I would say that I perfer the movies over the books anyday. Sometimes if the movie intrests me I might read the book but otherwise I wouldn't. There are so many great films out by Stephen King and I think he does a wonderful job at it. He is very talented. [nicholejade]
I haven't read any Stephen King novels yet. But I've watched some of his movies and I can say that my favorite is THE IT. It scared the hell out of me.blink I wasn't able to turn off the lights in my room the night that I watched it. I've watched The Shining also, it was okay but it didn't scare me the way The It did. [marababe]
Hie Dfollin, I love his movies and always intrigued with horror shows or books. But he's the mastermind of all. The first time I saw his face on one of his books I couldn't believe what I saw, he just made a lasting impression in my mind....lol I like "The Shining" but I prefer 'The Stand' and it gave me the creeps the most. The Langolier was pretty cool too. Nowadays I feel not much real gripping horror shows like it used to be. I am still hoping he will come up with something great again either shows or books. [Desierra1004]
My favorite King movie is Misery. There are only two characters. It takes masterful skills to make such a simple movie to deliver suspense for the audience. Shining is another one. This movie may make lasting impacts on some audience. Imagine someone lives in a big empty building. Imagine when security guard doing round in the building in the night. What do they expect when entering a long hallway. Imagine one's spouse having problem, drifting away to his/her own weird word. [alexwander]
I've never read any of his books - too intensly weird for me, but I've seen a couple of movies. The best ones that I've seen are Delores Claiborne and the Green Mile. [Essie119]
I would say that "The Rose" is the greatest movie of Stephen King. It's about a house which seems to be alive. One feature about Stephen King's movies is the long duration. This movie even lasts for about 3 hours. But I enjoy throughout the whole movie. Recommended [jofeli]
"The Rose" was a good one too. [dfollin]
I really like the movie of The Shining and when I read the book I found it was quite different, so I liked both of them for different reasons. I also heard Children of the Corn being read on the radio. It is a strange story and I would not have read the book itself but it was interesting to hear it. I have not read any other books by him. [paid2write]
I have not read "Children of the Corn",but I started watching the movie and it was too weird and I turned it off. [dfollin]
I generally like books better, more detail and more character development. The Shining was a great movie though, still loved the book more. I like early SK, his more recent stuff doesn't do it for me anymore. He used to be my favorite author. Some of my favorite SK books are: The Talisman The Stand Salem's Lot The Shining Pet Semetary Misery I usually don't care for short stories but Night Shift was great, each story was entertaining. [thelastwolf113]
Wow, that's cool. A real life friend of mine went to the high school where SK taught, she never had him as a teacher but still cool. I prefer the books, there always seems to be something missing from the movie. I've seen Dale in a few movies, he is good. [thelastwolf113]
The Shining was my first intro to Stephen King and I loved it!! My favorites are The Dark Half, Firestarter, The Stand, and my all time favorite is The Eyes of a Dragon. It's like a fairy tale. Have you read that one? I love all of them! I do prefer the books because it's "my" vision of his story and not always the director's, although I though Christine stuck to my vision quite well. The original Shining with Jack Nicholas was better but the TV version hit all of the parts left out in the theater movie. My least favorite was Misery. [nanajanet]
Haha, do you want to hear something cute? Back in the mid 80's I bought this old 1973 Dodge Polera, a HUGE and long old car. It was great and I would still have it today if it did not use so much gas. Well, it sort of looked like Christine, so we started calling the car Christine. When I sold it to someone I told him, "Her name is Christine, take good care of her." He wrote me a note, a year later, "Christine is doing fine, thanks for a great car!" [nanajanet]
I'd Say that The Shinning is the most memorable. I think that alot of his books work better on the big screen, especially The Green Mile which is a really excellent movie. I also like Misery quite a bit. Still have never seen Shawshank Redemption though [adobe4578]
I liked the shining also and his new book Point Dumas. I am a great fan of Stephen King's books and have read most of them. I liked some of his movies but not all of them. [Hatley]
I too have been a Stephen King fan for years. He is a wonderful writter.Did you know that he has done a small part in almost every movie that is based on his books? [dfollin]
I prefer his collections of short stories. Movies based off of his books are hit and miss with most being misses. His novels are too long-winded and dull, but in short story form he hits the right points usually and entertains. [ArsonCuff]
I like books by Stephen King, I think they are well written and quite stimulating, I even remember losing the langoliers, I left it in a cab, because I was planning to bring it to work and read during my break, I was so keen on finishing the book. But with the movies, I'm quite disappointed, specially with firestarter, wasnt how I imagined it to be. And to think firestarter was my first King novel. [gamgee]
The Shining is an awesome movie. There hasn't been anything lately that could ever top that. I also like watching Pet Cemetary. The whole meaning of that story haunts me and it's really depressing. I also like the movie Storm of The Century. To me, that is the creepiest story of his. And personally, I'd rather watch the movies more often than reading the books. [Xdrowninghavocx]
I used to read all his books, then he started putting out lots of them and they weren't that good. I don't have an opinion about his latest books, I haven't read them. One of my favorites was "IT", that book was awesome, I liked the "Shining" too. [Polly1]
I really enjoyed it too because some of my favorite actors made that movie. There was Richard Thomas, who was John "Boy" Walton in the show "The Waltons" I watched as a child. And the late, great John Ritter. He was in shows and movies that were my favorites. He was one of my favorite people. When he passed away I was shocked and upset. And I just knew him from tv,can you imagine how his family and friends felt. [dfollin]
You know what's funny is that I like Stephen King as an author, but I haven't really read any of his novels. The only Stephen King I have read is his book about writing (which is something of an autobiography) and the articles that he sometimes writes for the last page of Entertainment Weekly. (I actually started subscribing to Entertainment Weekly for the Stephen King articles, after sitting in a tire shop and reading through a stack of the magazines with his articles at the end. Good stuff!) [highlyclever]
Someday I'll have to pick up one of his novels, although I may be a little too squeamish for following his genre; perhaps something that he has written under a pseudonym in a different genre? The ew article is great, but I had to find it using google. What I like best is reading writers writing about writing, and in this article, that's what Stephen King certainly does - thoroughly enjoyable. [highlyclever]
I love the movie, Christine. It is about an old car that is a classic. It is in a junk yard and a young guy wants it to restore it and drive. the car is actually haunted and takes many lives. I don't like to read, so I have never read the book about it. You would have to see this movie. It is very scary. Children of the Corn is scary also. [stephcjh]
I have heard a lot of movies and books from stephen king. But i have only read one of them: Tommyknockers. It's a bit of a science-fiction story, with aliens playing with people's body. And those who aren't affected are the one with body defficiencies. The protagonist has a metal plate on his head he got coming out of an accident. But I noticed that the ending is anti-climatic, unlike other novels which have good endings. [richiem]
i LOVE stephen king books. he is such a good writer. reading his books never fail to get my heart racing. it would be really hard to pick a favourite. however, i do like the series better. my all time favourite would have to be the 'dark tower' series. green mile is also another personal favourite. like you, children of the corn really give me the creeps. as in i feel so much more disturbed after reading compared to the rest. [applefreak]
Good subject. My favorite goes way back. I liked Christine about the possessed car and its teenage owner who also bacame possessed. I no longer read Stephen King for reasons I mught start on a different post some day. [muscles4me]
Hello dfollin. The movies by Stephen King I like best are probably tied between "Cujo" and "The Shining". Jack Nicholson just scared the you-know-what out of me, as did that slobbering dog, Cujo. Hmm, it's been quite some time since I've read anything by Stephen King and I haven't read any of his newer stuff. I think "Christine" is probably my favorite book by him. That car just seemed to take on a character of its own, it was creepy. It is difficult to compare books and movies because I usually read the book first. Then, I'm disappointed that the movie didn't include all the characters and scenarios. So, I tend to like the movies best. PearlGrace [PearlGrace]
I really am not your typical Stephen King fan. That is to say, his books are not my usual choice of reading material. I have read a few of his books, and loved them all. Those included, The Stand (long but fabulous), Misery, The Green Mile, Bag of Bones, and Dolores Claiborne. They are very good books and, of course, you gotta love The Shining! [fiona08]
Stephen King is my absolute favorite author! The first I read was "Pet Cemetery" and it was much better than the movie! The first movie I saw of his was "The Shining" I saw it in the theater (I know I'm dating myself) and I was absolutely terrified! Its really not possible for me to pick a favorite, especially after reading all the responses, and being reminded of how many there are-and I love them all, and read quite a few of them, saw ALL the movies. PS....on my profile the only photo I have so far is a picture of two of my kids in front of his house. We went to Bangor, Maine in March to check out a college for my daughter. You can't see too much of the house itself, but the gate they're in front of has a spider web and bat design on it! [jungletime]
My favorite Stephen King book is "Salem's Lot." The movie was just lousy to me. I can't (or don't want to) even remember who was in it. I prefer the books much better, because most of the time to me, the movie just doesn't do the book justice. Especially, a somewhat pyschological/vampire thiller, without coming off as silly. I have been a fan since "Salem's Lot, and have since read and seen of movies of: It, Carrie, Cujo and The Shining, to name a few. [ReoTwo]
I have read a few of Stephen King's novels. They are almost always superior to the movie versions. Much of King's writing is psychological. We get to "hear" what the characters are thinking. This narrative device is often omitted onscreen. Also, King tends to be very verbose. The movies often cut out plot points to make the length of the movie reasonable so the public will sit through it. That's also why many of his books have been adapted into TV mini-series instead of feature length movies. [jtfmulder]
Stephen King novels I like: The Shining, The Stand, The Dead Zone, and Firestarter. Stephen King movies I like: The Shining, The Shining (TV mini-series), The Dead Zone, Creepshow, Stand By Me. [jtfmulder]
i like ROSE RED... even its too long! i like stephen king movies... [sheilamaye]
