If You Took Out The Sound Effects.. Would Horror Movies Be Just As Scary

i have found that some horror movies arent really that scary but like the sound effect make you jump.. like some one will turn around and then you will see a ghost behind them.. the ghost isnt scary but the BANG or whatever noise that sounds right when they show it will make you jump! if you took out the loud shocking noises they use when things jump out at you in the movie would it be as scary?

[question posted by moonlitmagikchild]

responses and comments:

Nope, those loud sounds still make me jump even if i've seen the movie a hundred times..but how many friday the 13th movies can they make more of? [Rosekitty]
i have no idea.. but i guess i will wait till i see the newest one before i comment on if they should stop or not lol [moonlitmagikchild]

I believe that if it was't for the music moves would be very boring. Music is what sets the mood for the movies. The music and make you ant to cry or laugh It's not all visual. And yes it can make the movie scary too. I have seen movies that the music can scar you to the point of jumping when some unexpected happens. Even when it is a small thing such as a hand appearing around the corner suddenly. [deebomb]
yep im watching a movie right now that is quite boring but its got the sound effects timing just perfect to where i have jumped a few times [moonlitmagikchild]

No I don't think so, I think that the movie industry have gotten their studies and I'm sure that their results have proven that it takes effects on all of the senses that is possible as of right now to truly set a movie viewer into the atmosphere of the movie or storyline that they are trying to portray. The sounds and things like that on scary movies definitely add to the movies effect and helps to put you into the setting of what that movie wants you too be. [jambi462]
yeah.. makes you wonder how people watched silent movies.. i guess they didnt know any better [moonlitmagikchild]

Sound Designers have to be brilliant to bring the image to life. Movies are definitely not the same without great sound and great music to go with it. [ROYALG333]
yeah they are amazing with the timing and everything [moonlitmagikchild]

The old silent ones did the trick. They were creepy. I think now days it would be alittle difficult to figure out who was who. And some people are even curious as to the names of the demon. [celticeagle]
yeah those ones with the exorcisms all naming off a half a dozen demons names.. like it really matters.. lol [moonlitmagikchild]

Sure they would!!! That's like saying a stephen king book isn't scary. There are no sound effects in a book. If you ask me, all sound effects prove to do is make the program in question really really annoying!!! My husband loves the sci-fi network. I hate it. I have really sensitive hearing, and the sound effects just irritate the crap out of me. [danishcanadian]
yeah if its something on in the back ground or that im not watching it drives me crazy since i get migraines so easy from sound affects or certain sounds [moonlitmagikchild]

No, absolutely not. The sound effects are inportant, but even more so is the background music that builds all the anticipation. I mean you usually don't even see the bad guy until the ax(or whatever slicing/dicing tool they're using) is falling on the poor stupid victim. The music primes you and works you up so that you know something is going to happen just not exactly when...and the pow, there it is. It's a part of human nature to use your other senses when one is deprived. In horror movies this is exploited by using eerie music for when we can't see anything. [uicbear]
sometimes they take so long to get to the killers appearance i think the music is about to drive me crazy! lol [moonlitmagikchild]

I think some would still be and others will not be as scary as with a sound. There are also scenes that make use of the sound effects to do the scaring so without the "blags", "bangs" and the "screechesss....." they would turn out boring and funny. I think I will try to watch a horror movie without the sounds to see if what I just said is true. lol. [eichs1]
yeah the last one i watched was mostly only sound affects and no action!! [moonlitmagikchild]

Nope...sound plays the key role in horror movies...so, i hope all the credit must go to the sound engineers working in a horror film than the director...in one of your previous post's i had said that i am afradi to watch horror movies, but this is a good idea i have found this topic of your's that i could try watching them without the sound effects, i know it would be boring, but let me start with this..lol [sharay]
yeah it would be a start! put it on closed captioning so you can still know whats being said and going on [moonlitmagikchild]

Personally i feel that any scary or horror movies couldnt be complete without gread sound effects, or visual effects.. Without the great background scary music, and the sudden loud thump, but with even the most excellent visual effect, its just arent the same, and vice versa.. I have been so boring one day that i really mute and scary movie and watch it.. results.. => i wasnt scared a single bit... I tried closing my eyes, and just listen to the same.. i got the same result.. [allentcl82]
guess they need to go hand in hand for success [moonlitmagikchild]

The sound effects in movies definitely add to the overall atmosphere of the movie. This is really weird because I was just thinking about this yesterday. 'Blazing Saddles' by Mel Brooks was on and I noticed that there wasn't a lot of music in it. I was trying to mentally add music to see if it would add to the movie's character. It might have, but I think it was just fine the way it was. However, when it comes to horror movies, music most definitely adds to the spookiness, the overall chilling or frightening character of the movie. Actually, without music, it would just be real life, right? lol [mentalward]
great minds think alike! i guess we are so used to music we find it bizarre when they leave it out [moonlitmagikchild]

You are right about the music. Actually the BANG or sound is much lounder than the normal background music. That is what shakes us. Its just like when our body shakes when we hear a loud cracker burst all of a sudden. Only a few quality movies would be scary without the music. [VANILLAREY]
its funny because i love horror movies but i dont think i would like only the sound only scary kind.. they are good for a change in pace though [moonlitmagikchild]

Yeah most of the horror movie is based on sound only. Not the single if you remove the sound from any horror movie it won't give you that much effect. So I can say the sound is base of horror movie [human_spider]

if we take out the sound from horror movie theh there will no scaryness remains. [deepakraj83]

droolWhat a great discussion..... OK, do you watch the old movies? You know like black and white? Not The Blob and other cheese ones that are fun but not so scary, but like the old Dracula. The way shadows and music were used is what made them scary. It is so cool to go back and see that stuff. I love it. A shadow creeps along the wall and the woman opens her mouth in a scream. The music builds as you scoot to the edge of your chair. Suddenly the bad guy grabs the woman and the scream dies. Music soars, shadow shows you whats going on. Very Cool! Of course I clap and freak out all the scaredy cats but that's because it's really cool. You don't get that kind of cool anymore. Yes, today's movies are cool too... just different. They balance more with technology then sound and shadow. Yes, music is important no matter what type of film it is, but it is more hidden now then it was before. With out it the movies wouldn't be the same. [TLChimes]
its been forever since i have watched those!! [moonlitmagikchild]

yes my friend hope i will be more scary and also i will be just sit to my dad and enjoy it since my dad is there to help me out happy loting [prasanna1990]

haha.. i agree. no way!!! not at all scary!! the movie(if you call it that even without the sound) would just be irrelevant at all.. woudn't even make you laugh.. see, horror films, especially those full of mysteries that only unveil their mysteries at the end of the film, don't even have concrete unveiling of mysteries.. man, if i am going to watch such horror films without a sound, i would feel like i would just be wasting my time.. not scary at all..wouldn't even make sense! lol [darianne]
i wouldnt even bother trying to watch one with out sound.. its annoying when i have to have the sound low because im afraid of waking up hubby and it takes a lot away from the movie [moonlitmagikchild]

No - definitely not - I always either think of Jaws or Alien. If those didn't have the soundtracks that they did - they wouldn't be nearly as frightening. The music intensifies what you are feeling and lets you know that something will be happening soon. Then when something happens you jump for the ceiling! [deejean06]
yep the anticipation it builds is great! [moonlitmagikchild]

i like horror movies very much,. without sounds there would be less "horror" effect. the sounds should always be as good as horror scenes [user_786]
yeah you need a good mix of both for a good movie [moonlitmagikchild]

the movie would not be as scary if there is no sound effects, may be at that point of time when watching a movie it is not going to scare but after a while when i am free and if i think and recall about the movie i think that it would scare me. yes you are right, if the ghost is not that scary also the sound effects will surely scare us and i think it acts as a life in a movie orelse it is just a body. [icegermany]

wakkk...horror movies are made scary only by those sound effects..the only reaso which horror movies attracts audience is the spl effects and the sound effect...if they are absent ....????? [ddfreedie]

I think it would still be scary but I think it would be rather boring too and would lose alot of it's impact. Afterall, there's nothing shocking about seeing someone walk up a flight of stairs in the dark, however the howling wind, creaking steps and moaning you could hear would certainly add to it. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS** [twoey68]
yep sometimes the sound affects are better than the visual once it actually shows it lol [moonlitmagikchild]

Oh no! I need those sounds so I can figure out what body part is getting crushed or snapped while I close my eyes! I also think that the music in the background leading up to the loud noise builds the excitement even further. It would be pretty bland without the sound effects. [di1159]
although there are a few horror movies from the 70s that i wished hadnt had either! because they would bash some ones head in and it would be like a cartoon honking noise or something and then like funky redneck music [moonlitmagikchild]

if a horror movie were without the sound effect, it would still be horrible but less effective. But for some people who are very imaginary and attentative when watching it, he can use his imagination, then , in this case, i guess it would be more horrible than before. [tudors]
yeah some people could probably do better than the movies [moonlitmagikchild]

hi friends...i don't think the movie would be scary if there are no sound effects....because they are very essential to make the movie interesting....so sound effects are very essential in a scary movie to be scary....happy myLotting!!! [vk3110]

yes they would still be scary, like the movies from back in the day. Black and whites were scary and they had no sound f/x just music in certain scenes. [Musher3030]

I don't think it would be as scary anymore if you remove the sounds. The sounds most often give you more sensation to the things you see. I once saw a movie with eerie sounds and got out of the moviehouse. [hibiscus_mel]
i forgot what movie it was but i watched one that its sound affects and music really got to me and the movie wasnt that great! but those affects gave me the chills through out the whole thing.. [moonlitmagikchild]

I would say "yes," but that's just because I KNOW what sounds would be made when I'm watching the sequence-of-events of a horror film. So "no," because what makes ANY type of movie any-good is in the total-immersion in the story---made possible by involving at least two of your senses. It's like listening to "The Shadow" radio-episodes after having seen The Shadow featuring extra-terrestrial Alec Baldwin. [mythman]

If you took out the sound effects the horror movies woudn't be as scary. Without the sound you wouldn't be able to hear the cat make that horrible cat meow sound. I have seen movies to where that happens and it scares me to death. No cat will even be there just that sound and I jump. Have a wonderful day!!! [patriciaqualls]
i have heard those sounds out of my cats and it scares me too lol.. [moonlitmagikchild]

No, especially if they took out the music too, that music leads up to that scary part a lot of times. It is surprising how much is involved in making a good movie. [goofygrmp]
guess you never know and realize all the little things unless you try to make a movie yourself [moonlitmagikchild]

The sound effects definetely make the movie. There are several movies out there that are not scary without the music and effects. Heck, there are other genres of movies that I've watched before and jumped at the sound of a gun fire or some other type of loud noise.happy [Amber4106]

no I don't think so, the sound effects make it more scary for us, we are used to it, but then they had scary movies when there was no talking movies, but then that was all the were used to so they were scared. [winterose]
we're spoiled now.. i wonder what the future will bring? [moonlitmagikchild]

I agree with you totally. The music in horror movies is what makes you realise a scary moment is about to happen. As soon as you hear a certain type of music, you know something eerie or terrifying is coming. As a kid, when watching the late night, cheesy horror movies like "Creature from the Black Lagoon" or "The Blob", I used to turn the sound down and think they were quite funny with all those choreographed monsters. In other movies, it it the sounds of thunder, bats or screams that try to conjure a spooky atmosphere. [Piscesmoon]

I've sit through a horror movie with most of the time covering my eyes and I still had nightmares because of the sounds. I do think the sounds have a lot to do with the scariness! [Lore2009]
I guess so! Sometimes or a lot of the times, less is more. [Lore2009]

Hmmm i guess yes, because there are ASIAN HORROR MOVIES that are scary with less sound effects! [jazel_juan]
thats true.. i guess it makes a difference in what your used to too.. if your used to the sound affects you will miss them but if your not then it wouldnt be that big of a deal [moonlitmagikchild]

Sound or no sound, I think that the movie The Strangers would be just as scary. There is so much gore in the movie and just the knowledge that it is baed on actual events is enough to scare anyone. [lynnemg]
that one was really good with the whole making you jump at the bumps and other noises [moonlitmagikchild]

Without sound, scary movies, aren't so scary after all. Though I used to like them at one time, I seem to have lost my taste for them. I now prefer romantic comedies. I prefer a movie where in the end everyone is happy rather than dead. [1hopefulman]
funny my taste went opposite.. from romance/comedy to horror.. but now i am liking comedies more.. when i can find one worth watching [moonlitmagikchild]

i dont think a horror movie needs sound effects, if its a good movie it shouldnt have them at all, in real life you dont have a sound effect to make things scary, it should be tension and fear of the unknown not jumping because you didnt expect a bang to happen [jonny3hats]
what would be a good example of that? it would be cool to see if i like that type of horror movie.. i just cant think of any that i have seen that wasnt drowned in sound [moonlitmagikchild]

very true it is mainly the sound effects that make a movie scary. esp a horror movie. well some movies might have horror scenes also. so without sound effects also they can b little scary. but major part i wud say is only in the sound effects that can be done that can change the whole scene. [buzzmehere]

Hi moonlitmagikchild I am sure the horror movies won't be scary without the sound effects. It is only the music that takes us with the movie so we feel scared when there is such scenes. I suppose, with out music if you see,a horror movie it may become a comedy movie like. I have not watched any movie with out a background music. So it is only my assumption. Happy mylotting [muru1950]
yeah with as cheap as some of them are done and fake looking with out the sound affects it could look like a comedy lol [moonlitmagikchild]

I guess most scary movies will no longer be scary if the sounds are taken out. It is the combination of what you see, what you hear and what you feel from the background music that builds up that tense atmosphere to make you jump at the scary scenes. So far, all the scary movies I have seen always makes clever use of sounds to enhance the scare factor in the scenes where the ghost or the ghouls come out. And I feel, it is THE only way they can make you feel scared or jump at the scary parts. happy [ahgong]

if we watch movie we always use and big speaker to make the movie more exciting.horror or not we always do.but horror with sounds not nice its not horror anymore.sounds makes the movie amaz and exciting!remember the movie " wrong turn"? it was not realy scary but the sound of it make me scream and shakinglolwinkrolleyes [bombshell]
that was a good movie!! i cant wait to see the sequel!! [moonlitmagikchild]

im sure it would still be scary as long as its a well made horror film.just like they have done in the original exorcist with linda blair.it was on my mind for quite sometime in the part that she had her head turning around...it was really a scary movie for me even if without a sound effect it would be scary as well. [johndur]
yeah you're right about that....i hope they can make more horror movies of that caliber... [johndur]
