When Choosing A Movie To Watch, Do You Go By The Reviews Of Movie Critics

Is there anyone that solely watches movies based on the reviews of movie critics? Do you agree with everything they say about each particular movie? Most of the time I will go see a movie without reading any reviews. If the previews look good and there are actors or actresses that I like, I will go see it no matter what. Sometimes I will go with what critics say but mainly if they all say the movie is really, really bad. I think that movie critics like different types of movies than I do so I do not go by their opinions very much. How do you feel about that?

responses and comments:

i don't go by what anyone says. unless maybe its someone who has the same taste in movies that i do. there have been a lot of movies that i liked that everyone else hated. so i just go by my own judgement if the previews looked good. [ravinskye]
I try not to listen to the critics, mainly since they like different types of movies and have disagreed with many of their opinions. If I like the actors and the previews and what the movie is about, I will go see it. [kgwat70]

I don't always pay attention to what the critics say. I usually base a movie on who the actors are and what the story is about. That will determine if I go see it or not. [daycarepal]
There have been times where I actually agreed with the critics when a movie sucked or was really good but not many. I liked many movies that they did not like or gave a so so rating. [kgwat70]

There are movies and there are movies. Some movies I will watch no matter what either because I think I will like the story or I like the characters. Otherwise will be a maybe. If the critics really slam it down hard, I may just pass on it. [lordwarwizard]

I go by the movie previews of the movies and the actors and/or actresses that are in it. I never go by the movie critics, I just go what I think will be good. And usually I am right. I could care less what the movie critics say. lol Like you said everyone has a different opinion on things and likes and dislikes so not everyone is going to like or dislike the same movie. [Penguinsangel]

I don't pay any attention to what the movie critics have to say everyone has there own opinions of what they like so how can someone judge a movie for everyone else one person might love the movie while another hates it. I just go by if the movie looks interesting to me. [hip2bemom]

I watch a lots of movies and i usually don't care much about those critics but which one is the latest and animations i like a lot, never miss any of them. I heard a lot before da vanci code was released but i don't care what the critics were and just watched it. [healer]

I look at reviews sometimes, but it's usually movies I didn't know if I really wanted to see or not. When I read reviews, I tend to prejudge the movie and I'm looking for the negative things I read about, so it's best I don't and go with a clear head. [Flight84]

I don't exactly the information of anybody or critics about a movie when I go watch it.. That's the trill for me, not knowing all about it.. It should always be in your surprise once Im are alredy watching every scenes of it.. I think it's not necessary for me to here any comments from anybody if I haven't watch the movie yet because I know that after I have watch it I can Judge it on my own.. [JBrulez]

Critics are never accurate in my mind. I also don't bother listening to anyones opinion on movies beyond my brothers. He is the only person who can say a movie is good and I'll believe him or it sucks and I'll know not to see it. Otherwise I never bother to listen to reviews or read reviews because I just think they're full of crap. I always wonder how people become idiotic movie critics anyway. [raychill]

I don't like reading reviews..I think they put make us predisposed to not like or like a movie. I rather go and see the movie and make my own judgement about the movie. [littlefranciscan]

I will choose a movie not only based on the reviews. I will ask my friends and relatives who had watched it. I will also watch their advertisement and make decision whether it is worthwhile to watch or not. If I am not sure about the quality, but the press is so hot about it, I will still go and watch. [ladysurvivor]

That always varies with the movie. Most of the movies ,I just try to look at the review from different source, not just one, before deciding to watch the movies. Some special movies from some special directors, I dont look at the reviews. I will just go to the theatres to watch their movies. [senthil2k]

I usually read the reviews but I don't see on that I see a movie by what my friend have said about it. I buy movies though I would rather wait a few months or a year if have to be and then if I have heard nothing but good about the movie I will buy it. That way I can watch it several times and pick it apart. You know when they have like guns in a western that was supposed to be in the 1800's and then gun wasn't made till the 1900's. That is what I mean by picking it apart. [bwrattybaby]

Well not necesarilly, I always consider the actors, the story, sometimes the critics does not picture it through the common people's eyes,.. [ucancallmedissy]

I dont go by the reviews...mostly i m attracted to watch a movie just because i like its trailer...and i also look out for the cast in the movie..i dont think that critics are always right..i have seen many movies which are awsome and critics just dont do justice to them...i really do think that one must not go by the critics if his/her taste dont match with the critics.... [rijashere]

I don't usually go by what a movie critic says. My husband on the other hand does, or at least he has. We used to go to rent movies together and it would drive me crazy how he wouldn't go by what the plot was about but rather by what the critic said. How would I know this? Because I would ask him what the movie is about and he would say "I don't know, but look at all of these reviews!" LOL And the majority of the time these movies sucked! Oh well, we haven't rented a movie in a while and when we do my husband usually goes alone. LOL [sacmom]

No. Usually we go by the commercials we have seen. Like, if they look like a good movie and by what others who have seen the movie say about it. The critics aren't always right. [jbb316]

Nah, I never do after all, people tend to have their own opinions and it never really gives a realistic representation of the movie. What somebody else might like, you might hate, or what someone hates, you might enjoy and there may be some in between. Nowdays I just watch a movie if it seems interesting, end of story, regardless of ratings or reviews. [8ctavarium]

no i do not choose a movie by looking over critics... i just go to see the movie that i planed to see... if the critics did not like it that does not necessary mean that you will not like it, [alnilam]

I just don't go by reviews, be it by movie critics or friends, I usually go by my own choice. The choice of movies is quite subjective. There was a time when I used to watch any type of movies but now I don't watch much. [metrobelle]

I go by the opinions of others that have seen the movies. I never listen to professional movie critics. my friends are excellent critics and have not once steered me wrong. [sid556]
haha! i do that, too. i try to ask for opinions from people i know regarding a certain film. and sometimes, i base my decisions on what they say. anne [maryannemax]

I don't read the previews at all . Everyone's opinion is different and i am not gonna decide not to see a movie just because someone else said it was bad. [66jerseygirl]

there are lots of movies in DVDs here at home now and most of them, i haven't heard anything about. so, what i do is i check about the film on the internet before loading it. i just read about the film's story and not the reviews. i only want to have some background regarding the film. also, i love to see the trailers if possible before watching a movie as a whole. anne [maryannemax]

Like you, I just go to a movie if its trailer looks interesting, or if its a sequel to a favourite of mine. [herbalicious]

Yeah, that's the same with me. If there is some movie that i have made my mind to watch, i just go for it . There are some movies whose trailors are quite appealing and compel me to watch them. If there is some movie that i thought won't be that good but if the review is good, i do watch them. Sometimes, i like them and sometimes they are just so boring. So, it's not pretty sure with me ... [mallick]

I ignore the critics. I have a theory that they are all frustrated people any way and they vent they use their power to bash a movie just so they feel like they have some kind of control over the movie-goer. I go to the movies with no expectations and if I like it, then there's a good chance that some critic somewhere probably hated it. [wachit14]

No, absolutely not. I base my decision to see a movie on whether the basic plot appeals to me. I look up information about the movies, get info about the story, see as many previews as I can. Too many times have I gone to a movie that the critics (and everyone else) hated and absolutely loved it. There have also been a few that everyone loved (Blair Witch Project, for example) that I just could not stand. I wasn't really interested in it to begin with, but a friend convinced me to see it. I was bored senseless. [wiccania]

Some of the best movies I ever saw the critics hated! So I usually go with my own taste in movies, not theirs. Some movies the critics thought were just wonderful, I didn't like at all. So I think you are so right that it is a personal taste. Don't you think the critics are sometimes so deep in their opinions that you wonder if they were watching a different movie than you? [breelee2007]

Well the only critics I listen to is ebert and roper I usally agree with them on most movies and sometimes for a lot of movies I wont go see it if they rated it bad like chuck and larry they said it was horrble and I wont go see it now just wait for it to come out on dvd but for other movies like the simpsons if they say its a bad movie im still going to see it because ive been waiting two years. [arcidy]

well i do look at the review if they have a rating system but otherwise i watch a movie that i feel like watching [ayushthedevil]

I go by the previews that I see on TV and if I like the movie base on that, then I go to see it and so far I haven't been disappointed using this method. [Lydia1901]

I read critics after seeing a movie sometimes, but not refer to a 'guide' I choose one according to the story and my interest, I stick to my opinion and don't want other people to decide for me which one is good. [sadtomato]

no.. movie critics doesn't have any idea about what interests me and whatnot.. I go by the review of my bestfriend.. if he enjoyed it,, chances are... my money won't surely go to waste [xtin3810]

I have never taken any notice of what reviews and critics say as they tend to be very different from my own opinions. After watching films for a number of years I know what I like and what I am most likely to enjoy watching. I agree with you and have often seen movies based on who is starring in the film when they are actors that are worth seeing do what they do best. [yorkshirewriter]

I don't much care about reviews. Though sometimes I will go read reviews that rate something as low as possible just so that when I get there the only thing that can happen is it exceeds my expectations. Works for a lot of other things too but hey, I don't really care what a couple old guys have to say about a movie. (I'm thinking Siskel, Ebert, whatever the new guys name is and whichever one of them isn't dead yet...) Sometimes though I will go see something based entirely upon something someone I know said. That's different in my mind though. This isn't a couple of people whom I haven't and never will meet. I'm talking about someone I know who has tastes that run markedly similar to mine saying hey I just saw 'Blah' you should see it, you'd probably like it' That aside I usually base my choices on what looks and sounds interesting. There's no real draw for me to see something just for the actors as I'm not deluded enough to believe that just because so and so is in it I'll like it. But hey if I think it sounds interesting AND someone I've actually heard of is in it, I'm there. Sadly that doesn't happen much since pretty much anyone I've heard of is usually old and retired. -_-; [Arkadus]
