......sneaking food in a movie theater? This discussion was inspired by another one when a mylotter was discussing a movie she recently saw.
I have to admit I haven't been to see a movie in a movie theater in ages. Number one, the movies shown at my one and only movie theater aren't you're usual prime, great ones. Since the movie theater seems to cater to the "mentality" of the majority of the folks near me, usually the only movies they show are the gory, slasher types--okay maybe that sounds rather smug of me, but forget about expecting even the big blockbusters to be shown at my local theater, so also forget anything with a touch of "class" as well.
Anyway though, when I did go to the movies, I always took my own bagful of goodies to eat. Since I have low blood sugar, buying candies is a no-no. Nix the popcorn too, since even the smallest container is just too darn expensive. Nix sodas since I don't drink them...and nix the hot dogs they sell as they sit in that rotisserie type thing all day/night long that just didn't look all that appealing to me--so I would take with me some kind of sandwich, maybe some sliced up fruit and a bottle of water. Now...according to the "rules" of movie theaters, one can't bring food in with them, but heck did that stop me? And no, I never got caught.rasp
So fess up folks, when you do go to the movie theater, do you sneak in your own goodies to eat? If you do, what do you take? If not, what do you buy there for the munchies crunchies urge?

responses and comments:
In highschool my friends and I would always sneak snacks into the movies. Nothing big just stuff like gummybears and chocolate hidden in a purse or pants pocket, but we would buy soda at the theater. [gelibean]
I think one of the reasons I always snuck food with me since everything was rather expensive [pyewacket]
Yep.. I sneaked M&M's into a movie theater... I wanted to bring a coke with me when I went to see the new Star trek movie.. but didn't dare..hehe. Fixing to go to bed now... I'm beat. [OreoCookie3]
I could never drink sodas due to blood sugar problem, and they did have small bottles of water on sale...but $2.00??? Sheesh [pyewacket]
Oh yeh, the good old days, haha! I use to bring in a small bag of chips, pretzels, a box of chocolate covered raisins and sat there munching. If I had the extra money though I would buy the popcorn, mmmmmm, so good with lots of butter! [Kashmeresmycat]
Even though I wouldn't have minded buying popcorn it was too darn expensive, even the smallest size..nothing beats movie popcorn though for some reason [pyewacket]
Yep, I'm totally guilty of sneaking food and drinks into the theater. I also will take along a small project like knitting because I have to have my hands busy. I am not a big fan of sodas (man talk about horrible gas! If I drink soda my sheets and blankets float all night long! lol And them toots aren't that great smelling either!!!) I hate the prices they have on the candy and pop corn; besides the fact that I can't afford the price of candy and pop corn on top of the cost of the movie. So, I have a big hand bag that I carry just for the movies. They can't legally search it so I can fit all my goodies in it, including a salad! No, I don't think small. Keep in mind that they can't search your purse without just cause...which would amount to if you robbed the place or smashed the candy counter and grabbed it all while the counter person's back was turned or you cleaned the bathrooms out of toilet paper and paper towels.wink [Loverbear]
I tip my hat to your Multitasking skills, being able to knit in the dark of a Cinema...ninjaand I suppose you nibbling on a salad is better than someone munching a big rustly bag of loud, crunchy potato chipsw00t [ShepherdSpy]
I brought in healthier drinks, lower calorie fruit drinks, for example. My justification is that if they do not offer it, I have the right to supply it myself. And I don't give a * what their policy is. If they want me to buy things, then offer the things I want. QUALITY dark chocolate, for example, not something from Hershey's or Nestle's. Offer it in lower quantities, not a 20 lb bar like at Costco. [Qaeyious]
Uhhh, Shepard, when we go to the movies can I sit by you??? I'll bring the hot cocoa and whipped cream! drool Or the chocolate shakes with whipped cream and a cherry on top!drool [Loverbear]
guilty here... in my defense it would always be tempting to eat especially if its a long movie [blisfully_undecide]
I'm always hungry anyway...LOL [pyewacket]
The security could not even control me to to sneak some snacks every time I go to theater. It's quite expensive to buy snacks inside the theater counters as the price doubles and likely I sneak crunchy snacks such as potato chips, corn chips, nuts and candies. Then, luckily the guards are not so strict I could bring with me can soda and hamburgers. I bought it cheaper outside the theater mostly from the grocery section of the shopping mall where it is also the venue of the theater. But, their instances when I already bought some snacks when I was caught by the guards . Even the candies I put it in my pockets they won't allow and they get to touch my bag and my clothes. Their is really no chance I could sneak snacks..and I have to eat all my stuffs outside the amusement parks, because it is forbidden to bring inside.sad [neelianoscet]
Wow--can't believe their are actual security guards that search people for smuggling snacks...I agree the prices of the stuff they sell at movies is very expensive...one of the reasons I do sneak food in [pyewacket]
When I went to the movies more often than I do now, I had a wonderful ginormous purse that was absolutely fantastic...and yes, I admit with great glee that I would deprive the overpriced rotters of many a buck from overheated candy. A friend and I once sneaked an entire Taco Bell dinner into the theater to eat! Good Times! Jackets, purses, pants are all great for smuggling kit. [CraftyCorner]
I never go into a movie house without food. I get hungry easily and I hate starving myself so I have these little snacks with me whenever I'm watching a movie. My favorite cinema food's Nachos.Ü [russso]
happy Watching a movie isn't complete without food. [russso]
I hadn't been in a theater for at least 20 years.. Rex &I recently started going to th ONLY theater they have here, one of those real old FOX Theater's, with the plush velvet seats{at one time anyway}, the huge vlve draperies, the old fashioned sconces on the inside of the theater.. This place is a good 50+ years old! It is of an era that they NOlonger exist except in very small back hills towns.. We are verylucky to still have it standng, as they tearthese OLD ones down & build newfangeled theater's.. Yes we sneak in food also. We usually take a sandwich, chip, popcorn, ice tea, & cookies... It is just too expensive to buy munchies there.. It's only $5.00 each for us to watch a movie.. Of course they do NOT hv anything NEW or RECENT, but that is ok with us,considring it only costs us $10.00 to go for a movie..Great topic for a discussion...Lori [dumblnddzzy]
The last movie I went too was the first Chronicles of Narnia movie back in December of 2006---those old movie theaters like you described are something else aren't they? Almost sounds a bit like mine but they ruined it when they decided to make it a triplex movie. Where the "balcony" area was made into two separate theatres, completely lost the old feel of the place. Yeesh a movie theatre ticket is $8.00--so no wonder I don't go often to a movie theater [pyewacket]
HAHAH!! omg i love it! I must say for me theer Popcorn is a must..there is noo other brands or ways to make popcorn like the theaters do lol,but i also take in some Skittles,or a dark milky way for me and my son..i love dark chocolate..I wil say Gertrude hawk is the worst chocolate i have ever ate so i dont recommend it to anyone lol..Whitmens is the best that they have around where i live and my favorite..i have also taken in bottle of soda or juice for my son, heck i have even brought in pudding for us and had a grocery bag ready for the garbage lol lol..WE ARE SOOOO BADDD!! HAHAHAHAH!! take care! April [cloud_kicker_32]
It's funny in reading the responses how many "guilty" people there are here who have snuck food into a movie theater. Yes, I would LOVE to buy popcorn at a movie but prices are so outrageous even for the smallest sizethumbdown [pyewacket]
Yes the tickets are expensive plus the food is too. So I would sometimes make my own popcorn and put it in my big bag. Or I stop and the candy store and get twizzlers or some type of chocolate, like M&M's. If the food was not so pricey I would by it at the theatre. After paying so much for the tickets I think the theatre got enought of my money that I don't need to be also buying their food. [lelin1123]
The price of tickets are $10.00 I think before 6pm they are $7.50 or $8.00. With the food and just two people you are looking at $30.00. I rather get my movies from netflix pay 9.61 a month for as many movies I want and eat snacks and be able to pause the movie if I need to. [lelin1123]
LOL my kids father and I would bring our own munchies sometimes and even a bottle of booze then just buy two pops LOL...that was LOOONNNNNGGGG AGO though...Hell I've not even set foot in a movie theater in probably 8 or 9 yrs now if not longer..its just not enjoyable or worth it for me..Id much rather sit in my house in my pjs with my feet up to watch a movie...I can snack on what I want, when I want and pause it if I have to go to the bathroom etc etc.. [Ravenladyj]
The last two movies I saw were way back in 2005 with Chronicles of Narnia being the last one...yup..sitting at home watching a DVD movie is so much better...if you have to go to the bathroom, just press the pause button and you won't miss a thing..LOL [pyewacket]
haha, i think everyone must be guilty of this at least once in their life. recently though, i have been buying the nachos or popcorn and coke from there, but only because i can't get nachos anywhere else. i do sometimes take a bottle of coke with me, but recently i have really planned to go to the movies - it's kind of a right there, right then decision. if i do plan to go, i usually buy some sweet bags or chocolate before i go. once, my boyfriend and i even took a kfc in there. god knows how we didn't get caught - the smell went through the whole room. [xsammiex]
LOL--you probably made everyone hungry for that kfc that day you went to the movieslol [pyewacket]
The only thing that I buy at the movie theaters, occasionally if i am really craving it, is the popcorn, and that is when I go and watch a movie, and then sneak into another one ;). I know its technically all bad, i do bring my own drinks and candy in too, but I think its bad for them to charge me $10 to go and see a movie, thats more that an hours worth of minimum wage, that is just too expensive and it has gotten out of hand, i understand that movies cost more to make now, but the salaries that they give the celebrities are crazy. Many people complain about what politicians buy, hell I complain about what the crummy actresses get to buy after people go and get ripped off to see their movie. So the only way that I don't feel like i am being ripped off is by taking food in or/and sneaking into another movie wink [spicysweetie21]
That's one of the reasons I don't go to movies often..heck the last time was four years ago..tickets are $8.00 near me in my theatersad And don't ask the prices of the food they sell [pyewacket]
Yes, I'm one of the guilty ones. Sometimes it is hard to come up with the money to go see the movie, let alone pay for snacks inside. I don't really need food to watch a movie generally so its no big deal but I do need a drink and bring my own bottle of water. [horsesrule]
Yes the price of movies tickets are outrageous which is why I don't go often..haven't been to a movie in four yearssad' [pyewacket]
Nope, I have never taken food to a theater. My son is working at a cinema and the cinema makes next to nothing from ticket sales. Most of the money to run the theater is made through concession. That is why the prices are so exorbitant. I don't eat hot dogs and wouldn't touch that "buttered" (lol) popcorn if I had to! You can request a small water for free at most cinemas and receive refills. If you order a large water, they charge. They don't actually charge for the food, but they charge for the container. Same with popcorn, they charge for the "bag" and not actually the corn. If the theater didn't have the rule of not bringing your own food, they probably wouldn't be in business for long. [saigonwarrior]
In my movie theater they "sell" bottled water..the smallest size going and it's $2.00..rather bring my own bottle of water. That's precisely though why I do sneak food in though..way too expensivethumbdown [pyewacket]
That's precisely why I like the drive-in. You can bring in a roast chicken and some veggies if you like, and nobody would know. You don't have to worry about the noisy wrappers of contraband food. I love the drive-in! [bonbon664]
Yikes I haven't been in a drive-in movie in decades--they don't even have any near me...My grandmother, mother and I would go to them when we were on vacation though in the Lancaster, PA area but that was something like 40+ years ago [pyewacket]
Hi pye, I have not gone to the movies for many years, the last time I went it was to see "Full Monty" with my friednds but I never took any food with me and I can reember when were allowed to smoke the in theatre, lol! to me the best part was to buy food there, pop corns were my favourute also crips but it was banned because it made too much noise, loved the icecream in those little tubs. BrightBlessings. Tamara [tamarafireheart]
Oh--gosh, I nearly forgot about that, but yes, way, way back many years ago, I do remember being allowed to smoke in theaters...not now of course [pyewacket]
You bet I "sneak" munchies into a theater. Usually a sandwich or sometimes even chips or candy, but rarely anything to drink. It's just too heavy to add to my purse for a 2 hour film. I usually get iced tea or diet soda if they have no tea at the theater. But I haven't been to a movie theater in years. We just wait for the DVD to be released and watch it at home. There is a new one out now that I am considering going out for because it will be months before the DVD releases and I really want to see the film. I was shocked to see the prices for a matinee nowdays ($7 plus $2.50 extra if it is 3-D) WOW! Last time I went to a move that was the evening price. May wait for that DVD release after all. [nova1945]
I rent mine from Netflix. It's under $10 a month and I get the latest releases or older ones (my choices) in unlimited quantities as long as it is one at a time. Works well for me, they also have great sales on DVDs as does Amazon but I don't buy them often. I really want to see the latest Final Destination. I know it is very violent, but the special effects are truly awesome. Don't usually go for that stuff but got hooked on this one when the first one came out and now waiting for #4. [nova1945]
Yes, always...lol I always bring my own food into the cinema, although I will usually buy a soda in there, simply because it is so expensive to buy stuff in there compared to bringing it from home. The prices seem to have gone up so much too. As far as I'm concerned they are making their money out of me as I have already paid to see the movie! [EnglishTeaDuck]
The only thing I would consider buying at a movie is maybe their popcorn..for some reason "movie" popcorn has a unique taste all its own [pyewacket]
I don't even try to sneak stuff in. I'm totally brazen about it. Apart from the popcorn, there really isn't anything I want from the concession stand. I like Pepsi and the theatre here sells coke. If they complain, I tell them they can either be satisfied with the ticket and popcorn sale or give me my money back. xoxo Cyne [CynergyDiva]
That's odd that your movie theater only sells Cokeshocked [pyewacket]
I think everyone is guilty of this at one time or another. I do it because I do love movies, but I don't like spending the money on candy and soda. I love those theaters that have Starbucks and pizza and burgers though!! Expensive but appetizing!! [Galolus555]
I guess only the "high" class movie theaters would sell pizzas and real hamburgers...like maybe the theaters in Manhattan NY [pyewacket]
I might get a diet pop there, or a sprite, but generally speaking either I do without, sneak my own in or go to Alamo Draft House and get a nice meal! http://blog.originalalamo.com/village-menu/ - the 3 cheese grilled cheese sandwich is GREAT, but the last few times its been chicken Caesar salad [ElicBxn]
but imagine being able to sit down, in a chair, with a TABLE and enjoying a meal... yes, they charge a bit because every other row is removed to put in the tables, you get "dinner and a movie" what more could you want? They bring beer and wine too. [ElicBxn]
I haven't been to the movies in ages but even when I did go, I didn't want food. Sometimes we'd share a thing of popcorn while waiting for the movie to start, but I never saw the reason for snacking while watching. Sometimes, I'd like a cup of tea, but that wasn't an option then. I remember when watching My Dinner With André I really wanted a glass of wine... whistle Well, they were drinking... [BarBaraPrz]
LOL--I'm ALWAYS hungry that's why I sneak in food when I do go to a movie...last time I did go though was four years ago. Mmmmm...I wonder I saw a movie like Julia & Julie I'd want to snack on some crepes, or a quiche--oh and of course a glass of wine...bon appetit [pyewacket]
I often take a can of soda, and something sweet - a pack of gum. I refuse to the pay the prices of the food in a theater. However, I often can resist a bag of theater popcorn with all that butter....lol [Sweetchariot]
Nope but last time I went to one was back in 97 the popcorn cost more than the ticket for movie only cost a dollar [Lakota12]
yup a dollar that was back in the early 80s and that one movie house had them that way on certain days we went and saw Pet Detective lololol [Lakota12]
It depends on the theater that I go to. If it's the $15/ticket one, then yes, I bring my own snacks, like granola nut clusters. I never bring from home the same things they offer at the concession. If I go to the dollar theater, sometimes I buy their small popcorn. Hot dogs are under $1, and if they don't look dried up sometimes I get one. Our local drive-in shows three first-release movies for $5/person. I usually buy some things from the concession stand (their pizza isn't bad), but bring others from home. They don't have rules not to, and I've seen people bring in coolers full of stuff. [catdla1]
Fifteen dollars for a movie ticket??? Sheesh--and I thought $8.00 like they charge at my theater was too much [pyewacket]
I didn't realise you were not meant to bring your own food. Maybe you are allowed in the UK. But at the rediculous prices they charge at the food counter no wonder people sneak in their own food. I usually just take my own diet soda and sweeties because they are too expensive in the cinema. [goldiegold]
Yes the food they sell at movies is way over-priced.thumbdown [pyewacket]
Not guilty !! After such a thorough check up of the whole body by security male /female guards ,its impossible here to be able to sneak in any snacks in th emovie theatres. So ,I never got a chance to experience the guilt one feels for sneaking food in to movie halls. [chosen9]
Wow--I can't believe they actually have security guards that search people--it's not like one is sneaking illegal drugs or gunsshocked [pyewacket]
Hi Pye, Many many moons ago I took pop in with me. No I seldom get to the movies. Last time we went over to the drive in theater we took food. But not to a regular theater. But I don't buy food there either. [Ruthep]
It's been about four years since I've been to a theater too...tickets are too darn expensive and the food prices are outrageous too [pyewacket]
I sneak food into the movie theatre all the time. I hate getting ripped off by them. [jross19871]
Yeah, the food costs there are too high [pyewacket]
There was a time when I would take my own food into the theater. I would always pack a sandwich for myself and my children. Also, I would bring in our own candy since it was much cheaper. That is now impossible. They now check any bag (purse or diaper bag, etc) that comes through the doors. So I usually just leave my purse in the car because I don't like the idea of a stranger invading my privacy. But I do belong to the "points club". I have a card that I present when I buy tickets or concessions, and I get points based on the dollar amount that I spend. When the points accumualte (and they do quickly), then I can get free popcorn, free sodas, or even free movie tickets. It helps out. [rmorefield]
Wow they actually search? I haven't been to my movie theater in about four years, but wonder if they search now toothumbdown [pyewacket]
Yeah but then people wouldn't have to do that if they lowered their outrageous prices. They should allow the option of outside food. I know they don't because they want to make money but maybe they can find some other way of doing it. [cupkitties]
You're right the prices of the food one can buy at movies is way overpricedthumbdown [pyewacket]
I'm guilty of this. I used to love to take in eggrolls with me, and a 22 oz of pop. I didn't think anything of it, I didn't care to buy my food there cuz I thought consessions' prices were too high. One time I took in my eggrolls and fell asleep to wake up to sweet and sour sauce spilled all over the front of my pants. Had to walk out of the theater with my pants like that! The looks I got from everyone in the lobby I tried to ignore. [oldmanhorrorfan]
You're right, I never did take'em again. LOL [oldmanhorrorfan]
Many times i make mistake to my friends, to my parent and familiy. But after make a mistake i always try to apologize to them. Event the mistake is not intentional. But sometime they angry to me. They said that i have just make a mistake. But in my opinion the mistake is not appear form me. It's just misscomunication or missunderstand. [jokoutomo]
Jokoutomo, are you saying that bringing your own food to the theatre was a misunderstanding? xoxo Cyne [CynergyDiva]
We always sneaked food in when the kids were little so I am totally guilty as charged! The movie theatre was next to a shopping complex so we would buy sweets, drinks and even bags of (sealed) popcorn as those were a lot nicer than the theatre's ones. Everything is so expensive so I think that encourages people to bring their own, if they made it cheaper we wouldn't buy elsewhere. And no, we never got caught either. Thinking about it now, all the times we have done it, and all the people I know that have done it, I don't actually know of anyone who has been caught. [sunnysmiles]
Well I guess I am not guilty of this one, because I haven't been to the movies in years, and I don't own a TV either, so I feel guilt free on this one, I can't even tell you what is playing at the movies, this weekend, movies don't intrest me any more like thay use to.happy [notlistening2]
I have done it before, not recently though. When I was a teenager we used to sneak all kinds of stuff into the movie theater lol We really don't go to the movie often now, when we do its usually right after lunch so we aren't interested in snacks. [sedel1027]
I haven't been to the movies in a long time, I've never snuck any food in. I usually try to eat before I go so that way I won't be hungry. I will buy a soda and if my nephews with me I'll have to buy popcorn, because thats all they want, I don't mind, its a treat for them to be able to go. [walijo2008]
Hi. Its been a long time sine I have been to a movie also but i did sneak in a can of diet pepsi and took some pretzels in a zip lock bag. Thank godness for larger purses but I need to make sure its not too big or else they would search it. I do not think i look like a terrorist but I guess they feel differently. [muscles4me]
I do it all the time. The only thing I buy from the concession stand is popcorn. [deathspectacular]
I certainly have snuck food into the theater, but its usually just a candy bar for me. I refuse to pay the outrageous price for candy there. I usually buy a small soda and occasionally when I feel like treating myself I will purchase a small popcorn. I have never brought my own drink to the movie theater. Sometimes I won't buy anything, especially if the movie is short. [Aurone]
Hey pye! I haven't been to the movies in a few years! But, when I did go my girlfriend and I stopped off at the dollar store to get our munchies first since it was just about two blocks away! I'm not a big muncher when I'm watching a movie, but I like to make sure that I do have something just in case! I don't remember exactly what I bought, but knowing me it was some kind of candy and probably pretzels and a bottle of diet pepsi! I do like the buttered popcorn they sell, but it's way too expensive! The tickets alone are outrageous! We went to a matinee and got in for "seniors" even though we aren't yet seniors! Who cares they let us get the tickets! [Opal26]
Well, I don't go to the movies all that often any more. When I go on a date, I always sneak in candy, chocolate or sweet and sour or something like that. I have to remember to use my big purse for going to the movies. When I take my daughter, I SHOULD bring something with me but the last time I forgot. I have on occasion brought a bottle of water and a can or two of soda - again in the purse. I usually buy popcorn and soda though because like I said, i don't go very often any more. I don't think I have ever bought a hot dog but I do like popcorn and soda. Movie popcorn is so awful as far as fat and calories, but for the most part, I haven't eaten ANYTHING before I go to the movies, just because I love the popcorn. I won't buy candy there because to me it's way too expensive, and it's so easy to sneak your own in. I can even go to the 99 cent store before to get candy. The popcorn is definitely more expensive than buying microwave popcorn to eat at home, but it still only costs me $10 for popcorn and a soda, which when shared with another person is only $5 each. That isn't too bad, honestly. It's cheaper than the tickets to get in, even for a matinee except at the dollar theater. I think my dollar theater is $1 for the first show of the day, after that it's like $3. At the regular one, it's $6.50 for the matinee and $9.50 for the evening shows. [mommyboo]
BTW, they really don't pay attention when you go into the movies. I was just there the other day and I was waiting for my friend with my daughter and I saw two teenagers walk up and the guy stuffed a bag of soft pretzels up his SHIRT and put the soda behind his back while his girlfriend handed the tickets to the usher. The usher didn't even SEE the guy, he was just watching the girl. It was hilarious. I imagine you could get in there with a bag full of mcdonalds food just as easily. [mommyboo]
I brought this discussion awhile ago. Yes I do bring goodies to the movies. It saves me a bunch of money and everyone can bring what they want. [Shar19]
I haven't been in the past years, but it used to be so confounded expensive just to get in, that I didn't have enough money to buy any snacks cause the snacks were so confounded expensive!!! i understand the that is part of their income...profit... they have a captive audience so they can charge whatever they want so most will just pay anyway, but when it was like $50 just to take my 2 kids to a movie for 2 hours... I just couldn't afford it.... and that was only for drinks and popcorn. I dont' know why they have to make that stuff so expensive. Heck, if you can buy it at the Dollar Stores for a buck... why can't they just buy it from there and charge 2 bucks or something like that. But why bother... people buy anyway. [coffeebreak]
I do but I like popcorn but I like microwave low-fat healthy stuff not the cardiologist delight that is served in the theaters. If they gave me healthy options I would buy their food but they would rather sell junk food. And those hot dogs you mentioned...they are truly disgusting. I have cut down to nothing on carbonated beverages since they cause me to retain water. I am on weight watchers and don't do candy or at least not the garbage stuff they sell there. AND the popcorn is unhealthy and taste nasty....it just smells good. Besides, we only get to the movies about once or twice a year. [Debs_place]
I used to do that, pye.. but in later years, I've come to enjoy the taste of the popcorn. Love the sweet taste and I also love to buy cup corns. Mix it up with a soda drink; I get all these tastes combined. I used to sneak in burgers and fries; ha.. those were the days. Sometimes with exes too, and we would eat like nobody's business.. [zed_k4]
I usually eat before or after the movie, the prices of snacks and drinks there is insane. I'll also put a bottle of water in my girlfriend's purse. [lhsy2k]
Yes, I am guilty of sneaking in foods to the movie theater too. I just sneak in a small bag of candy like M&M's or sour candy. I have never been caught yet by the usher at the theater. I do this because I think the snacks they sell there are terribly over-priced. [nijolechu]
This really made me laugh, Pye. I go to the movies about once a year - if that - and it's always with my Mum, for a bit of a treat. A few years ago we were going to see one of the Lord of the Rings movies, and decided to take hot chips in with us. We had no idea hot food was banned in our local cinema - but as soon as we sat down, an usher came around and told us we were not permitted to have 'smelly' food in the theatre! It was SO embarrassing - he told us we'd have to hand the food over to him and could pick it up afterwards. Very disappointing - but what can you do? There were only half a dozen other patrons in the place, too. I'm not sure whether there are rules about taking other food in, but we did have chocolates and sweets in our handbags, which we ate durin the movie! [guybrush]
I have what my friends call a movie purse lol. It's a huge purse...we can fit about 3 or 4 water bottles or soda...and then we usually will stop at CVS and pick up candy or some kind of snack...once we decided to sneak starbucks in. We put had one of those caddy things so that the coffee would be sitting up in the bag and we put the candy around the coffees to keep it steady...I don't know how but nothing spilled lol. I think we were lucky but if it had spilled it wasn't a big deal cuz it was an old purse and one of my girlfriends had my wallet lol. [dreamr802]
Yes, I am, and I don't feel guilty! I usually sneak in a bottle of water. Of course I have not been to a movie theater in about a year. [AmbiePam]
hi pye.. there was similar discussion i responded to quite time some back.. and the answer to your question is - YES!.. i am guilty, too... the food / snack sold at the theater are ridiculously expensive, so i normally i would buy the popcorn (because you cant get that anywhere else).. but i try to sneak other things like a bottle of water, a candy bar... sometimes whatever that i fit into my bag..lol you see.. when we take the whole family to watch the movie.. that's seven of us.. i cant buy snack and drinks for each one of them - i'll go bancrupt.. so, we usually catch a movie after a big meal.. so, the children will be full and wont be asking for much more than popcorn and water.. rasp, but even if they do.. i'll just grab one from inside my bag... wink [4mymak]
I do tend to bring snacks to the movies with me as well as a drink. I bring something like corn chips and candy. I like to bring green tea which I put in the freezer to make sure it stays ice cold. I can't afford to pay those high prices that they charge. [irishmist]
sadangrythumbdownhi pyewacket I didnt have any problems in the movies bringing in popcorn and candy, but we went to an angels home game and theystopped us looked in our backpack and confiscated all our goodies.we got them back afterwards but had to buy their hot dogs and their popcorn and soft drinks and spent so much we had to phone my sons friend for a ride home as we didnt ev en have bus fare left.wah wah. [Hatley]
I DID!!! hahaha. I carry one of those big handbags. Usually I become the person who is carrying people's stuff because i have a big bag and the big bag has a lot of space.. and 'how much can one mobile weight?' I guess i don't mind much, except if they keep telling me to take it out, then put it back in. bugs me then. But mostly big bags are good for the figure. So in big bags we bring food, from pepsi bottles to mcdonald sets. we've sneaked in everything. You said it, theater food is made to rip us off. Small containers and high bucks, i can get way better food with that money and enjoy it more. But we still buy small pop corns and sodas sometimes. good topic. [dex1007]
On the rare occasion that I do go see a movie, I sneak in my own food as well. Bottle of juice or water, home-popped popcorn with loads of real butter and salt, and sometimes candy. I never got caught either. [blackbriar]
I can't think of anyone that I know that isn't guilty of this. Now the last few times that I've been to the movie theatre I haven't taken food in with me. Heck, I don't get to go too often and I really want to have some movie theatre popcorn when I am there. But, I do remember not too long ago when a group of people from our playgroup were going to a daytime showing of a children's movie that one of the mother's suggested sneaking in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids to eat because it was close to lunch time. For me though, it's mostly been candy or some crackers or something really simple that I will carry in with me. [dorannmwin]
I have never brought food in to the movie theater with me when I go. I normally do get suckered into buying the popcorn and soda combo for the kids and myself. It is insanely priced, but since I do not carry a purse and my daughter no longer needs a diaper bag it would be hard to sneak something in even if I wanted to. [lilybug]
We would often sneak in extra food. It's cheaper, for one, and for another, they just don't have enough of a selection of little candies - lots of chocolate bars, etc., but not the kind of things we wanted to munch on. We didn't sneak soda or anything they actually sell in, because that we could buy if we really wanted to. [cutepenguin]
Dozing off at the theater and later lying saying that the movie was good. :( Its just that we have a movie theater here that it has the most comfortable seat.. and I go out at times with my parents to watch films. When they pick the film however, its sometimes boring, so I end up dozing off and telling them the movie was great... not very proud of that though :( Also sneaking in ice cream. [indybaty]
lol i'm so guitly i'm not paying $2 for a little bit size candy bar. [persona_touch]
Yes I do! That's because the snack choices from those kiosks outside the theater aren't good, most of the time, plus very expensive. Since I always use large purses, I can store my goodies inside.wink I remember one time, I was so hungry since I haven't had a decent meal yet so I bought a small box of pizza, a burger and soda from McDonald's and brought it in to the theater with me. Great, just great!happy [crazyoverpurple]
So, you have the 'perfect storm' of a reason to sneak in food.As for me, I do not normally snack in the cinema nor drink a cola. To me, a cinema is only for a show and not for snacking. I used to see young girls giggling when they drop popcorn on the floor or spill drinks onto their laps. Then the parents that bring kids into the cinema-they are the grossest. All kinds of food are brought in including KFCs and kebabs. To compound matter, you have additional sound effects from the children's whining and crying. [jonjee0203]
I haven't that i recall, but I have once sneaked a person into a drive-in theater. [dawnald]
Even though I not do eat in the theater, I do sneak in some goodies.... especially if the movie is about 2 hours. The only problem I dislike is that the more conscious I am, the more aware I am of the "sound" generated from opening the goodie bag. Even my attempt to open the goodie bag under my bag, I still feel as if it is creating a thunderous bomb. What a guilty feeling. [whyaskq]
Well, I very seldom go to a theater, but when i have went, they check through your bags for stuff like that. One time , I had just eaten at a restaurant and couldn't finish my meal so I got a doggie bag. Stuck it in my back pack and went to the movies. The lady there checked and told me i couldn't bring it in. So it was either eat it outside and come back in or throw it out. I was too full to eat it (By the way I had already paid for my ticket) So, I just dumped it in the trash. I was riding the bus so no car to put it in. [mssnow]
OH.. nice discussion that you started.. and let me confess too.. and YES, I did sneak in outside food, coz it's cheaper to buy outside than buying from the counter.. however, I will still buy a pop corn since I love them very much.. Beside my confession, I will also want to share one of my very bad experience on people not just sneak in goodies and snack but actual FOOD!! I was watching this movie with a bunch of friends, and when the movie was about to start, come in a couple, and when they seated, guess what is from their pocket, they are having burgers and pasta! surrender OMG, in my heart and to the awful smell of the food, it stink the whole cinema, and everyone was so uncomfortable with it.. we keep munching on gums just to have the smell eliminate from our nose! I just wonder how can people be so inconsiderate in sneaking in food! Also, the worse part is, both of these guys sharing the food with a mouth each!! rolleyes [cwong77]
I am guilty of this...Seriously though they are SO EXPENSIVE when you purchase goodies at a movie theatre. I dont understand why they have to charge so much money. So i am glad that they have the new trend of big handbags. You can fit quite a bit of treats in them. The one thing I love the most is popcorn, and they charge so much for that as well. So I usually opt out. There is no need to spend more money on goodies than it cost to get into the movie. [nrn2003]
I used to always always always bring my own candy in! For 1$ I could get a big box of something that would cost 3-4$ at the movies. What a rip off. I haven't brought drinks in but do know people who have brought bottled water. I think the price of bottled water is a rip off too. Water should be free! The only thing I ever buy there is a slushie if I'm really in the mood for one, and I only get popcorn like once a year when it just smells to good to pass it up :) Usually though, we eat before we go to the movies so we don't even need anything while we are there. [vivasuzi]
i used to buy at the theatre as i was foody . i used to buy popcorn, hotdogs, waffers. smetimes i used to sneak chocolates and jelly with me in my hands but never got caught . [sherkhan691]
I always used to go to the movies during the winter so I could hide a few packs of candy in my coat. Some grocery stores sell the theater-size boxes of candies like Junior Mints, Jujyfruits, etc. for 88 cents to $1.20, or about half the price the theater charges. Depending on my mood, I will either buy popcorn or nachos at the theater. If the theater sells juices, I usually buy them, otherwise I'll have a diet soda. [jtr115]
I have not been to the movie theater in along time either but I used to sneak in food. When I was a kid a small bag of popcorn and M&M candy but I alway brought pop at the theater. When I grewup and went to the theater I would buy the drink and popcorn at the theater but I would still take my candy with me. [happy6162]
We RARELY go to the movie theater due to prices. After having kids it became even more infrequent because of needing the babysitter, or the extra cost as they've gotten older. I did go to a few of the free summer movies for kids and I did take my own food & drinks in. However, the theater didn't seem to really care because most of the groups were school groups and many people had their backpacks and snacks with them. Good thing too because my kids would have been begging me for goodies if I hadn't taken them with me. And even with free movie, I couldn't afford the goodies. [renitaperrone]
No I've never done that. But I'd like to, usually I just take gum with me and eat that. I'm not sure if that counts but that' s what I do. [doglady112]
i just recently moved to denver from a small colorado town and out there the snacks at the movies are pretty cheap...you know about 2 bucks for a large popcorn, and like 1.50 for a large coke. but when i went to the movies out here i ended up paying 20 dollars for a medium popcorn, two candies, and one large coke. I ALMOST HAD A HEART ATTACK!!! so now everytime we go to the theater here we ALWAYS take our own candy and coke....we only buy a 5 dollar medium popcornglare but its still cheaper!! [britt_200]
Hi pyewackethappy I'm not guilty of that! Hehehe.. and I never got caught too! Anyway, the popcorn, fruit juices and other snack's price in the movie just too expensive (even the mineral water cost too much). They can be twice or third times more expensive, so I usually go to the department store or small market first before watch the movie. I watch the movie inside the mall, so that ensures me there are other place that sell snacks. I buy a bottle of mineral water and potato chips, sometimes fruit yogurt, then put it all inside my bag,,then just crunch them with all my friendslol In the past, my friends suggest me to buy instant popcorn instead of movie's popcorn, but it tastes bad, and I love chips more than popcorn. I don't know why, but popcorn that sold in the movie taste better than instant ones,,don't you think so, pyewacket? Honestly, I don't really need munchies crunchies while watching the movie, usually my snacks still full or half empty, so if I'm not in the mood of munching, I even won't buy any snacks [ChrysanTflower]
I am guilty of this. The theater that I frequent is close to a drug store and I usually go there and pick out afew candies or whatever. I have a big purse and carry them in that way. It is sort of exciting and I just go almost late and hurry in to the theater, buy my ticket and scurry to the show. If I buy there I usually get popcorn if my daughter is with me or I just get some Junior Mints and a pop. I don't even do this anymore because I just recently went on a very strict diet. [celticeagle]
I did it one time. I brought my sandwich I had from home to eat. That happened on the day I last worked at CiCi's Pizza in Norfolk, Virginia. That day was April 16, 2009. Now, I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I won't be seeing any movie at the theaters for a while now that I'm back in college. Even now, I would just buy the popcorn and drink at the concession stand for popcorn is my weaknesslol Now if only Tyler Perry would visit Westwood College to find his next set of talent. Perhaps a struggling student who wants to master in web designing and business but is having DIFFICULTY making those late overdue student loan payments to SallieMae? A tall, 6-foot thin African-American male who wears glasses, wears blue and goes by the name that you see on myLot eyeneed30Gs?wink [eyeneed30Gs]
I am guilty with it, although I like popcorn after buying ticket in a movie theatre, I go stop by on a nearest grocery to buy my own food. And yes eventhough management of cinema is strict because they are checking the bags of the people entering the place, my food still escape from their eyes. I always do it. I just cover my food plastic with a towel and there I can let my food enter in the movie houses freely. [grecychunny26]
Guilty as charged, Pye! I haven't been to the theater in years but I always carried a big bag and goodies for me and the kids. Back in the day, a friend and I even snuck beers in. We almost got caught but didn't . Phew! I would never pay the prices they are asking for food and drinks in there. The smell of the popcorn is tempting but I refuse to pay the price. They'd do better I'm sure if they were more reasonable and maybe people wouldn't be so tempted to cheat. happy [sid556]
Hi pyewacket...Only every single time! I have purchased popcorn and an occasional drink - more often than not - just water. However we always have some form of snack that I take in inside my pocketbook. The candy in the theater is always extremely expensive and in the smallest containers possible. It's always cheaper to go to the supermarket and smuggle it in! [deejean06]
I used to work in bookstores and we would sometimes get movie tickets associated with books we were promoting. Usually only the store manager was privileged but I remember this one time when we all got tickets. The cinema was around the corner from work and starting half an hour after closing. We had to rush our end of day chores and get some food and we get to the cinema just as the film is starting with our Macdonalds in hand...."Oh no you don't....no food allowed unless you bought it here". None of us were regular movie goers (obviously)and we were not aware of this rule so we just sat in the foyer and scoffed the lot. We were lucky enough to get more tickets a short time later but this time we stashed our dinner in our hand bags before going in and ate at our leisure while watching the movie...you live and learn...whistle [MsTickle]
oh you bet i'm guilty. i used to get one of those "navy coats" when i was a kid and stuff the pockets. there was no way i'm paying movie house prices.and i'd still do it. ...plus they don't sell fireballs.lol [scarlet_woman]
I have never took food into a movie theater. I think it's mainly because I don't have a big enough purse. Also I hardly ever go to the movies, lol. I do think their snacks should be catered to everyone, not just to people that can eat anything. I have low blood sugar, and candy is a waste of money for me. I do keep cookies around every once in awhile. I think another reason I don't take food with me, is because with 2 kids, there is never any snacks to sneak in, w00t. I normally get a small sodas and two tubs of popcorn. Since when I go, my kids and husband tag along. [chertsy]
Hee hee!! I have! I have! And I will continue to until they decide to come off of their ridiculous high prices!! I'm not paying 4 or 5 dollars for a candy bar when I can get it for much much less at the store! That's plain insane! But people do it all the time and for the life of me, I don't know why. I bring a can of coke inside and ask for a cup of ice. They don't know any better and I'm not telling them either!! lol [CatsandDogs]
Without any guilt, most definitely. It is not only expensive to get into the movies but, it is even more expensive to buy snacks there. Most times, it cost me more for snacks in a movie theater then it does to get in. We have snuck in lunch...Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken or even lunch we have made at home. I will go to the Dollar Store before the movies and we will buy candy and drinks there to bring in. I think in all the years that I have been doing this, I have only gotten caught once but the person let me in after I told him that if their snacks were not so expensive I wouldn't have to bring my own in. [ButterflyBear]
Well, I never did sneak into a movie, but like yourself, I did take my own snacks. But I didn't have a good reason like you do. I just hate paying those awful prices. And long ago, they didn't have the drink selections they do now (various coke and pepsi products instead of one or the other...some smaller theatres still have only one brand offered). So I would sneak in with my diet coke, and snacks I liked in my big old purse. And would bring enough snacks for everyone I came with... and I never got caught either. And opening that can in the quiet dark (have to wait for the light to go down of course) always made me think "this is it" and that I would be caught for sure.. but never happened. The things we do, huh!!?? [quinnkl]
