Tonight I watched (again) a movie called I Robot. Its an interesting movie about robots built to assist man and protect us. However the main computer takes it too far and trys to take over everything.
These days many plants used automated machines. Everyone has computers, faxes, etc. Even medical equipment is now automated or computer run. Just like the old Terminator movies where they took over.
Do you think all of these automated machines or robots are a good idea? Are we really helping ourselves by creating them? Or are we putting our future at risk?

responses and comments:
Of course we are putting our future at risk by creating more and more automated machines and robots.Even if robots do not do harm to us,we,human will destory ourselves one day. [YangJoey]
Sometimes it seems that automation does make us lazy too. Thanks for the reply. [TessWhite]
I think we already have been taking risk by just being on computers. Look at some of the information we put out there. Paying bills on line, IRS, etc. And how scary it would be to go into surgery knowing a computerized machine will be doing the surgery. My daughter just had eye surgery and it was computer done. No thanks. I don't think I will still be on this earth when everything will be done by machinery or total computer. Where will the people be? (My Opinion) [JTerrasi]
I know years ago I did bookeeping. Then it went computerized. Truthfully it seemed like it was much more work to import it all into the various programs than just to do it by hand. LOL Thanks for the reply. [TessWhite]
It's far far far away from us. now we still should creat more and more automachines or artifical intelligences for our better lives. Risk is just a side, i think something will be occured to suspend the world civilization, but as a whole, robot will approach and help human. [Scott_July]
Thanks for your response. :) [TessWhite]
Hi Tess, It is a bit scary I agree but with the fuel crisis they will probably become instinct anyway before they can take over and we will all go back to manual labour systems but we are too reliant on these automated items. I didn't have the internet for six days and it was just so frustrating, but that is like big brother as any one can google what you are up too these days. Ellie :D [ellie333]
So true. Have you ever used Google Earth? You can actually see your home from space and it will give a map to get there. Scary! Thanks for the reply. [TessWhite]
I thought I Robot was a great movie with terrific effects and a good mix of action, drama, and humor. I really don't see anything like the movie happening anytime soon. Of course there are some scary aspects of having everything computerized and automatized but most of those aspects are still because of human misuse etc...humans still do much more harm to each other than machines and computers will ever do to us. [brimia]
True, humans are a scary thing these days. Thanks for replying. :) [TessWhite]
Yes, I saw this movie for the first time Sunday!! It was a great movie.. Will Smith knows just how to make a great movie! Looking at this movie makes me wonder how life will be years from now, I know that it would be very scary, seeing machines moving around.. They are also useful too.happyhappy [cream97]
Thanks for the responses. :) [TessWhite]
I think this orld would b better off with robots-humn beings are lazy and they are never committed to their work-I like the the robotification of our planet! [academic2]
I know I'd be better off if they hadn't created TV. LOL Maybe I'd get more done! Thanks for replying. [TessWhite]
Hell no its not a good idea. Just think about all the stuff we are doing with this. We are making automated military vehicles with their own intelligence. I cant remember what country it was, but they named their military computer system, for running some of their automated vehicles...........skynet. Really now? You named your damn computer system skynet? How stupid are you? Im a huge terminator fan, I love everything about it, but I also see what we are doing. You give computers enough intelligence eventually they will start thinking for themselves. Oh you want me to guard against war? Hmmm the best way to stop war is no more humans, and boom Judgement Day ala Terminator. [darkjedi]
Yeah there is no reason to make them smarter then us at all. [darkjedi]
Hello, TessWhite. I don't think we are putting anything at risk by creating computers and technology! The main reason for us to create machines is because we want faster ways to do the things that we usually would do manually. If we didn't use computers, we wouldn't be half of where we are today. Would you like to walk on your own foot for every trip you go? For example, you'd like to go to Canada. But then you find out that men thought that creating machines were too risky... Therefore, there are no airplanes. They can crash. They can kill you. So, go walking. Perhaps you'll get there! Of course, it is risky, but not that much. And you should enjoy the machinery. Computers are not going to turn against us. Respectfully, Munhozmib. [munhozmib]
Thanks for your input. :) [TessWhite]
Dear friend, I hope that technology has both sides the good and bad sides. It depends how the person uses this technology and if that is reached in good people I hope more better things could be given. More over the scrutinizing agencies or the law protecting agencies too find the technology to catch these culprits or criminals by more advanced technology. Hence I feel that technology should be used more by good intentions which may create more problems and disaster to coming generations.happy [SHAMRACK]
Sure, robotics is a great invention. A robot can only do what you program it to, they won't take over the world. [gitfiddleplayer]
Hmmmm one can never tell. They already have some machines programmed with artificial intelligence. What happens when they start thinking for themselves? Thanks for replying. [TessWhite]
I saw that movie and loved it. I can see some aspects of that movie happening sooner than others. For example, the automated cars. I don't think that is too far off. Probably the biggest danger is our dependency on automation. We will lose survival instincts because of our dependency. We will forget how to grow food, hunt, build, measure, etc. When these things break down, we will sit and wait for them to be fixed instead of doing things manually. I read somewhere that humans used to have greater vision prior to modern civilization and they were just talking about reading. They say that with computers it has gotten much worse. That is a sense or skill that has dulled due to modernization. [cbreeze]
Yes I think we need to remember the basics. There could come a time in the future where we don't have machines to work for us. Thanks for your response. :) [TessWhite]
They are good and bad they help speed up the product so we can get it out there to the consumer but on the other hand that is lost jobs and if they break or go wonky it sets everything back Instead of making everything all technical there should be more of a balance other wise we are setting ourselves up to fall when everything goes down and we have to do it ourselves again and noone remembers. [bellaofchaos]
Thank you for your response. :) [TessWhite]
I saw that movie too and had pretty much the same thoughts. I guess modern progress does have it's own price. We can't really live in the past and expect to enjoy the advantages of modern day life. Years ago, we had a car that suddenly broke down for no reason. This was back during the 1990's. And it was going to cost over $1000 to repair. Turned out that the "computer" in the car that kept it running had broken. Honestly, I had no idea that cars even had on board computers. But apparently they do. They rarely break, but when they do, the car won't run. Of course, this was a Ford, so maybe other cars don't have the computer or computer chip. Can't remember what the guy called it. I'm kind of scared over the possibility of turning too much power over to the machines and becoming dependent. Where can we go from here though? Not safe to live in the past. Not safe to live in the future. So we dwell in the here and now and try to cope. [beautyqueen26]
Yup, we see alike on this I can tell. :) Thanks for your reply. [TessWhite]
I belive that, it will come true in future! May be 1000years later or more! people from 1000years ago never know what is happening now [piecesB]
Thanks for the reply. :) [TessWhite]
whatever is going to happen with the robots in the nearest future is inevitable because man's quest for knowledge and a better technology is insatiable just consider how far he has come off from the stone age... [sammy007]
Thanks for the response. :) [TessWhite]
Well I guess I would outlived that date before I could see a real robot capable of overtaking us humans. although I do not dismiss the possibility of that coming but right now the technology is just not enough for me to compare their abilities to that of us humans yet. Except of course in the movies where everything looks realistic but exaggerated. I do not think that it is not their time yet although they are slowly improving with our help, I really do not see them yet as overtaking us. [rsa101]
I don't imagine it will happen in my lifetime. But who knows. At age 48 I've seen an awful lot happen already. LOL [TessWhite]
I think that it is possible that robots might try to take over us humans because a lot of scientist are actually trying to create a robot that would really act and think like a human. Since it was made to act as a human and us humans really have that tendency to turn away from our creator then it wouldn't be surprising if a robot does the same after all it was made to act like us. [magojordan]
What a scary thought! Thanks for responding. :) [TessWhite]
robots taking over the planet is imposible and fiksi and people is perfect to take over the planet.. [jinak1978]
There are so many movies with variations on that theme. The Matrix, Maximum Overdrive, Runaway along with the two mentioned above are just some that have robots or artificial intelligience running amuk. Sometimes it is kinda spooky how computers can just figure things out and it wouldn't surprise me if something like that could happen. I don't think using robots for everything is that good of an idea. [Ruthep]
There are days when I think my computer is smarter than me. Often it even proves it. LOL Thanks for the reply. :) [TessWhite]
Hi, in Japan there is a shortage of carers to look after old people and they really are looking to robots to help care for the aging population. Sounds very like I Robot, does it not? [umart13]
I think, future would be somewhat similar to the present only things that today's heroes and villains shall be replaced by robots. Today,we are having good humans, which are the police, the army etc. and bad humans like criminals, terrorists etc. Tomorrow, we would be having robotic armies and robotic terrorists. But yes, this could be worse for us humans as these robots may destroy us or our planet during their wars. [suruchi86]
Hi TessWhite-I know that by the end of 2009 robots will be in use in hospitals after receiving an email from Marleysa-you should read her discussion-personally I feel that in the future when they are in use there is a verey very big possibility that robots could create a mind of their own and perhaps 'take over' to an extent-whatever I do beleive that the use of robots wether it is for the good they could still be dangerous-blessings littleowl [littleowl]
i think robot is good idea to our community is very helpful to us to our everyday life but be careful maybe sometimes may be our planet in future risk? there are so many kind of robot there are good robot and bad robot its like a people there are good people there are bad people? in the world? [ken18neth]
I don't have a set thought about this. Sometimes I think: if we keep doing what we are doing, we'll built a computer that will harm us. On other days, I think, hey, we're not that stupid. But maybe we are, I mean, isn't mankind a race that thinks nothing can harm them? Have a nice day [bieke81]
Very difficult question to answer! However, I feel once a time will come when computers will outcast human beings. Because every nation will use them to derive new ways of fighting against their enemy nations, That way, there will be a race of developing ways to destroy intelligence webs of opponent nations, and machine-dependent human beings will not be able to think further to stop this practice. A chaotic sitution will arise, when all computer systems will be taught to take their own decisions (as pre-programmed), there will not be enough time to rectify the wrongly fed instructions based on wrong data. That way computers will take actions to blow off nations and countries in micro seconds. Once fed to computers, human beings won't get time to divert or stop it, in lightning speed countries after countries will be destryed. Those coputer will be managed by robots, and those computers will also control some robots. Very dreadful days are coming... [prasanta]
I definitely think that in the future we could make machines that could take over the world, so no, I don't think that it is the greatest idea that we keep making them smarter and smarter or else the future generations just may be in trouble. [sagesunicorn]
