I have a friend who buys movies pretty regularly. The problem is that most of them he's never seen before. Instead of renting it before buying he just buys. So he's got a collection that consists of a lot of movies he'll never watch again.
Personally, I only buy movies that I really liked. There are some cases where I'll buy the movie before I see it. Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia, for example.

I only buy movies that I really like. I may see them at the cinema and like the film so much that I plan to buy a copy of it. I sometimes rent movies then if I don't like them I have not wasted my money. I would only buy a movie before I have seen it if i have heard a great deal about it and feel sure that I will like it. I did choose two films in this way and now wish that I had not. One of them was very boring and the other was very frightening. [maximax8]
Hello! Before we used to buy original DVDs, but my stepson only breaks them and it was just a waste of money. So we decided not to buy original ones anymore. There's a DVD shop close to your house and they make copies from original DVDs and sells them in a very cheap price. I know it's kinda illegal but it's normal here and the quality is really good. Now, we buy DVDs every weekend at least 5, we buy those movies that we haven't seen yet. I actually don't like watching movies again and again, well, unless it's my fave and I really like it. In Philippines I do have some collections of VCDs and DVDs of movies that I really like and watch them again whenever I fancy it. Thanks for sharing *smile* ciao! =) [fab315]
it makes sense what you īre doing, i personally donīt do it ,i only buy original movies, but for example in costa rica ,blockbuster had to close because no one was renting their movies, the government only ask the dvd shop to buy at least one original dvd and the they can burn as many as they like. again, nothing like original movies where you get all the nice features and also helping to promote the industry, dont forget thereīs a whole process and a lot of families involved in this industry. The only reason to buy a film is because you love it so that you want to see it over and over again.I own 100's of films because when i saw it the first time I thought I think I am going to need my own copy.Suggestion. If your friend lives near a F.Y. E. store he can sell his used DVDs. The F.Y.E. near me buys and sells used DVDs and CDs. [sarahruthbeth22]
Seeing the scenes of the latest films sounds like fun. These days the movie trailers are better than the whole film. [sarahruthbeth22]
Generally I'll only buy a movie if I've seen it before and if I really like it. Pretty much the only time I'll buy a movie without seeing it is if I get a really good deal on it (like the sales on previously viewed dvds at the movie rental place). [shamrock_lassie]
your friend probably like to collect movies, even though heīll never watch it again, my quess is the feeling he must have from collecting all those dvdīs. i loved movies so much that i own a dvd rental store, i dont watch all the movies because some of them are just plain boring. if your friend is happy about his collection then let it be. cheers [wwongpa]
ya i will also buy dvd's. suppose i like some movies and they are so good that i can see them for every one week. only such typeof movie dvd's i will buy [chilukala]
At my place here almost everyone is so used to buying pirated movies that many of us have even forgotten that it is actually a very serious offense. Sadly, I have not yet forgotten that I am actually breaking the law but have also followed the trend. I too go to this place which is like a huge underground shopping complex where these movies are available in pirated digital video discs at around 1/5th the price. Frankly speaking I don't think people want to spend so much more when they get so much for so less. When getting these movies at such low prices, I really don't care much if it's good or not. I just check the newspapers, and then buy every movie with a positive review. I think I even lost some of them, but at prices at which all of us get them, we all actually never care. [amishagg]
I always rent the movie before buying it. I used to buy them once in awhile without renting them first and sometimes they were horrible and I just wasted my money. I use netflix to rent my movies so I can deicde which ones are worth buying. [hip2bemom]
I buy a lot movie as i see many and i really like many of them and i always try to make a good collection of different kind of movies categorically---like comedy (from very old age to recent one), horror (same), Romance same, Family movies....this way or sometime collection of artists, I really like to get the good collection but i see the olds sometime or the relatively new sometime as i love seeing movie and its a good weekend work for me, I love seeing the once seen movies too [cmsk2005]
lol, i got an uncle who does that. its funny, but i guess he likes his movie collection that builds up. [TSx028]
i love movies too and that so good, i used to see movies coz of me friends, they used to see around 3 or 4 movies per day, and i used too, i don`t interest in most of them so i choose the romance movies for exp ( sweet November) [Loverknight123456]
see i buy because you can get rid of the viruses on the net,and also i buy only family watchable movies.also if it is a original i can give it to my friends who will see them and return backif it is downlaoded one also they will see byt they will think twice becaus eof the viruses. this is what i feel. [ssf12ster]
I'm just like your friend. I buys movies because the dvd store is closer than the rent store, and we didn't have the time limit. [dewi30]
For the most part, I buy the movie only after I've seen it. Nothing worse than putting money out on a movie that stinks. Like yourself, I do make exceptions: Resident Evil. [trutallica]
i personaly buy a tons and tons of movie, but i do that because i resell them for a few extra bucks, other than that i only buy movies that i like, and watch them over and over again. [adidas7878]
Well I buy a lot of movies on dvd... lots that I haven't seen before, some that I have. The main reason is cost. A handful of months after a movie has been out over here (Australia), it'll be reduced to a retail of about $13. So say about $10US. Now if you rent something, it's gonna cost you up to $7 for a night or week anyways. For that extra money, I'd rather just straight out buy it. On the chance that I don't like it, I'll just whack it on ebay and get almost what I paid for it. Still works out cheaper than renting. [dArtagnan]
I feel the same way. I just can't buy and collect movies. I use a rental service for DVDs anyway, so if there is a movie I want to see I will just rent it. And later on, if I feel like I want to see it again, I will rent it again. There is really no point in buying movies as far as I can see. Because once you watch it, you just put it on your shelf, and there it sits, unused and just basically collects dust. I tried to start a movie collection once, but I ended up just selling everything. It is really just a waste of time for me. I'm the type of person that once I have watched a movie once, I really don't want to see it again, so having a movie coleection would not make any sense for me. Good post! [Geminigirl]
I tend to rent the movie first then if I like it buy it. We have a pretty big selection at our house. The only movies I would buy without renting first are parts of series (like harry potter) or a sequel to a movie I already own. [sweetdesign]
I buy DVD's because sometimes it's almost as cheap to buy them as it is to rent them. It costs about 5 Euro to rent a DVD here, and it only costs a little more to buy them. It seems a waste to pay 5 Euro for something you have to return a day later, when you can instead spend 8 Euro and have something to keep and watch whenever you like. I never buy expensive movies on DVD, I wait a few months for the price to go down. Sometimes you can even buy ex-rental DVD's for 4 or 5 Euro. I do spend a fortune on music related DVD's though. I can watch them over and over again, especially my Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix DVD's. [crispeater]
I buy movies' DVDs or CDs very rarely .I only buy if I liked the movie very much and plan to see it time and again. Otherwise,I can watch movies on Television Channels also .Or I can buy DVDs or CDs on rent also. [ptrikha1]
i have not bought a movie for a long time ,i only buy movies that i know i can watch over and over again ,movies like 300,kingkong,matrix,lord of the rings, and some few others are the ones i buy because i love watching them over and over again [reddevil1]
I do the same thing too. I don't buy that much of movie cuz I have cable so I can watch them all after they release from the theater. I like to college scary move the most, but only the good scary one tho. [smileonstar]
I buy movies that I really liked and know that I will watch again. I also have a friend that is movie crazy. He pretty much buys whatever new dvds came out every week. His collection is enormous and he hasn't even watched them all. He even buys movies that everyone has told him are not good, then he gets them, watches them and agrees that the movie wasn't any good. I guess it's like any other collector's addiction though. [maybebaby]
I buy a lot of the really cheap movies. :D I buy movies on Half.com and from the $5.00 table at Wal Mart. If I don't like them, then I sell them on Half.com or eBay. But, when I buy them so cheaply, it doesn't cost as much as renting them. And, it costs a lot less than going to see them at the theater. [myfanwy65]
I love a bargain too! I also love that the movies that you buy for $5 at your local shop can be the funniest b-grade movies that you can find anywhere. A movie can be entertaining in many ways, getting yourself a comedy that is not meant to be a comedy can be better than any that are showing at the theater! [madebyrobyn]
sometimes, i do buy movies that im not familiar with. sometimes the cover picture would interest me and sometimes the title. i'd surely buy it if both the cover picture and title are interesting. ^__^ but if i buy it together with a movie i've been waiting for, i wouldnt watch it immediately. i'd reserve it for another day and i'd watch first the movie that i've waited for. ^__^ [secretbear]
I only buy movies that I really like. In fact if it's a new movie I'll rent it first and then if I like it I'll buy it. The one time I broke that movie was with fear.com I bought it b/c it looked like a good movie...I hate that movie. Hubby will watch it every once in awhile but otherwise it just sits on the shelf. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~ [twoey68]
i prefer gettings the dvd of movies for free, from anyone. the costs are prohibitive in my country. [tomkite]
We mostly buy movies because we are not good at returning rentals and it ends up costing us more when we don't return them for weeks on end! Sounds slack, I know. So we built ourselves up a huge amount of movies until we got pay tv - now we don't buy or borrow anymore movies. We are too busy watching our favourite shows on tv. I love Chronicles of Narnia too! [madebyrobyn]
I usually only buy movies that I have seen and know I will watch over and over again. The exception is a movie I really wanted to see and missed so I wait until it's in the bargin bin of $5.00 or so and will take the chance and buy it. I figure I couldn't go to a movie for that price and if I only watch it once I won't be out much. I can always sell it too. I've been really cutting back on buying movies lately to only one I will really, really use a lot. Otherwise it seems a waste to buy something you only watch once. [Aussiepup113]
Yes my husband and I are like you we usually by the movie after we've seen it and if we liked it. There are times when I am like your friend though and buy one because well the title sounds good or something and not really like it and it will sit on the shelf...lol [shooie]
I'll buy a movie if I KNOW I love it and will want to watch it over and over again. IN the meantime, we have netflix, so we can watch a bunch of movies in one month for the price of seeing one at the theatre. if we really like something, we might buy it, but it has to be fabulous. I also have a friend that buys movies at the store, you know, that bin of $9.99 movies. He has NO idea if they are good or bad or whatever, but just buys them if he thinks they might be good. And yeah, he has a pile of movies he will never watch again! [cassidy22]
