My husband and I got a free movie pass that would have been used to go to see The Changeling, but I do not know if we will go to see it now. You see, someone here on mylot, gave away the whole plot, what happened in the end, and the conclusion so all the fun was taken out of it and it was done in great detail. Now the only other movie that we might see is that new James Bond movie. The fact is I just want the highlights from the movie, is it a happy ending? Who stars in it? What type of movie, not the whole thing done for those who will be unable to see it, either two years down the road when it gets on Tv, or will be unable to get it in the rental.
So I was wondering whether someone's detailed description of a movie, without the warning "Spoilers' made it so that now why bother to see the movie now since they already told you about it?
[question posted by suspenseful]
responses and comments:
That drives me nuts when people do that. I will not rent or go to see a movie if I already know what is going to happen it it. [stephcjh]
I always thought it was funny when I saw those old Tv shows when the guy in front was talking about what was going to happen and you saw the hero and his girl squirm. But when it happens to you, it is very annoying. [suspenseful]
that drive me crazy telling the movie while iam setting in the movie i hate that why did i pay to go if they are going to tell the movie that sucks.and i hate people who are just talking about other things in the movie distrubing everyone else.and i hate when they put their foots on the chairs and you trying to see the movie all you see is their toes sticking up. and not to mention walking back forward while you trying to watch the movie. [annjilena]
Oh I hate that to, do not how anyone can put their toes up because there is not much room and they cannot even get their feet up. But what I really hate besides the interruptions is those tall people who sit in front of you, and you have to move your head side to side to see the show and then they always come in late when the good part is showing. Yes, we rented the dvd and saw it at home again, but it is not the same thing. [suspenseful]
AAaAAaahhh!!! One time I was at the movie theater, I think I was watching "Shrek 2" -for the fourth time, my sister was obsessed with it!- but anyways, there was this girl in front of me and she spent the WHOLE movie saying "now THIS is gonna happen, and then that... Wait, he's gonna do this or that" and that kinda stuff. I was so mad at her, I had to get out of there and go to the bathroom or something before I'd lose my mind. If you already know the movie from head to toe, cant you at least let the other people enjoy it? Happy MyLotting and have a nice day! Xp [Haylie2610]
Why spoil it for anyone else. I did see the movie, we rented it and we loved it, but it really hurt that this lady told what was going to happen and the outcome, so even though it was a true story,it happened decades before my time, and it was a local story so that unless you lived there, you would not have heard of it. [suspenseful]
First, if I had free tickets to see a movie, I would use them. If I decided not to, I'd find someone who would appreciate going. Secondly, I feel that while you're reading a report about a movie you might want to see, you'd stop reading as soon as you learned it was going to tell you too much. I would stop reading at that point. However, it probably would be a good night out for you and your husband suspensful. Go and enjoy yourselves. [mipen2006]
Well it was someone here in myLot who gave out the whole scene, told all her friends who read it what the movie was about, who died, who might be dead, whether the lady found her son, whether she still hoped that he was alive, etc. So in essence, even though we did see the movie on dvd, it was a let down that we knew what was going to happen so I could not get as emotional or have that "what is going to happen next?" feeling that is what a watching a movie is all about. But the movie was so wonderful, I think maybe if I get enough money I will buy it or hope someone gives it to us for a Christmas or birthday present. [suspenseful]
It gets me pretty upset because after you hear the spoilers and you go and watch the movie, it kinda takes all the fun out of the movie. This situation can also apply to books because I also hate when someone just blurts the end of a book or what happens in the book. It gets really annoying especially when the person does it on purpose just to screw ( referring to my friends here). [gboykey]
What bugged me was that someone here on myLot told how she enjoyed seeing The Changling, and instead of saying it was based on a true story, that it was about a woman who got the wrong boy back, went and said who was the woman, who had taken the boy, what type of person he was, etc. what happened to her, etc. without leaving us to think that maybe Frank Nitti had found the boy and he was now a member of the mob, whether he was dead, whether he had been found by a farming couple and was on his way to California, whether the police would find the boy at the end, whether years later, he would knock on her door and say, "mother!" etc. Instead she practically gave away the whole plot. [suspenseful]
I really hate it when someone tell me the movie plot if I haven't watch the movie yet especially when I am planning to watch the movie. It is so irritating because all the joy and excitement to watch the movie will be gone. [liquorcs]
I do not like it one bit. I do not mind when they give the general plot like what they give in the previes, but when they tell what happens at the end, and the conclusion, other then it is very sad, or very happy (cause I would have assumed that the lady looking for her son died before he could see her, or very happy that they were united.) but this member gave the whole plot away from the beginning to the end and the one I wanted to know about (the attempted escapes) she was silent about. [suspenseful]
It would depend on how badly I wanted to see the movie in the first place or how interesting it sounded. Yes, maybe the initial thrill of it was spoiled, but since I will watch a good movie over and over again, I don't see it as much different than that. Was the discussion in an interest devoted to that movie? If so, then I supposed you could expect there to be discussions about the plot and what happened in the end. It would be hard to have a discussion about a movie without putting things in it about what happened in the movie. At the same time, there would be some point at which you would realize this was what the discussion was about so you would not have to continue reading it if you didn't want to know the rest. The Spoiler discussions I don't like are the ones that give too much spoiler info in the first line or two so that you can't avoid it even if you try to scan past it quickly. Leave the spoiler info further down in the discussion post so it doesn't show to those who don't want to see it. This happens too much on some of the TV show spoilers. I don't know really though how a discussion about a movie could have spoiler as part of the heading since that discussion is about that movie. I would think most people following that discussion would have seen the movie first so they would have something to talk about. [capirani]
If she had said "Spoiler!" if you do not want to know about the ending, do not read this discussion," but she did not. I think you are giving her excuses as if she did not realize what she was doing. I do not mind getting a general plot that she searched for her son, was tricked, and he may be alive but she does not know and I would have assumed that this was about partly through the movie. And she put it in such a way that the ending was obvious. She could have left out the part after the boys tried to escape the psycho killer and let us guess, but she did not. I mean I have seen the previews and previews are supposed to make you guess wrong. When I saw the Dvd, the ending was exactly what she said. YOu are supposed to keep some parts secret, and she did not. The trouble is that all I wanted to know, was it going to be a sad or a happy ending or draw your own conclusions. [suspenseful]
if I have been eager to watch this movie and I have had a high expectation of the movie,I would like to watch it still.otherwise,I wouldn't watch it. [scyzyyyy]
It was a good movie. We rented it on DVd and loved it, but we knew what would happen next and it toned down the suspense. I sort of love the suspense. [suspenseful]
I know the feeling. I hate it when that happens. I'd still watch the movie if it's a really good movie that I really wanted to watch. When I write about a movie here on myLot, I make sure that I put a spoiler warning so that anyone who'd read the post would know that there are spoilers and that they should stop reading if they haven't seen the movie yet. I guess the only thing we can do is rate them down and maybe send a report. [migsmartinez]
That would be a good idea. She did not even give a warning. She just rambled on how much she enjoyed this movie Changling by Angela Jolie and since she loved the actress so much, just rambled. I could have done the same thing about a movie years ago by Gregory Peck , but i would not do that as he was one of my favorite actors. The trouble is if you like a certain actor, you forget and start giving away plots, etc. [suspenseful]
No that doesn't bother me I always want to see it for myself. Even when I know whats going to happen if the movie is good, I am still into it. [nikkilu]
It was a good movie, but one thing I love about a movie is the suspense and what is going to happen. I want to be able to cry and then when I find that the hero did not die, smile with relief. I have been to movies where I thought the child had died or had been killed, and then later on, was so happy that the child was alive. [suspenseful]
If have konwn everything what will happen in the movie, why go to watch it. So i hate the person talking about the movie when i am watching. [scraperfly]
Oh and I also hate when someone writes here what happened at the end, and then have someone else get mad at me because i wanted to see if the movie was worth while going to. I do not need to know the ending. I just want to know the general plot but not the whole show. I would have been different if a new movie was made about a Dickens or Mary Higgins Clark or a popular novel everyone had read, and they said "well in the book you know that Cecilia runs a bookstore, but in the movie she also does charity work," etc. or "they could not put the two sisters in like they did in the book, because the movie only runs 2 hrs." But this was about an incident that no one would know except the police department in that particular city and the social services, and the ones really involved are dead anyway. [suspenseful]
i do get your point but if tttttthe movie hass my favourite stars in it.,i will still go for it. happy mylotting. [riyasam]
I am more interested in the story. I love mysteries and also true stories especially if they are about the 2nd World War, or someone who escaped Communism, the Nazis, or other evil dictatorships. Besides even though I have my favorite actors, there are probably some movies that they have been in, that when someone says "Isn't that===?" they put on a disguise and pretend that they are not them because they were embarrassed to ever be in that movie. [suspenseful]
Well, if I want to watch a movie of course I won't asked someone to tell me something about the movie because there's a possibility that she/he may tell me the whole story.. I will know it by my own so that I won't feel bad or disappointed.. Maybe, I'll asked some question like if the movie is worthy to watch.. But I won't ask him/her to tell me the whole story... happy [kissie34]
The trouble was that I did not ask this person about the movie. She wrote the discussion and asked if anyone had seen the movie Changling starring Angela Jolie and of course, I went to the discussion and expected her to say it was about a missing boy and his mother's efforts t find him, that there is a murderer in it, it was based on a true incident, and it also stars, etc. etc. and that would have satisfied me. But she went on in the discussion to give not only the synpnosis of the movie but the ending, etc. who was was, and what would going to happen. [suspenseful]
So what? How is that any different than those that read the book and then still go see the movie? Same idea. I have seen a movie on DVD that I saw in the movie theatre, it did not make it better or worse. And "knowing" about it is NOT the same as seeing it. [Barbietre]
Look I have read a book and gone to the movie and anyone with any sense knows that there is more detail in a book that they cannot show in a 90 minute to 2 hour movie and even in a mini series, they will leave out certain parts because it may be too graphic. I am not talking about that. I am talking about someone telling everyone who read her discussion what the ending was, what happened to the boy, that he may have been killed, or he may have been dead. She told us enough so that we would not have bothered to see the movie. It was not based on a book. If she had said it was based on a true story written by -----, then all we needed to do was to read the book and unless you live in Hogwarth or are a wizard, that book would not come with scenes that are acted up realistically. And it was a true story. Most people with any sense would know that when you tell people about a movie, you do not give away the ending. [suspenseful]
I hate it when you are watching a movie and someone spoils it. They brag on about what happens because they have already seen it, mimick the lines said in the film. It is really annoying and frustrating. Depending on how much they give away, i will probably watch the movie. For e.g. Vantage Point, i think it is a really good movie, luckily no one spoiled it for me so it was really good, it keeps you in suspense, if someone were to spoil it for me or mimick the lines, give me blatant hints and clues, that would kill the movie. I advise people not to read a movie critique, just look at the rating the give, do not be tempted to look at snaps and shots online over the internet and read previews on it. I also advise people not to watch a movie that is bad quality online as you are spoiling it for yourself with extremely bad sound and quality. [itrungs]
I watched Vantage Point and the only ones that spoiled it for me was a woman and her teenaged son who walked in the theater half way through the movie and at one of the crucial points of the scene. We did rent it on DVD,and even though we have Wide screen and HDTV, it was not the same as seeing it at the theater. But I hate it when someone tells what is going to happen at the movies, or here on myLot, not the what is going to happen next, but what happened at the end. That is the point of going to the movie, to see if what is happening at the end is the same as what you thought would happen. And you know what, I have gotten it wrong. When the movie makers have these previews, they give you the opinion that the father killed the whole family, the little girl drowned, when in the first case, the father heard about the family getting murdered and is overcome with righteous anger, and the little girl drowned is a dream the iittle girl had when her doll fell in the river. ===Just giving an examples of potential movies. Previews whet your appetite for a movie. [suspenseful]
yeah well they cant really describe how awesome it was or can they? even thogh sometimes this is a joke.. they do manage to ruin the fun but i watch it anyways [thecrazyjogger]
Well she gave away the ending and that is what hurt it for me. We rented the movie and loved it very much, but I would have liked it more if it had remained a mystery until we saw the ending ourselves. I mean it was a true story and very tragic at that. What that woman went through because no one except that preacher and only a few would believe her no one should have. [suspenseful]
oh my god that is so irritating...when some one comes to you and tells you everythign about a movie you want to see very badly.... i feel like wringing that persons neck and putting him up for drying int eh sun..... especially a suspence or a horror flick that you want to see and a friend tells you whats going to happen in the climax that makes me oh so mad..... i have many instances like these...there was a time when a movie had come out and it was a horror flick and my friend had already told me everything in that movie but i still decided to go and watch it and to my amazement nothing what he had said actually happened... so the next day i went up to him and asked him why he had played that prank on me and he actually told me that he did not like the movie and so did not want me to go and watch it ..... some excuse that was !! [shonali]
She did not talk to me personally, but she was on myLot and of course, started the discussion if anyone had seen Changling. I expected her to see it was based on a true story, etc. but not to read the whole plot and the conclusiion. And she did not even say "if you are on my friend's list and cannot see the movie, just pm me if you cannot wait for the dvd." Anyone who read her discussion knew exactly what would happen. [suspenseful]
I actually go watch a movie if the reviews say it's good so if someone tells me the whole story, it does spoil it but I will still go watch it of course then it also depends on who the actors are, what is it about and other things that make me curious about the movie in the first place [LittleMel]
I will see the movie if it is good, but I would rather not know the ending. I really do not care about the actor unless the actor has a good reputation that he or she can really make one believe they are the actual person in the story. I also love mysteries, especially if they are true events. We did rent the movie and it was quite good. We might even had bought it or got it as a gift, but since my husband got als I have not been checking our dvd collection that much. [suspenseful]
If I am going to see a film that I'm not sure about then I like to know what is going to happen as then I can decide if I really want to see it or not. I don't want to waste my money [Anne18]
I do not think you would want a line by line description or not what is going to happen in the end, and all the scenes in the movie. I can understand if you bought a book and you wanted to see if the movie adhered to the book, but surely you would not want someone to tell what happened at the conclusion or the most important parts. That is what she did. [suspenseful]
I agree. I think warning should be given. I like a rough outline and whether the ending of good or not but I do not want to know the whole story. [whiteheather39]
We have to know enough to see if the movie is worth watching, but there are somethings we do not want to know and want to find out for ourselves. If it was not a good movie and recommended, we would not have watched it. I mean don't the previews that we see on the movie screen, on the net, or on Tv, enough to give us the information and do not the reviewers give enough info. for us to make up our minds? [suspenseful]
I think that if someone is going to tell all, they should warn you in the very beginning..And if I were you and saw a discussion like that and as I was reading, realized they were spoiling it for those who have not seen it, I would stop reading right away.. [carmelanirel]
If it's a movie I really want to see then I'll still go see it. I think we all bring our own experiences into what we watch. I also enjoy watching good quality acting and I think Jolie is usually pretty good. But, I'm also one that will watch the same movie a million times and love it every time. [reinydawn]
I hate it also when people do that. I cannot lie I do it too but only when someone does it to me Lol. but yea I hate that. [Sistahgyrl]
Still would have to go see for myself more exciting some how to watch for the parts. [Lakota12]
i hate it when people do that.it ruins it for you big time.i know a few people that do that and my daughter is one of the worst so now when we get a new film me and my partner sit and watch it before her so we can enjoy it. i hope you find a film to watch that no one has spoiled for you [daceyp]
I agree on that. It would be like watching a movie you've already seen before, already knowing what's gonna happen next. That really bothers me when certain people do that to me, and they actually tell you all about the movie while you're watching it. Why would I want to know what's gonna happen next before it happens. I told this person "If I wanted to know what happens next I would just turn the movie OFF and ask you to spill all the beans and tell the whole movie." Note: This person don't do this anymore. He knows how much I hate it. [miraclefreebies]
I wish someone had warned me about the ending of the movie JCVD. In case you don't know what the initials represent, it's Jean-Claude Van Damme. I heard a glowing review of this movie by a local reviewer on the radio. He was entranced with the film, thought it was high art, etc. So based on this, my hubby and I got sucked in and went to see it. One of the worst movies I've seen recently. The ending made absolutely no sense at all. If anyone saw it and understood it, please explain why Jean-Claude was arrested as a bank robber?? [PlantBuddy]
yay! i hate it when it happens! i won't bother to watch the movie when someone already told me the details of the movie.. [gracie04]
I hate that when it happens. I still go see the movie, but it takes all the suspense out, when you know what is going to happen. Movies are more enjoyable when you see it the first time, and know nothing before watching it. The name is BOND, James BOND. Now where is the popcorn? lol [SuzyQ12]
thats what happened to me with a few movies gone baby gone and the strangers my sister told me the ending of the strangers and some stupid guy told me the ending of gone baby gone when i was at blockbuster [goat6boy]
Everyone conclusion about a movie is not always the same. I would encourage you to go and watch the movie. Some times even when you watch a movie on doing it the second time you will see things that you don't remember seeing when it was watched the first time. Don't watch what was display here in MYLOT go and enjoy yourself. [kerriannc]
Oh I watched the movie. We got it on Dvd, and the ending was exactly what she said it was. If she stopped at the escape, then we could have found out ourselves or if we thought the boy who had been the changeling was in cahoots with the killer and was to keep parents for looking for their missing sons, I would have assumed that and been relieved that it was not so, but she told everything. [suspenseful]
i would still go and watch it because I love the extra large soda and gigantic pop corn...i am thinking again of overspending [bcl_me]
We saw the movie on Dvd and loved it. It was the type where it was based on a true story and if she had given part of the plot or if there had been a news story such as young man weeps over mother;s grave and we learn that he was searching for her while she was looking for him and they decided to make a movie of her search, then I would not mind. My husband got a book on audible about a Jewish resistance group and I heard the whole plot on iPOD, but I got him the movie because we wonder how different the movie is from the actual book. But this was the actual whole plot including the conclusion. [suspenseful]
I maybe the only odd ball that actually wants to know or doesn't mind being told the entire plot or movie, before going to watch it. If I really enjoy the description, it makes me want to hurry to see a particular movie now. I don't usually go to the theater anymore. But if it is out on DVD, I'll probably wait to get out to get it. You see I receive free DVD rental codes every Monday, so I usually watch at least 8 to 10 new movies I haven't seen before. [hdjohnson]
Most people do not want to know the whole plot or at least the part that matters. We want to read the previews and make the wrong conclusions and then go to the movie and see that we were entirely wrong. We did watch the movie on Dvd, as it was based on a true story or was a true story but it did not happen in my city so I had no where to find out about it. I might get it on bluray, as I do have a couple of gift cards, because it was really that good. [suspenseful]
Well sure if someone tells you the entire plot of the movie plus the ending,it kiis the movie for you..I have told others about a movie i saw,and i would tell them ,maybe who starred in it and some basic things but never give out the full details and the plot and ending....Most people know better than to do such a thing. It kills the movie to do that....Some people act so goofy sometimes..I am sorry they likked it for you.. [slickcut]
Ps: meant to say sorry they killed the movie for you! [slickcut]
I will still watch the movie because I am one that is asking all about a movie before I watch it. I like knowing what happens most times. So I won't miss it. I would still go you never know making even though it was in great detail maybe some details were missed and will make a nice surprise. [mtdewgurl74]
Well I did not ask about the movie. I just went to the interest watching movies here and found someone had started a discussion to find out if anyone had gone to see the new movie Changeling starring Angela Jolie. Of course, thinking it was a fantasy where Angela played a woman whose child was switched by fairies, I read the discussion and found the writer had given away the ending. I mean I am not stupid enough to go to someone and say tell me the whole plot of the movie and if I did, they would always leave out the ending or tell me to go see it myself or say "they will have it on dvds in a year's time.'" [suspenseful]
To me,it depends.Like twilight,I have read the novel before the movie was on.But I still wanna go to the cinema to see this movie. If you like this movie, you won't care about whether you have known the end or not.You can experience the atmophere there. And I always think it's much different to see a movie at home and in a moviehouse. And it's much different either to see a movie or read its book.Even if you have known the end,you are still curious about how they educe it.But if you dont like the movie,I think you even don't consider to watch it. [freda529]
Well I have read books and have gone to see the movie, and I knew quite well that unless it was a Tv mini-series that ran for six to eight hours, the book and the movie were not the same. You would need to have for instance part one for two hours, part two for two hours more and show the whole book. I mean my husband has the whole Harry Potter series and he was able to point out what they had missed in the movies. But this mylotter told everything in the movie so that we knew what happened to the boy or what was assumed. (He might have gotten away, but maybe not.) so there was no mystery. She did not say she read the book The Changeling or the book on which The Changeling was based and gave us the name of the book so we cold go to our bookstore or local library, read it, and compare it to the movie. What she did was tell the most important parts and took away our curiosity. [suspenseful]
Not only would I be p*ssed if it were a film I was looking forward to seeing, it would end our friendship. All I need to know about the film is the title and a small , and I mean small part of the plot.In fact most trailers, especially the ones you see in the theater, are too long.In return, if I have seen a film you wanted to see, I will tell you how good or bad it was but I would Never, never give away plot.I would just make a date to either take you to see the film or wait until you have seen it and then we can discuss it. [sarahruthbeth22]
I do the same thing. once i Know what genre you like and don't like. I will warn you about a film. [sarahruthbeth22]
I really don't like it when people do that. Especially if it's a movie that I want to see the movie. It really drives me nuts! [dodo19]
Just give me the basic plot, but do not give the ending away. That is what she did. I mean it would have been classified as a true crime story if it had been made a different way. And it was as if the story was in Times or Newsweek or a paper most people could see on line and she had said "did you know they are making a movie about that skeleton they found in ---" or "the great grand father of so and so who wanted to find out about -- great great grand mother?" or something like that. [suspenseful]
Personally, I would still go see it. Other people's retelling of the movie is not the same as seeing the movie for yourself. It's a very different experience. Second, you mentioned that someone on mylot gave it away. I'm assuming this was in a discussion, which makes me wonder why you would read it if you didn't want to spoil the ending? Anyway, you shouldn't let someone else's giveaway keep you from seeing a movie that you could end up falling in love with. Give it a chance. [AdTe23]
Well I assumed that that person would write it the way you and I would write it that they would tell a little what was happening - it was about a woman whose son was missing, her search for him, and that a boy who pretended to be her son but both boys did not look alike, there is a murderer involved, but I will not give that away and it is about a true incident that happened in California in the 1920s. I mean you should not blame me, for assuming that when i read the discussion, that the person on the other end would do the same. So if you were praising a movie, would you give away the ending? I think not. [suspenseful]
Sometimes, the way in which people convey us the movie script makes us very eagre to watch the movie. I prefer to get review of my friends who has seen the movie before so that I avoid watching flop movies. It saves on Money too! [murtuza89]
But do your friends give away the whole plot and the ending of the movie as well? I can understand if they said the actress acted like a wooden fish or the costumes were not 1920s but 2000s. And they had tv when there was no tv at that time and that would give an idea that the writer and producer had no idea what they were doing or it only got one star, but this mylotter went to the movie and wrote what was going to happen, what happened to the boy, etc. so that when we did see the movie, I knew exactly what happened. I did not need even to watch the movie. [suspenseful]
I just usuakky like to know the genre of the movie, and if it's is worth seeing. Any more spoils it for me. I really don't care who the stars are. [mipen2006]
It's so annoying when someone tells you what happens in a movie before it actually happens. My little, 7 year old sister is like this. I don't mind, though, because most of the movies she tells me about are not ones that I intended on watching with anyone but her. I was watching "Bridge to Terebithia" with her probably about a year ago (she had seen it before - I had not!) and she totally ended up giving away the ending (which I won't spoil for you all here- so as to not be a hypocrit). But it's really sad, and involves someone dying! (Won't tell you who though!). I actually started getting into the movie, though, so I was a bit upset with her for telling me that. But she doesn't know better. lol. Now maybe your husband on the other hand..Should know better by now. lol. I think some people just get so excited to tell you about what happens (when they see the movie before you), that they just forget that it's a totally rude thing to do - and spoils the movie & ending for you. [maezee]
I totally agree with you, if someone says me the whole story then I make my mind for not watching the movie in the hall. I prefer watching movies in home rather than cinemas. So, it does not bother whether I know the story or not. [coolcat123]
