What Are We Going To Do With Our Vhs Tapes

I am sure that many of you movie lovers like and have many of the VHS tapes...Now they are out dated because we are all going for DVD's....So what are your plans for you VHS tapes????????? Are you going to transfer them to DVD's or keep them the way they are and hope the VHS recorders are still available for sale...The last player i bought is only good with DVD;s, so what are your plans? I have all the Disney Movie's on VHS tapes....

[question posted by slickcut]

responses and comments:

We have lots of VHS tapes, DV tapes, Slides and old films that we are all going to transfer to DVDs. The tapes that holds old memories are too valuable not to take care of. [teison2]
That is a very good idea...I agree it is very important to save our memories...I have home movies on VHS that i also plan to put on DVD's...... [slickcut]

I must be one of the lucky one's. I only have two VHS tapes, there is one I would like to transfer to a dvd. Most likely will never get it done though, as I do not have a clue of how to do it. [Goodie123]
You can take the VHS tape to any drug store such as Walgreens or CVS and they will do it for you......You are very lucky to only have 2... [slickcut]

Old VHS tape is great for stringing around the garden to keep out the deer. [Transdisc]
Wait, does this really work...the deer usually get more of our plantings than we do. [Debs_place]

Eventually I want to get a VCR/DVD recorder. I would like to transfer my home movies over to the DVD's. I think we will still be able to buy VCR's for awhile yet. I still have 8 track tapes(remember them). I have a factory installed 8 track player in my car and still listen to the tapes, hehe. [Polly1]
If you plan to get a VCR that will play the big tapes you had better do so soon..It is not easy to find a player that plays's VHs's,they are all changing to the Disk DVD's [slickcut]

do we know HOW long DVDs are going to hold up? My roomie has VHS tapes over 20 yrs old, will a DVD hold up that long? I suggest you consider keeping them, in a cool dry place.... [ElicBxn]
Thanks for the best response, Slick! Keep those VHS tapes rolling! [ElicBxn]

You can either keep your VHS, and purchase a DVD to go with it, or you can get your VHS transferred to DVD. But, in the stores there are more DVD movies and tapes. [chpro1211]

Yes, I can see that everything is going to be more and more DVD. We have hundreds of VHS tapes ... most are movies and a lot of them are TV shows we recorded that we loved to watch. Since we have a VHS recorder and player I suspect that we will be watching these VHS tapes and recording on them for a long time. Every tape I purchase now is a DVD. The only VHS tapes I really see for sale is maybe on ebay. I don't think I will transfer my VHS tapes to DVD. The cost to do this would be too much. I have gradually been replacing our favorite VHS movies with DVD. Believe it or not I still have hundreds of Beta tapes too! We still have our Beta player and recorder. I have not seen a Beta tape for years and years. I have not played them for years and I don't even know if they are still playable! [marilynut]
Yes i also still have a vcr that will play the tapes, but they will soon not have them available any longer..So if the one i have should break i will not be able to buy another one...I know it will be expensive to transfer all my VHS tapes to DVDs but i might just transfer the most precious ones, like family tapes... [slickcut]

I sold most of mine on eBay...just a few that were not in condition to be sold, I still have. I do have a VHS/DVD combo, but I never use the tape side. [poprocks]
Well, dang it all! Now I will have to change it again! [poprocks]

We have a lot of VHS, but most of them are home movies, not "movie-movies," and we haven't watched them in ages, so I don't think there's a crisis at hand. Although, I was disappointed when we purchased a new television that our old VCR was no longer compatible. I love VHS. In fact, I think I only own two DVDs. (What can I say, I'm not a movie person! :D) I hate that things go out of style so quickly. It's DVDs now, but soon it'll be Blu-Ray. :D Personally, I'll still be clinging to my VCR and VHS. [Antithesis]
oh i know one of the days it will be something new coming out and we will be wondering what to do with our DVD's.... [slickcut]

I have a few VHS tapes but not many. I rent tapes when I want to watch them. I live in a small house and there isn't a lot of room for extra things. So I just go to the video place and rent and return when I am done watching. So I don't have that problem of what to do with my VHS tapes. [sunshinelady]
well i also live in a small house but I have home movies on VHS,i might just transfer a few to the disk Dvd.... [slickcut]

I don't have any VHS tapes, because i don't have a video home system. But if i had some ,i would keep them as a memory for the old good days, i'm a people who like to think of the old things and old people... [lovelemonlee]
Oh i am like you to ,i love the old times..I will not be getting rid of my tapes for sure but i was wondering what would be a good way to watch them when all the VHS players are no longer in the stores.... [slickcut]

I gave a lot of them to the thrift store but I kept my favorite ones that I haven't been able to get on DVD yet. We have a DVD/VCR combo for just this reason. [horsesrule]
Oh i know a lot of people have donated VHS tapes, the thrift stores have a lot of them... [slickcut]

Get Tv Card(pci, usb,or pcmcia):,plug an av cable from the back of vcr to the card then use the software supplied with the tv card to write input to an avi file the playback should be 1 to 1 so might to leave the tapes playing as you go to bed [mukhtarsaad]

I have many Disney movies on VHS tape. My daughter has a TV with build in VHS recorder, so i don't have any plans with them right now. I can watch them on my daughters TV. [Jody20]
well i can still watch them since i have a combo VHS/Dvd player...However the store mananger told me soon these will be gone because they are replacing the VHS players with Just Dvd players.... [slickcut]

I've wondered about this myself - I have over 300 movies on VHS and have no idea how I would put them on DVD but am sure it would cost a fortune to pay someone to do it. At the same time I've worked years to collect most of these movies and certainly don't want to throw them out - I still watch them. [byfaithonly]
I don't have any idea how to do that..I know my son took some to a place like walgreens or Cvs,and had then transfered but i have no idea what it cost.....I am keeping mine too...... [slickcut]

What I intend on doing is taking my videos and putting them if I can of DVD's because a lot of them are getting old and worn out, and then I will box them up and hang on to them up so I can have the original as proof that I bought them. It is legal to make a back up for your own purposes, but I am in NO posittion to go out and buy DVDs of videos that I currently own. So if I can put them on DVD I will Mooch [oneandonemakesix]

Just keep them. I have a ton of them with mostly kid's videos and Disney on them. We still have a couple VCR's so we will keep them and watch them until they break, I suppose. I think you can have them transferred to disc somehow but it is probably expensive to do. [lolalolacherrycola]
that is what i will do..I am sure it will be expensive to have them transfered to DVD... [slickcut]

I've never made it a practice to buy VHS movies previously. I've only used VHS tapes to record shows for watching. These tapes are now rotting in my TV cabinet. They are probably worthless now, so no loss to me even if I throw them away in the garbage bin tomorrow. I've not used my VCR for ages since I bought and installed a DVD player. [lexus54]

if yu have VHS tapes you know you will nolonger enjoy I suggest you take them to a local VA hospital....this is also true for old books and magazines. I live in St. Louis Mo. and they are always happy to receive them. Or if you live in a condo community or apartment complex they might have a lending library you could give them to.....if their isn't one maybe you could start one. [muscles4me]
I would not mind donating some of mine but a lot of mine are of my family, and i want to keep those... [slickcut]

We had absolutely hundreds of them and we did not know what to do with them and so we just donated them to a charity shop as there was nothing really that we could do with them. I would have sold them but we could not test them to check that they worked and so the charity shop said that they could so we just did that. [gemini_rose]
Well I would have thought that you could get them transferred to a disc somehow, we have our wedding on video, I have kept that. I guess when I ever get some time I will get round to seeing if I can get it transferred myself. [gemini_rose]

u know what i think that is a really good question! i wanted to convert my old VHSs to DVDs from a recording studio. i think converting them to dvds and keeping the originals are a good thing to do! very soon they will become as valuable as the old roll-up video tapes. keeps them man after converting them to dvd [zoe_chugie]
They may become valuable some day...But it will be a while because they are still selling a few cassette tapes at some stores.. [slickcut]

We have replaced a lot of them with the DVD's and for the ones that are rare and/or out of print now we got a recorder so we could run them off on to DVD's. Most or our VHS tapes are now in the basement packed away with our vinyl albums. [ycanteye]
Sony makes the one we bought. It records on to as well as plays DVD's and VHS. Unfortunately you have to do the VHS to DVD in real time because there is no high speed dub but it is worth it in the long run. [ycanteye]

Sometimes I have been lucky to see DVD movies (that I also have on VHS) on sale or for a good price, so I replace them and either give VHS to my son or sell it at yard sale, etc. I do have a DVD/VHS recorder, but haven't learned how to use it yet. [sacdp29]
Haha that sounds like me ,, figuring out how to use it..Lol [slickcut]

Well since its a lot more expensive to transfer them over to DVD, I just bought a dual player that playes both DVD and VHS. A little more expensive but considering the cost for transfers not a bad investment. [eeyore39]

I'm keeping them and the VCR's. The way I see it, there's always room for a little hanging on to the past. [LisaHW]

Actually 99% of my VHS tapes are movies I taped from TV...I think I have maybe 6 original movies on VHS. I have been slowly replacing them with DVD. The fact that I have to buy them is making me really decide whether they are worth keeping or not. As I replace them, I've been giving them away to friends and family for their kids to watch or for themselves. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~ [twoey68]

I have a few I should transfer, but mostly they are just movies I've taped for my granddaughter.. we have a new one along the way, so hopefully we can get to enjoy them again.. But even if not, we have enough movies on DVD and on the tv to be happy. What I really need though is a DVD recorder! so I can tape movies on DVD. They take up so much less space! - But I really should check on some family vhs's I have which my sister made up of old family photos.. and transfer them.. as VHS's can demagnetize (or something) and the film is rubbed out.. But I've stored these away from the machinery so hopefully they're ok. [flowerchilde]

i'm transfering mine over. i usually give the old tapes away to friends if they want them.i kind of feel bad about just throwing them out. [scarlet_woman]

I've recently started going though my old VHS tapes and i've decided to give them to charity shops, there are still people out there who don't have DVD's so hopefully these will be of use to those people! [Bizziebod]

I still use them. Some of the movies I have are not available on DVD and probably never will be. I still use our VCRs to record shows when I'm out or record movies for my kids to watch at a later date. We've got a boatload of movies I've taped off of Disney and Nick and Cartoon Network for them to watch. It saves a lot of money instead of buying the DVDs at $25 a piece, I can tape it for the cost of a VCR tape. [MooPile]

I have a lot of them. I plan on giving them away to someone having a yard sale. I tried to sell a group of 20 on ebay and it didn't sell at 99 cents. LOL My vcr is broken. I went to wal=mart to get one and they didn't have any. Just dvd players with a vcr together. I don't plan on getting another vcr. [coolseeds]
We rented some dvds yesterday after I posted to this discussion. The video store was using a vhs tape as a doorstop to hold the front door open. LMAO [coolseeds]

I have a duel player one side is for dvd's the other is for vhs, and I have so many good movies on vhs, and at some garage sales and rummage sales the people have a lot of good movies to sell. See no need in getting rid of them as long as we have a player to play them on. I would love to transfer them to dvd's and i have a friend that says she can show me how so will see if she can then will probably keep them, any way. Or give them to whoever wants them, besides if the dvd stops working i still got the vhs side to play them on [bdugas]
THEY always seem to be making something better, I just bought a $400. camcorder not 2 years ago and was told the other day that it is outdated. How the heck can it be outdated, appears that right after I bought it they cam e out with ones that uses dvd's instead of 8mm tapes, now the man could of said wait a week and the new ones would be out. Well they will just have to for get me buying another one, as long as this one does what I need not buying more. [bdugas]
