on the movie channels to go to the movie channels that are free. Plus I work online at a site that gives me 6 movie rentals for 6 months. So I get to look forward to a movie each month. Plus if the premium channels are giving a free weekend, that's a huge bonus. I just fix my dvr to record most of them so I can watch later. [chertsy]
Sounds like a really good bunch of ideas plus your job has a really sweet deal. Thank you very much. [writersedge]
I've been using Redbox, $1/movie/night. :) The lines can be rediculous sometimes but it's worth it..... As long as I remember to take them back on time. [crazed_moma]
The person who starts it there will be rich! It's genius. [crazed_moma]
Hey Writers, WE don't buy that many movies, and when we do they are usually used or they are usually bargain DVDs that we get new at places that buy close outs to many you know the deal... I just got 2 great DVDs today, Iron Eagle and The Second Chance for 3.00 each, and to help with being able to have variety we rent from block buster with about 6-9 movies a month, so it averages out to be better deal for us most of the time. mooch [oneandonemakesix]
Good ideas, thanks. [writersedge]
I don't do either anymore, just don't have the money, I usually just watch the movies as they come on regular tv. [winterose]
That's probably the least expensive way. Thanks. [writersedge]
I just watch them on TV about a year after they are released in the theater. My sister likes to rent movies at Blockbuster. I usually watch movies with my friends, not as much when I'm by myself. [chad252]
Watching with friends is cheaper, thanks. [writersedge]
We only go to the movies once every 3 or 4 months. Too expensive when you are taking two kids with you. We now rent from Redbox. A $1.00 night is not bad plus you can find free rental codes if you google around. I have seen more new release movies in the past six months thanks to them. Our grocery store just got this so we are now averaging about 2 movies a week now! We love it. I really wish Redbox would have been around several years ago, I sure would have saved a lot of money between Barney and Dora DVD's. LOL [kimbers867]
SHH, your secret is safe, only a hundred thousand people or more have the opportunity to read it here. Smile. I don't think we have one locally, but I will check. Thanks again and take care. [writersedge]
I would like to see more. I like to take my kids to the cinema but it's too expensive as you say. We usually wait and find bargains. We'll buy 2nd hand DVDs. I would not pay for a movie channel because I don't think it would be justified as they do repeat the same ones and I would not be interested in most. The prices you mention for cinema seem quite good to me. We pay the equivalent of twice that in some places and there isn't always a discount for kids. We can rent DVDs from the library but sometimes it's cheaper to buy them second hand. [pumpkinjam]
I guess it is all relative. Our cinema costs a bit more than hourly minimum wage too. I don't know how they still get so many people to go! It doesn't make sense to me that companies can charge such high prices for everything when wages are so low! Stil, I guess that would be a whole other discussion! [pumpkinjam]
why do u have to rent em wen u can watch em online in excellent quality for free...i watch most of my movies online or download em from torrentz... [jsharriz]
Well, for one thing, my computer is useless for movies. I get a few frames, then it loads the next frames while I wait, then I watch those frames, someone sent me a video address from UTube to watch. After one minute I got so frustrated, I couldn't take it any more. I can't watch a 15 minute vid, say nothing about a 2 hour movie. But if I could watch a video on my computer, that would be terrific! So thanks for the advice for those who can. But not everyone is that lucky. [writersedge]
I use amazon for rental DVD'S, amazon get you to pay £6 a month and you can hire as many films as you like it just depends on how quick you watch them and send them back. I normally get around 5 films a month for this price and you dont need to pay return fees or anything that is all done for you. All I have to do is log in and chose a list of 20 films and put them in order of the most prefered one and then they send them out. I also rent my childs films through blockbusters as they are offering a dvd for a day at 25p per film, this is great in the holidays for the kids [Shelley121]
That sounds wonderful for where you live, thank you! [writersedge]
It is expensive anymore for someone to go out to the movies. I haven't been to a theater in a very long time. But my friends have talked about how much it is to go. I mentioned to them that there is no way I would pay that kind of money to see a movie. They also mentioned how much the refreshments are if you want to get something to eat or drink. Both are high way robbery as far as I am concerned. I only rent movies once in a while not very often. Most times I watch movies on the television. [sunshinelady]
I feel the same way. It's amazing all the options the Mylot members have come up with. I often just wait for them on regular TV, too. Thanks. [writersedge]
my husband and I use to rent movies every weekend. We use to get coupons alot for hollywood video and go there all the time. Since we had kids we don't go and get them as much. I would rather buy them, or order them off of on demand. We don't do that as much either. A 2 hour movie always turns out to be 4 hours b/c we have to stop it so much to tend to the kids so we don't watch them very often lol. Everything has gone up in price I noticed in just one week. The other day when I went to the store kiwi is .44 cents each when before you could get 3 for $1.00. Its all due to the gas prices going up everything is always connected to gas. [mflower2053]
You are so right. Prices are jumping out of this world and our wages are not. Somethings got to give soon. Thanks and take care. [writersedge]
In my area movie theaters are $11 and up, unless you find a second-run theater (which can be a great deal if you don't care if a movie's been out for a while). I've never rented a video in my life; I get all my movies from the public library. Of course, that is the New York Public Library, which has dozens of branches and zillions of items in its borrowing collection. Is there a nearby library to you where you can get inter-library loans, one that is closer to you than 25 miles away? [Idlewild]
Yes, there is, but she (local librarian) won't get it for me. She got mad because I was late on a book and she's suspended my privs indefinitely. It would have been OK, but she was inputting them into the computer system and I couldn't find that book for love or money. Finally moved my couch to clean and found it. I must have been tired and put it on top, looked like it slid behind, and didn't even remember putting it there. Anyway she went into a tirade in front of patrons and I left. [writersedge]
I mostly rent as movies are $10 regular, $8 Matinee and students and I don't know what kid prices are here. Now one thing I have done to cut down on cost is get a entertainment book for my area which has coupons for discounted movie tickets. I can get in for $6 which is cheaper than matinee for me. I also rent from Netflixs. I pay around $35 dollars for 6 movies at a time for unlimited rentals in a month. That usually keeps us plenty busy. We watch rented TV shows or movies almost every night of the week. I rarely go to the movie theater, maybe once a month when one of my friends wants to go. [Aurone]
You have a good variety of ways to get what you want for movies. Many terrific ideas. Thanks. [writersedge]
i don't really watch tv that much so i usually just wait til there is a good movie on tv and watch it or i borrow a movie off of friends or famiy [mouse27]
All good ideas, I've borrowed from friends and family, too, but their tastes in movies and mine differ. Thanks and take care. [writersedge]
I have digital cable and I have many movie channels so I can and usual do see at least one movie a night. It is so worth it.These days are very few new films I want to see in the theater.I don't rent films because between HBO, Showtime,Encore I will get to see the "new films" when they air.The last time I saw a film in the theater it was 7.50.There is a system called Red Box where you can rent a DVD for 1.00 a night. And It all depends on what tier of cable how much it costs. [sarahruthbeth22]
I see Red Box at my supermarket. I am in Virginia and I find them in Giant Food stores. I hope that helps. [sarahruthbeth22]
I very rarely go to the cinema, only if it's a film that benefits from a big screen or if I get free tickets, as it's just too expensive. I think it was something like £6 or £7 for an evening screening. As for TV, I don't bother paying extra for film channels or pay to view. In the uk we have a cable channel - Film 4 - that is the film version of a long running terrestrial channel - Channel 4. It shows a lot of cult/non mainstream/british/foreign films, which are the ones I like most. I don't like many of the Hollywood blockbusters [Foxfire1875]
That sounds like a very interesting Channel, wish we got it here, thanks friend. Take care. [writersedge]
Typically we watch movies on TV ... we have pay per view, and our cable package comes with movies on demand, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, and Starz. So we usually get pretty current movies. I really don't know what our cable bill cost is ... but I don't think it is cheap. Cable also gives us all the various channels such as history, westerns, etc. I sometimes forget to watch these movies. It's probably because I am on the internet a lot. The adult ticket price for movies is $9.50 where I live. I am not sure what the matinee or children's prices are. My step-son rents movies at the library ... however I am not too sure how current these are. We really have not rented a movie for a long time. My brother uses net flix and just loves it! [marilynut]
These are all interesting and fun options, thank you very much and take care. [writersedge]
We just use to going out to watch movies every friday and we still keep doing that.We have a DVD player we could of rent but my husband enjoy much eating popcorn and have a drink while watching. We also have this day as our day together because its the end of working and school day. [giePortlandOR_08]
It's my partner's choice. He loves doing it.From working all week he wants to relax watching movie while eating popcorn, lol! [giePortlandOR_08]
It cost 10 dollars to see a movie in the city. I haven't been to the movie theatre since the devil wears prada was released. I now want to watch how I spend my money and rent movies from the library. [mishastar]
Yes, the library is a terrific idea. Take care [writersedge]
In India too watching movie with your family makes the whole budget of the house go haywire. We have seen rise in prices amounting to almost 400% in last few years. A movie Sunday means 1000 Rs gone straight away from the pocket. I usually rent a movie and watch it on dvd then going to the theater as Indian movies have lots of songs so I usually skip those at home and just see the movie without songs. [mansha]
You have to see an Indian movie to understand the difference between your musical ones and ours. Most of them do not have good songs, I will recommend you to watch 'Lagaan', "Dil Waale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', 'Taare Zameen Par', ' Chak De' , These are good latest movies and have good songs too and As far as I know They are availbale in other countries in DVD's. [mansha]
i love watch movies too.. i watch them on cables, on sunday nights at a local channel, i rent and my brother sometimes lend me some of his movies. he's got quite a lot of them too. :) [chiyosan]
So you have about three ways to get to watch movies, that's good. Thanks and take care. [writersedge]
I agree with you, that movies have gotten way too expensive to see in the theatres, and to rent. I just wait until the good ones come on TV, and watch them then. Who cares about advertizements? Atleast the show is FREE. Occasionally I'll rent a DVD, but not very often. [danishcanadian]
True So how are things going in Canada? I like Danish pasteries, but that's as close to knowing anything about anything or anyone Danish as I get. I'd like to know more about your culture. Thanks for your response and take care. [writersedge]
vongo. if you dont know what vongo is then listen up. for 10 bucks a month, you can watch over 1000's movies. i just join them and have been glue to my computer watching movies. they have old school as well as new movies. it is perfect. they are hooked up with the starz channel so you can watch movies from them and they have paid per view movies which cost 4 dollars. so you can download a movie and start watching it a minute later. it saved me on going out to the movies and paying for the expensive cable that really doesnt give you what you want to watch. vongo is a great solution for all your movie needs. [pukaprat]
Thank you very much, I didn't know anything about Vongo. Take care [writersedge]
