Should People Be Banned From Bringing In Foods And Drinks To The Cinema

i just read the newspaper today and there is a comment written by one of the reader in the your comment section saying that people shouldn't be allowed to bring foods inside the cinema... the reason is because they create too much noise... the plastic paper sound, the munching sound, etc... and it really distracts people from enjoying the movie... he even say that the distraction is worst than people talking on the cell phone during the movie... not to say the mess that the people left after they finish eating... what is your say on this matter??? do you agree or disagree??? do you usually bring foods and drinks to the cinema??? thanks in advance for responding to my discussion... take care and have a nice day everybody...

responses and comments:

in cenima here we are not allow to bring soft drinks and foods before we enter in the cenima but if you will have to buy a food from their canteen you are allowed to bring the food inside. I guess the owner of the cinema wants to have more incentives to the people who they are having fun in cenima. [patzel88]
I have never been to a cinema that doesn't allow food & drink inside. In fact Popcorn-Coke combo is so attached to the movie watching experience that I cannot imagine going to a cinema and not having one! I have done this all my years and when I was small, I inisted to getting one everytime , it was a Huge Treat! :-) However, some cinemas insist that audiences that can only carry food bought from their stalls and not from outside. Some cinemas allow all food - theirs as well as outside. I do get upset sometimes when people leave mess behind them and are careful while eating-sharing their stuff..It definitely acts as a huge turnoff! However , I have never been distracted by the sound of paper etc..I dont think they count much! especially because here, there aren't many people in the cinema in any given show. Even in packed shows I have not been distracted by the food people bring on but definitely by their chatter-comments or babies crying.. I would hate it if all cinemas banned all kinds of food-drink inside as I love to watch my movie cuddled with my Popcorn Tub on my lap! :) [rashmi1979]

we grew up watching movies with popcorn and soda ... i think it is unnecessary because you cannot also enjoy the movie when your starving and it feels good munching popcorn while your watching ... [planters]
lingli_78...I think thats part of the excitement of going to the movies, getting to eat popcorn and drinking soda while your watching it, theres nothing like movie popcorn, all that butter..lol. Most theaters play the movies so loud that I don't see how you could even hear all the munching anyway. It doesn't ever bother me... [walijo2008]

I've heard of this news before. I believe someone actually implemented this in the UK in certain cinemas. The reason I can think of is that some of the popcorn sold there can be quite smelly due to the butter. But in my country, we don't really have such a problem. As long as you don't eat too clumsily and noisily, I believe it is still not that bad. I don't mind if my friends eat popcorn or chips next to me, just make sure they don't eat it like there's no tomorrow. But when it comes to mobile phones, I cannot tolerate at all. If the person is answer phone call nearby me, I will SHHH him very loud. Another type of person is those who loves to shake their leg and also your chair! Once, I even turned around and snapped my finger in front of the person to get his attention and finally said "Can you please stop it?!" [daydreamer20]
Popcorn is smelly in the UK??? What are you talking about? lol We can eat popcorn in all the cinemas in the UK because the cinemas SELL it! People should have consideration when eating in cinemas, thats all, but where ever you go in life you will always find selfish people. [littletinker]

I don't think cinemas would want to implement this. The markup on the snacks sold in the cinema is so huge - they tend to cost between 2 and three times normal retail price (not wholesale) - that I think a rather large portion on a cinemas profits come from selling food. [egdcltd]
yes, i agreed this point .In fact, i take the food into the cinema before, just like popcorn. If you watch Disaster film or Horror film, the food can help relax your heart. Now many people prefer to watching film at home now.it is more freedom. [Tinna_He]

Hi lingli_78! Where i live, it is not allowed for people to bring their own foods and drinks to the cinema. But you can buy popcorn, chocolate, chips, sweets, ice and much more in the cinema and eat/drink it when you are watching the movie. The cinemas need this money, its expensive to have a cinema. But if you get caught bringing your own food or drinks you get trouble or they kick you out. Have a very nice day! [damato]
thanks for responding... it is the same here as well and i never want to buy snack from the cinema because the price is just ridiculous... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

They would be losing money if they implement something like this. That means they can't sell snacks and drinks at the concession stands. I usually bring in some snacks when I go to the movies but I'll still buy popcorn and soda there. Plus, you can't really enjoy a movie without the snacks and soda. That just doesn't sound right. [saizo6]
thanks for responding... yes, i agree with you that the cinema will lose something if they implement this... i hope people can be more courteous and discipline towards other people when they bring food inside the cinema so that everybody can enjoy the movie and the food at the same time... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I don't agree with the food not being allowed in the cinema. Personally I think it is simply so that the cinema's can sell the candy and things they have there. It hasn't ever been a problem for me to watch a movie if there is a person or persons eating something while the movie is going on. What they want for the items they sell at the cinema it is just too sky high for me so I just don't eat or drink anything while watching a movie in the cinema. [sunshinelady]
thanks for responding... i agree with you that the price of the snacks are just ridiculous at the cinema... i have a problem when people are making too much noise when they are eating... other than that, i am fine... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I agree with that, because the cinema is a public place, when you enjoy yourself maybe you will bring some troubles to the others, e.g. when you eat the chips the noise you made will affect the people around you. When we go to the ciname just enjoying is better than taking something to eat. [sophia1984]
thanks for responding... you are the first person so far that agree with this topic... i myself also hardly bring any food to the cinema when i am watching movie... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Hi lingli, The person has a point but I love bringing food in the cinema! LOL! Maybe they just need to implement a strict rule about proper disposal of garbage but will still allow people to bring food, drinks and use their cellphone! And there will be expected behavior like the use of Cp as to respect the other viewers! happyhappyhappy [checapricorn]
thanks for responding... i agree with you entirely... people just have to be more courteous and discipline towards other people and the problem will be solved... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

of course not.. i mean they should not be allowed to bring outside food.. but the food that is available in the cinema is packed such a way that it can be disposed easily.. i cant watch a movie without sipping a soft drink or munching popcorn.. i just cant watch a movie without doing anything like that..and i dont think they disturb other people much.. thank you [raulmetalhead]
thanks for responding... i do agree with your point... but sometimes some people really make very loud noise when they are eating which is very disturbing... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Hello There. I disagree if our cinema here will prohibit us in bringing foods while watching movies! I mean, I can't stand without eating something in the cinema whether it is a French fries or popcorns even when I am at home with my siblings and we decided to rent movies, my sister will make some snack. We have lots of junk foods or we will buy some crackers then she will fry it and dip it with vinegar. SO, I don't see why such people would say that it should be prohibited… I mean, other peeps really eat loud in the cinema but I should think that they should learn to discipline themselves but not banned it… And I don't think our cinema here will banned bringing foods in the movie house because that is their business as well, we buy our popcorns and drinks to their store. Goodluck and thanks for the discussion! Happy Mylotting! Cheers! [jesbellaine]
thanks for responding... yes, i do agree with you... i also like to munch on something while watching movies... so instead of banning it, i think people should be more courteous and discipline towards other people... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

they shouldn't ban people from bringing in food and drinks to the cinema..instead of banning, they should implement a rule regarding the proper disposal of garbage.. personally, i love eating snacks while the movie is going on.. but i always make sure to dispose my trash properly.. [gracie04]
thanks for responding... yes, i do agree with you... if they ban people from bringing food, it will disadvantage the people who want to enjoy the movie and eating at the same time... also, not all the people are not courteous and not responsible... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Here in the united State your not allowed to bring food or drinks into the theaters. The theaters make more money from the foods that they sell at the concession stands or counters than they do with the movie. I believe that if someone is caught bringing out side food into the theater they will be expelled from the theater. [deebomb]
thanks for responding... i agree with you... the cinemas make more money from the food rather than the selling of the tickets... and here it is not allowed to bring outside food as well... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

You can buy food and take it in to the cinema's here. I think that people just need to grow up, take responsibility for themselves and their children, and get some manners. Then the problem would be solved. I am annoyed by people who take their children, and them allow them to spill their crap everywhere and not make them be quiet or take them out when they are loud. Also, people seem to forget that just because we can't see them eating doesn't mean we can't hear them chewing! That sound gets under my skin. Hello! Chew with your mouth shut! It is unfortunate that cinmeas would have to even consider banning food for these reasons. It is too bad that society cannot be responsible and courteous to others. [jenseyedea]
thanks for responding... yes, i do agree with you... people have to learn to be more courteous to other people and responsible for their own trash... it is indeed a shame if the cinema have to ban people from bringing food inside the cinema because of these reasons... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

The cinemas I go to allow people to take some food and drinks. I think it is fine to eat something when you are watching a fantastic movie. But always remember the basic rules: don't disturb others while you are enjoying yourself. If you do,that will be very annoying. So don't eat the kind of food that makes too much noise. And never leave the trash behind when you leave the cinema. So as long as you don't disturb others,it's ok too take food to the cinema. [ilovemit]
thanks for responding... i entirely agree with you... as long as you can follow the basic rules and be courteous to other people, it is fine to bring food to the cinema... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Where i came from it is definitely allowed to bring foods and drinks inside as long as they are not encapsulated within a can. i honestly think it doesn't really matter if they bring foods inside as long as they consume it quietly. and with proper disposal units, no problem would emerge. [stargazerzoom]
thanks for responding... i entirely agree with you... as long as they can eat the food quietly and dispose the trash in a proper manner, i don't see any problem with people enjoying their food while watching the movie... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

The cinemas where I live you are not allowed to bring in your own food or snacks they want you to buy the snacks that they have in their theater at their extremely high prices that is why we don't go to the cinemas we wait until the moive comes out on dvd and then we can sit in our own home with our own snacks. [luvstochat]
thanks for responding... the cinema in my place also don't allowed people to bring outside food... but the price of the snacks and drinks in the theatre is way too high... that's why i prefer to watch movie at home and enjoy my own snack like you... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I do not agree and I do not disagree I mean People should respect though that there are other People to trying to watch the Film I do not go to Cinema's as I like my Comfort when I watch a Film but I have heard People say that People do not respect the fact when they eat that there are others who would like to see the Film [gabs8513]
thanks for responding... i entirely agree with you gabs... people should be more courteous when they eat in a movie and think about other people who are watching the movie... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I agree with this decision. In theater everybody coming to see a film ,Not for eating , is it? so this should banned. [shahanas]
thanks for responding... i think you are the second person that respond in this discussion and saying agree with the decision... i myself have no problem with people eating at the movie as long as they don't disturb me... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

no i dont think that people should be banned from bringing their own snacks to the theater its been years since i have seen a new movies in trhe theater but the last time i went the snacks were priced out of this world but i have heard that nothing has changed on that front. how can people afford to see the movie if they have to spend $5,or $10 dollars for their snacks to watch a $4 dollar movie when it comes out on dvd at blockbuster . [frygirl]
thanks for responding... i agree with you... the price of the snacks and drinks in the theatre is way too high... that's why i prefer to watch movie at home and enjoy my own snack... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

It's hard to say. As it has its disadvantage as well as advantage. Watching a movie when enjoying the snacks is nice. But somewhat it will bother others. After all, you are going to watch the movie rather than dining in the restaurant. If they really have to eat in the cinema, I hope they will try to behave themselves and try to bother others less. In brief, they have to be considerate and try to be quiet when they are eating. I love China [youless]
thanks for responding... i do agree entirely with your point... you make a very good point there... as long as people can be courteous towards other people, then it is fine to eat inside the cinema... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I don't see such a big disturbance from eating away while enjoying watching a movie. It's kind of sad and ironic how society put limitations in just about everything. Cinema theaters normally have food counters where you can easily buy it. For some people, it is more entertaining to munch away while watching. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't get it why people had to put up such a big fuss over little things. Also, that's why there's a cleanup afterwards in cinemas. I can understand if the cinema itself would not want you to bring in outside food. It's business for them and they'd rather you purchase from their own available food counters. But to ban bringing in foods and drinks to the theater altogether? That's like saying "you're not allowed to eat." I'd raise my eyebrows at that. By the way, I'm curious, from what newspaper did you read such comment? I disagree with it. [MariaD]
thanks for responding... i read the comment from one of the australian newspaper which i would prefer not to disclose it... the person has a problem with the extremely loud noise that people make while eating and disturb his enjoyment of watching the movie... so he is suggesting that the cinema banned people from eating inside the cinema altogether... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

where i go you cannot bring any of your food from outside but you can buy what they have there. I think its a rip off because they are so over priced. It doesnt make much sense either considering your are still making just as much noise or just as much of a mess [ninanow]

Wow this is a great question! I always have to have my popcorn and candy when we go to the movies. I do see the reader's point though about food creating too much noise. The reader is absolutely correct. Last week I was at the movies and the person next to me was munching loudly away. It was a little annoying, but we're all packed in there together and most of us are eating anyway. I do try to be as quiet as possible, but I know I'm not completely silent! Sometimes we bring in our own candy. My husband snuck in burritos once! Movie theatres don't make their money on the movies themselves - they make their money on the concessions (popcorn, candy, drinks). So we'll never see a ban on food in the cinema. Never. [rowantree]

I think that this is so people buy drinks and food from the cinema because they will lose money if everyone brings their own food. And the prices on that stuff is crazy. I prefer not to even go to the theater or cinema. I rarely watch movies so it is a waste of money for me if I was to go. I don't think people should be banned from bringing food and drinks inthe cinema. [SusanShayAvon]

I don't think foods and drinks should be banned. I think a lot of theaters would be shut down if that happens. At those prices, I'm sure that's where most of their profits come from. Besides, I think I would be more distracted with a empty stomach. I'd probaby just be more focused on what I was going eat when the movie was over than the movie its self. Also, small children need to have snacks to keep them quiet during the movie. If you have gone anywhere with small children then you know how important snack and juice are to your sanity. They're not able to tolerate hunger like adults. So in that case, what's more distracting, plastic wrappers or a crying child? [newtampaprincess]

To me that is the best part of going to the theater the snacks. It makes it special. I love movie theater popcorn, I don't drink sodas so I don't get those. [sweetdesign]
thanks for responding... yes, i do agree with you... the theater popcorn is very nice... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Its a hard decision to make as both have pros and cons, here in India in most of the cinema halls we are not allowed to take inside any food or drinks from inside and if we want something we have to buy from the stall inside. Anyway that's business, i think its ok in a way to ban foods inside the hall but this will not apply to everyone inside as there are people who cannot watch or who are used to watch movies with a pack of pop corns in their hands and i guess it will be difficult for them to apply this rule but people like me would go for the other option like banning the food inside as i really concentrate while watching movies and the sounds of plastics really disturbs. [healer]

They do sell popcorn and candies at the movies, don't they? Then do yo mean that they should not bring food from the outside into the cinema? I would say that the food that they sell at the lobby is a lot different from bringing in a bag of chips or stuff inside. It is perfectly acceptable to munch when you are watching a show as long as you keep quiet and do not make a loud noise. And that you clean up the mess if it is possible. We usually brought food and drink into the cinema, but what happened we ate mostly during the breaks and when they were doing the advertising. We did not eat while the show was on. [suspenseful]
Another trouble is those chairs spring up when you are trying to pick up that popcorn that fell. There is no place to put the bag so you have to hold it between your knees, all right if you are wearing slacks, but not all of us wear slacks some of us ladies were dresses or skirts. I was wondering whether they could have some quiet snacks. That would help - like chewing gum. [suspenseful]

Why don't you also consider the reason that they could sell more of their junk food to us in the cinema. Another reason, they sell food inside the cinema, with higher than outside market price. A medium coke cost about $5, and a hot dog about $3. What was that? A regular movie ticket is $10 already. You are not allowed to bring food to cinema, because you won't buy their snacks. In that way, they can make more profit. [jzbrynn]

I don't think food and drinks should be banned in the cinema. Well, I for one would love to watch while munching popcorn so I would not mind if other people also do munch their own snacks while watching. Now if there are people who are highly sensitive to the noise created by plastic papers, munching or sipping sounds, they have the option to just watch the film in the comfort of their home. Anyway the eating inside the cinema is not like eating in a picnic ground. As I myself would do, I don't really go the movie to eat but I eat inside in order to fully enjoy my stay there so I prefer to have something to munch while sitting and watching. I don't agree that the distraction is worst than people talking on the cell phone during the movie. The noise created by eating could be considered just white noise while if someone is talking at the phone it is just like you are beside two people talking aloud while sharing different stories and that is more annoying as it will really distract your watching. [salonga]
thanks for your response... i myself also like to munch on something while watching movies... otherwise, i feel not complete... people just need to be more courteous when they are eating in the cinema and try to minimise the noise... and i do agree with you that the noise of people talking on the cell phone is more annoying compare to the munching and sipping noise... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

As far as I know people have never been able to bring in food from home for the movies. They have always been allowed to buy food at the concession stand but bringing food from home is somthing that has alwasy been discouraged. I guess this is a rule that people really need to adhere to and look to fulfill. [snowy22315]
thanks for responding... yes, we are not allowed to bring food from outside here as well... that's why i prefer to watch movie at home rather than going to the cinema... it is cheaper and more relaxing... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I don't think food makes that much noise - the plastic does, you're right. But I still think it doesn't make that much noise if the person eating is somewhat near understanding. I actually like bringing food in the cinema because it helps me relax better - watching a movie that I've been anticipating, and eating the food that I like gives it the perfect ambiance :D Cellphones are another matter of course. Even sending/receiving SMS is irritating. But you know what's most irritating? When THE AUDIENCE ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY'RE WATCHING AT THAT MOMENT. That I can't take. Thanks for the response on my discussion! [oyenkai]
thanks for responding to my discussion as well... i also like to bring food to the cinema as well... but i try my best to minimise the noise when i eat it... and i can't stand people talking about the movie as well when i am watching... it spoils the fun and disturbs me a lot... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Hi lingli_78! It is not often that I watch movies in the cinemas; however, in those rare times, I do bring food and drinks with me when watching. And I don't mind other people bring food and drinks in the cinema either. It is fun watching movies while eating. haha..And I wouldn't agree if food will be banned in the cinemas because it will be less enjoyable watching. Besides I have seen moviegoers throwing their empty drinks and food packs in the trash bin although I must admit that there are some who just leave their litter behind. What irritates and distract me are people who talk too much while the movie is ongoing or their cell phones keep on ringing. Take care always. lovelots..faith210 [faith210]
thanks for responding faith... yes, i do agree with you that it is fun to watch movie while eating and i enjoy it as well... as long as we do it courteously and be considerate to other people, it is fine... and i dislike it as well when people talk during the movie or let their cell phone ring... it is so inconsiderate... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

People go to movies for the sake of enjoyment and entertainment and carrying food is must have if you are going for a movie. The combination of pop corns and cold drink is an essential part of movie and without this, movie cannot be enjoyed. Some cinemas insist to buy food from their stalls only and do not permit to bring food from outside. It is all right from their sale and profit point of view.As far as noise created by munching of food and of plastic paper is involved,it is negligible. If carrying food, people should be little cautious not to spill the remaining food items and papers. [bamrahkirti]
thanks for responding... i agree with you that watching movie without pop corns and cold drink is not very enjoyable... as long as the people do it courteously, i don't mind at all people bringing food to the cinema... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

we cannot completely accept this comment because some enjoy watching movies by having some snacks items.some may not feel comfortable after having their stomach fully loaded.so people should be allowed to have snacks items ,but not in plastic covers instead of that should have paper bags .using mobile should be completely banned. [rsreekanth]
thanks for responding... i just hope people will be more courteous when they bring food to the cinema and using mobile phone is definitely a NO as it is being very inconsiderate to other people and can disturb people who are enjoying a good movie... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Well here in the USA the majority of the movie theatres don't allow customers to bring their own... However, that doesn't stop people, especiall if you have a big purse to bring in your own popcorn... After all who in their RIGHT MIND would normally spend $22.00 on 2 popcorns and 2 pops...? [Chocobear]
thanks for responding... here, they don't allowed people to bring their own food to the cinema as well... and you are right... i will never buy the food at the cinema because the price is ridiculous... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

hello lingli...yeah i bring food from the cinema..i do agree with you it creates noise..but i don't think im in favor of banning or whatever..i guess the theater owner should post guidelines on what to bring instead of forbidding it..i like eating inside... [vanities]
thanks for responding... i also disagree if they banned people entirely from bringing food inside... people just have to be more courteous and discipline when they eat inside a cinema and think about other people... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I am more "conservative" and bring in the usual "accessories" - popcorn and coke. And I believe I am not making so much noise, but it is true that some people bring candies, chocolate and whatnot. Usually these kind of products are packed in bag that usually produces annoying sound. But to ban people because they're bringing foods in... well guess what that'd do to the industry. I mean, most of the people today can already watch movies at home in the same atmosphere they get in cinema, so go figure what would the ban do to their box office :) [neuronic]
thanks for responding... i agree with you that the industry will suffer a lot if they start banning people to bring food inside the cinema because people will prefer to rent a movie and watch it at home at their own comfort... especially with LCD TV and plasma booming nowadays... we can get the same quality of image watching from home and in the cinema... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I have occasionally brought food into a movie, but mainly because with a diabetic husband and a daughter verging on it, there are few choices for them at the counter. I do make sure I use ziploc bags to put them in. This avoids the crinkling sounds. Cell phones are another matter. Turn the dang things off! If you are waiting for a call that is so important you can't sit through a movie without it, then wait until you can. They are enormous interruptions and some folks don't have the good sense to leave the theater and go to the hallway or lobby to converse. One lady, who obviously couldn't hear well and thought no one else could either, was actually shouting through a five-minute conversation with her buddy --- in the theater next door! An usher asked her to leave and she smacked him with her purse. Eventually two ushers 'ushered' her out. But if the gentleman wants a place where folks won't eat, will be enormously clean and thoughtful, rental movies are available for viewing at home. [mysticmaggie]
thanks for responding... yes, i do agree with you that people just have to be more courteous towards other people... using cell phone in the cinema is definitely a NO as it is a big distraction to other viewers... and you are right too... the gentleman can just rent a movie and watch it at home at his own comfort if he doesn't want anybody to disturb him... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I don't think think people should be disallowed from bringing food inside the cinema. I have never felt distracted by by any noise simply because I haven't heard any noise- any plastic paper sound, etc. As regards to the mess, the cinema sweepers/people (whatever you call them) clean it up after each show. Hence, cinema-goers simply cannot see the mess during the show as it is dark! In Mumbai(India) where I live, people are anyways disallowed from bringing outside food into the cinema hall. You can only purchase food from the cinema canteen and take it inside. [countless]
thanks for responding and welcome to mylot community... here we are not allowed to bring outside food as well to the cinema... you can only bring food that you purchase from the canteen which the price is really ridiculous... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I will definitely give my vote to ban anyone from bringing food that disperse out even a wee bit of aroma into the cinema. Even though some cinema try to cut down the "leftovers" by introducing or allowing only "cinema-approved" food, often popcorn, I am too annoyed by the smell of the popcorn. I am allergic to the aroma of pop-corn. [whyaskq]
thanks for responding... you are the third person here who agree to ban food inside the cinema... and also, you are the first person here who are allergic to the smell of popcorn... interesting... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

wellwhen you consider the fACT THAT THE CINEMA AUTHORITY MAY HAVE THEIR OWN SNACKS CENTER THEN IT WILL BE BAD BUSINESS FOR THEM TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO BRING IN THEIR OWN FOOD TO THE CINEMAS,IT DOES NOT MAKE ECONOMIC SENSE FOR THEM TO ALLOW SUCH,BUT IN CASE OF PEOPLE WHO NEED SPECIAL DIETS I THINK THIS ISHOULD BE ALLOWED FOR THE SAKE OF THEIR HELATH .OOPS!! SORRY ABOUT MY TYPING IN THE UPPER CASE [BYOLA2871]
thanks for responding... i agree with you that people with special diets should be given special consideration by the cinema authority... and it is OK with your upper case typing... you are forgiven... :-) take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

If the cinema didn't sell foods it would not be profitable for them to even run the movie as it is now they are charging $8.00 a ticket now can you imagine what they would charge us if they stopped selling popcorn and soda? [kijiky]
thanks for responding... yes, i can't imagine how much they will charge us for the ticket if they start banning food inside the cinema... right now, we are paying $15 on ordinary day and on tuesday specials, we are paying $9 which is too much for me... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I haven't been to the cinema in more years than I care to remember but when I did use to go to the movies we were never allowed to bring any food or drink into the movie house. If you wanted to eat something then you had to buy it inside the theater and if you were caught with food that you had brought in then you were kicked out of the theater. Always made sense to me because of course the people that own the theater also wanted all of the snack money. They would loose a fortune if they allowed people to come in with their own food! happy [sagesunicorn]
thanks for responding... i also seldom go to the cinema and much prefer to watch the movie on DVD at home in my own comfort... it is much cheaper and relaxing for me... here, we are also not allowed to bring outside food inside the cinema... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

Wow! I've never hear of this before!!! No, I don't think it should be banned. For one thing, even though I absolutely hate the horrible prices that cinemas charge for their concessions, the concession sales are vital to the cinema making money and I have heard that it is the only real money that the cinema makes. If they cut out the concession stands they would probably have to raise the price of movies so much that the normal person could not ever afford to go. [eclecticeducation]
thanks for responding... i agree with you entirely... if they have to ban people bringing food inside the cinema entirely, then they will lose lots of money and they have to raise the ticket money... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

I have brought things to the cinema before, but it is not something I do most of the time. I think they are banned for profit's sake, nothing more. I have seen them sell candy in plastic bags, along with other noisy containers, so I do not think the noise is an issue. When you charge a price for something that can be bought multiple times for the same amount, then you have a lot to lose when people bring in outside snacks. [UtopianIdealist]

No, foods and drinks should not be banned! It's bad enough that it costs a fortune to watch a movie--one! Used to be you could get a double-feature, but not in my neck of the woods. Why should I spend $10-15 per person for a stupid movie that's never worth that much money. Then the highway robbery continues when you have the nerve to want a snack, and don't even think of wanting some curly fries and a mere hotdog! Two dollars for a soda? when I can get the very same kind and size outside in vending machine for 75 cents less!!! Puh-leese....I will go to my local supermarket and get a supply of M&Ms, some Goobers and Hot Tamales, etc and a nice cold bottle of soda for less than the vending machine price. And won't I stuff it all into a big ol' bag and camoflague it with some shopping mall bags, then sit down and wait for the lights to go out and pull out my contraband and munch my way through the movie... We are not all making lots of money to afford the super-inflated price of a psuedo theatre experience... That's why Cable, Net Flix and Blockbusters are so popular. So for me...its movies from the local library at $1.50 each (up to 5), my couch and all the food I can eat.... [penny78]

Well, one thing I WILL say though, and I laugh at the scenario every single time...If you are too easily distracted by EVERYTHING that moves, you should NOT be going to a movie theatre! Now the person who wrote that comment in the paper, clearly does not know the business world of cinemas. The concession stand is their biggest profit margin, besides the "everything" theatre, and when I say this, I am referring to the biiiiiig theatres that have birthday party rooms, over 10 screens, electronic games area, large choice of concessions food, as well as fast food stands, which are a personal favourite of mine, because when I go to the movies, every now and then, I just want to munch on the french fries from burger king while I watch the movie. Where is such a theatre located you ask? Well, various places all over the world my fellow peeps! The theatre I am referring to is at the Chinook mall in Calgary Alberta, Canada. NOW, as to the noise "pollution" in the theatre, chances are this person went to a "not so good" theatre, because the proper sound set up of said theatre SHOULD have been loud enough that you won't even notice the people munching and crunching around you. I do usually bring in a drink, be it a coffee, a slurpie, whatever. Not much for the whole eating during a movie, except on occasion, for example, "Oh? You got skittles eh? Oh no no, no thank y- well yeah ok, I'll have a few...." and of course my french fries, also on occasion. The cell phone talker? Again, prolly a crappy theatre, because the ushers should be following up on that. Same with the eating, it obviously gets cleaned up after the movie by the staff, yeah sucks for them, but oh well, it's part of their job. I will say this though, obnoxious little sugar-honey-iced-tea heads need to smarten the frack up, because oh yeah, they just REMIND me how COOL it is to talk loud, throw food around, keep their feet up on the back of my seat, sometimes KICKING it as well, and when I turn around, they'll keep doing it, harder even, and THEN have the guts to say what a crappy movie it was! Well, gee, I guess when you pay 12 bucks for a movie JUST to keep your mouth flapping, yeah, well I guess it does suck, BUT NOT AS MUCH AS THEM! ok, I'm done he he! [candymarie]

Personally, I don't think that food from home should be banned from the cinemas. If the theatres would allow it, the customers would be willing to pay more to sit and eat their own food in the cinema. The customers would be more comfortable, especially if they are on a diet. Although I haven't been caught, I usually sneak in a coke and food... although it would be kind of suspicious to wear a jacket in the middle of summer! [stephanjohnson]

in our place, people may bring their own food inside the cinema. watching movies is also a way of relaxing, and sometimes we munch food to relax, so i guess, people shouldn't be banned from bringing food inside. and as of those cinemas that doesn't accept those who bring their own food but are only allowed to buy in their store, well, that's business... they want to increase their sales... and for those who uses their cellphones inside the cinema, well, i think that's being rude. the cinemas where we go to, have an advertisements reminding people to turn off their phones or turn it to silent mode so as not to distract others. [Nhey16]

I married a girl with a big purse, who hasn't brought their own snacks into the theater? Its almost a right of passage to bring in something you bought at a store for $5 less than what the movie place charges. People talking during a movie or yaking on their cell phones isn't the problem. Its people who make out during the film, that's my pet peeve. [gitfiddleplayer]

the movie houses near me have always banned it-people still bring things in though mainly because their concession prices are ridiculous. i just by pass the whole thing and wait for the movie to be on cable. [scarlet_woman]

I agree not allowed to bringing food and drink to the cinema... It really is a noise... sometime, if they are a gang for the movie, If there bringing food and drinks, during the movie, they will start offering their friend food or drinks...it really noisy... I not usually bring food and drink to the cinema, I not use to eat during watching movie... I like to enjoy movie... [candysky]

I am sure the theaters do not allow this because it would compete with their snack bar which is outrageous. One theater where I went to college had BYOB night...not beer but bucket. for popcorn and you only paid something like fifty cents or a $1 for a fill in your bucket. [taface412]

Hai Lingli! I generally take nuts with me when I go to cinema. But since long I have not gone to cinema hall. But I have seen, people take cocacola can and something like this to break long time starvation. But I did not find any problem with it. [aminul8427]

LoL ~ That is funny because I'm a huge movie cinema fan. However, I rarely go to the theater anymore. Several reasons actually. We moved to a new city. We no longer live near the $1 theater where we live. I used to bring outside drinks and snacks from other venues to theaters. Since I knew that it wasn't right, I stopped going to the theater altogether. The theater can get messy, sure enough, as long as that theater doesn't have a fully staffed team. Most of the theaters hire young people in high school. Some of these kids have no idea of responsibility, and don't really care if they do the job they were hired to do. Some of them don't even like cleaning. Others that do care to do a good job easily are influenced and don't like having to do the job on their own. So it is a businesses responsibility to outline the rules and regulations before servicing people in the public. If there weren't any rules or regulations, then people could basically do anything, and become unruly if they didn't have a set of rules or guidelines to follow. It is really a matter of disrespect for authority. After a while I realized this and therefore I stopped going to the theater. If I do decide to go, then I will either eat before going to the theater, or make sure I have enough money with me to go that that theater's concession stand. I don't think that the noise from snacks that people eat in a theater cinema is too loud to be distracting enough for the movie watcher to enjoy the show at all. I also don't think that people on purpose come to a theater to intentionally be obnoxious to others by making it difficult for them to watch a show. Now I go to the local REDBOX, that way I can eat whatever I want and be as LOUD as I want to be all in the comfort of my own home. I can also fast forward and rewind or pause, I love watching movies with subtitles as it allows me to read everything while the show is going on, so that can hear everything that is said. As even some of the best shows audio goes up and down to a point of not clearly hearing what is said. I hate that. Other movies like Passion of the Christ show subtitles already, primarily because the main language wasn't English. No matter what language the show is filmed in as long as an English subtitles are available. [hdjohnson]

For me and my family part of the going to the theater experience is getting the pop and popcorn while watching the movie. That is how they make most of their money so don't see how that could be banned. The cell phone issue is another thing! NO ONE should be on or have a cell phone on (unless it is vibrate) during a film others are trying to watch. That is just rude in my opinion. [quinnkl]

I do not think so. Eating an ddrinking during the movie is also part of the entertainment and so, should not be banned. But people could take care not to make too much sound of the plastic cover etc.. But cell phones should not be used in the movie hall because that would be too much of a distraction. [Frederick42]

I don't think that people should be banned bringing foods or drinks to the cinema. Ilike eating popcorn or drinking soda while watching a movie. If one is polie he wont make much noises when eating or drinking. I don't think that it distracts other people a lot. I hate more mobile phones which ring in the cinema, although they are advised to switch them off beforehand. (c) ronaldinu 2009 - the more people I meet-the more I love my dog [ronaldinu]

I understand that the cinema make some money out of all the food they say there, but it is true that the noise is annoying. At least before the film starts there are many announcements and trailers of new films so most people manage to eat their noisy food before the movie starts. [overwings]

Here in Indian Cinema halls the food items can be teken inside the theatre from their canteen itself not from outside. Whenever we go for a movie in the interval we go and get a popcorn or some items to have or to munch something and watch the movie that is interesting by sharing and eating. We cant think of the movie with out any of this items or the kids will be annoyed if we dont buy anything for them to eat. [nini89]

At some cinemas they offer popcor and nachos. Both are noisy. The cinema doesn't want outside food because they will lose money, period.I haven't paid for popcorn in a theater in 26 years. Back then it wasn't as expensive. My mom and I would get to theater early, get the popcorn and sit. By the time the movie started, the popcorn was gone. These days I don't buy any food at the theater. I see the movie and then I go to eat. Most of the time, since I see the early morning showing, very few people buy popcorn either. [sarahruthbeth22]

I must say that I am guilty of bringing my premium snacks to a movie. One thing for sure - I do not bring my snacks in any form of paper, small ziplock bags are the best, you have to be a navy-seal to compete against the competition. Great topic discussion. [powermannx]

I don't think so. They should not be banned as even though it is still banned to bring the food in till now, people are still doing it anyway. It is a great pleasure to eat while watching a movie. I understand that some people do not clear all the rubbish after the movie but still does not make any difference :) [treviewz]

hi my friend,i enjoy foods and drinks in cinema.but what the reader concerned are all right. i think this behaviour should be controled but not banned. [sophialin]

I don't think they should ban against people bringing food in the cinema. Once my husband and I took our girls to watch a movie it was Kung Fu Panda at the time. We spent $30 just for the food and then went back for more drink b/c we ran out and a candy no telling how much that was but for that amount we could of went to a nice place and got some real food. I didn't see the price of the movie but when I went to see the movie Twilight with a group of girls I noticed the price to get in the show was $9 for 1. I think that is crazy for a couple of dollars more you could buy the movie and if you get a coupon for $5 off the movie which they have most of the time and the first week it comes out its on $16.99 at walmart you might as well get the movie. You can watch it more then once and pause when you have to potty. [mflower2053]

Well here is my opinion on this. I feel they do not want people to bring in food because they do not make any money that way. Most cinemas make money from their food because the prices are so high. I mean we went to the theater a few months ago and it costs us 10$ to see the movie there was me my boyfriend and my two girls not we got some nachos 2 drinks and 1 candy if I can remember right it costs 20$! I mean now that is why I feel they do not want people to bring their own. I never bring my own we usually do not get anything because of the prices, so someday I might take a big purse that way I do not have to pay the high prices, anyway I hope this answers your questions and so forth. Take care and happy mylotting to you. happy [momtrying2makeit]

I think wherever we go, most cinemas don't allow outside food and drinks and I tend to agree up to a point. However, the garbage issue is also including the cinema's own food and drinks. I think it's actually a marketing strategy so that cinema patrons will buy their food and drinks, instead of outside ones. I would love the idea of having the flexibility to bring our own say, popcorn and drinks home-made style or bought outside and they should put at least 2 garbage bins in the theaters itself so that patrons could easily dispose them without littering. [zed_k4]

Cinemas where I live only allow you to bring food in that you have bought in the cinema and I think that is ridiculous as the food is soo expensive, it is about £5 for a hot dog and £2/3 for a drink. It annoys me when people are eating crunchy or smelly food in the cinema, such as Nacho's which are a popular cinema choice. However I am fine with people eating other foods such as sweets, and I am fine with people drinking. I do not think people should be banned for eating and drinking, but they should have curtsey for others and choose food that is not disruptive or messy. [Elixiress]

here in our place the cinemas are not strict on bringing foods inside the movie house. they even sell different variety of food outside of it. and its not banned or anything here. its legal and much enjoyable if you could bring some foods. you can really enjoy the movie as well as enjoying each others company and foods! happy [jheLaichie]

I think that food helps the movie goers to relax. If we're annoyed by the noise from the food, then we can simply have a rule that says what kind of foods are not allowed - chicharon for example should not be an option (especially if they're bringing vinegar into the cinema LOL). I usually have a tumbler of pop corn when I watch a movie in the cinema. It helps me get the movie feel so I enjoy the experience better :) Thanks for the response on my discussion! [oyenkai]

Yes I agree. There is lot of disturbance, noise, filth caused by people eating food in the cinema hall. However, I like to eat something while watching movies on TV at my home, as this is my private home. [suruchi86]
