Would You Rather Go To The Movies Or Rent A Movie

I wanna go to the movies 'cause it's more fun to watch in a big screen, dolby surround, theater environment but of course renting a movie is cheaper. So, me and my friends or family go to the mall for movies just occasionally or at least twice a month and we just usually rent DVD and watch at home. What do you prefer?happy

Well, nowadays everyone has their own "home theatre" system, so it is much more convenient to watch a movie at home where you can pause it, go to the bathroom, get a snack, whatever. Going to the theatre is an experience that can't be beaten, but with the prices they charge and their uncomfortable seats, I rarely go any more. Also, I find it really gross that the floors feel greasy like they are slathered with butter. (Anyone else notice that?) [daneg33]
So far with my experience going to theaters, I haven't noticed greasy floors. Well, I guess that depends to the management. What I don't like when going to the theater though is when there's a group of people who were like bees and keep buzzing and buzzing and chatting, it's annoying specially when you're really concentrating watching the film. [the_dutchess]

I prefer to rent a movie and look at it at home. It´s more cheaper, you sit more comfortable at home and you can switch off some minutes if you want to do something else [Twist_and_shout]
Yeah, that's some of the advantages watching at home happy [the_dutchess]

I prefer to rent a movie cause,is much more convenient for me to do that and watch it at later hours ...rather than drive to a theater >traffic jam>people. [fren45]

we used to rent a dvd or a vcd than watching in the big screen. or im buying the pirated one.. hahahaaha [carrine]
yeah and its cheaper than the original one.. and its good ,, good for one month LOL [carrine]

I always prefer seeing movies in the theater, but I do rent DVDs as well. There is nothing better than seeing the movie on the big screen...there is so much more detail, particularly if it is a movie set in a foreign country. If I have a choice, I will go to the movies instead of renting. And the movie theater I belong to has a discount card, which I put to good use. Also friends know me so well that often I get movie tickets (for use anytime) on my birthday or as Christmas gifts. Still, I do watch DVDs at home, and I appreciate having that option because a lot of Indies never make it to my town. Now that I don't live in Chicago anymore, I miss a lot of the international and Indie films I used to see in the theater. Seeing them on DVD is my only choice. I guess you can say, I just love movies in any form! happylolhappy [AnythngArt]
I like watching Indie movies too, I think they're simply great, the story and everything. You're right, it's so much different when you're in theater watching movies. I wish I also have a discount card like yours. Thanks for responding. [the_dutchess]

Well Dutchess, I do love going to the movies, but I don't do it much anymore because of the cost! I also think its a little silly to see a movie that is going to be on DVD in a few weeks. Things just come out so quickly these days. I do go to the movies for certain things, thoug. I like to go every few months with my young daughter to see a Disney Pixar film. They are really entertaining on the big screen. I also can only see the Harry Potter movies big screen. [ljbinkop]
I can't wait to see Harry Potter this year! I'm such fan. I was so sad when it got canceled last year so I was really hoping that I could get to see it and I would definitely be watching on the big screen! Just hope that it's worth the wait. [the_dutchess]

If you house has a sorround speakers and a huge LCD TV , then i would suggest you to rent the movies , for your family will get to watch it together, especially when it is a horror movie, some of your siblings might screamed, unlike in cinema, you cant scream, cant move till like after two hours later or you would missed some scenes. [heehaw78]

going to the theater has always been a preference for me. but now that prioces has gone up, mostly, i wait for my friends' evaluation of the movie. if ever if it's worth watching it or not. if ever i like the movie, that's the time i buy the dvd (pirated or not - LOL) so that i could watch at the convenience of our home. =) but then, there's this site in the internet which are free to be viewed so sometimes i go here first than in theaters. =) [totallyundecided]
i know right? though sometimes i feel guilty watching their ads regarding about piracy befoer the movie starts but money these days can't really be spent on everything. =) [totallyundecided]

I prefer going to the movies but I don't get to do it that often, mainly because it can be expensive and I don't have anyone to go with me, my husband won't go, he'd rather stay home and watch movies. The only time I go is if one of our nephews is visiting and as a treat I'll take him to the movies, most of the time we just rent them. I have a big screen at home and surround sound too, but theres nothing like that movie popcorn...haha. [walijo2008]
We don't go to the movies very often too because it's not that practical nowadays. We just go if there's really a good film that's worth it. Thanks for responding. [the_dutchess]

I truly prefer to rent them and I get my movies via blockbuster.com. I can keep the movie as long as I want and watch it as many times as I want until I feel like returning it. I only pay $6 a month! [leonelaphotography]

I love going to the movies as it always feels like a bit of a treat. And I do prefer to watch a movie in the cinema for certain genres i.e thrillers and horrors, or movies that are forecast to be big hits. However, going to the cinema can prove to be an expensive hobby if its something which is done on a regular basis, so I usually do rent a movie and watch it at home, or try and catch it on TV. Watching films at home is also nice in it's own way though as it is cosy, and you can take take breaks, grab food etc at your own convenience [UK_Shree]

me and wife always watch movie, then when we like the movie we buy dvd so we can watch it over and over again. but now that we have a three year old child there is no way that we can watch movie. but it is okay we will have to wait for the release on dvd then we can watch it. i dont want to rent for there are no rentals near at our place [se7enthbird]
It's nice to hear that you guys always consider your kid with everything that you do, lucky kiddo. Thanks for responding. [the_dutchess]

there is no renting business of DVD when the film is running on theatres... mostly in my country we dont watch films on DVD...we would go to theater to see the film...with surround digital sound, 70mm screen, with lot of people surrounded us , clappong and whistling...this habit is very much in theaters..people found loving it...usually DVD business is strictly prohibited, the producers are taking the movie for a huge amount and the theater owners are getting for a huge amount, so no DVD work...we have to watch only in theater... happy mylotting... [gunagohan]
Interesting. I guess the movie industry must be going very well there in your country. Good luck and have fun watching movies. [the_dutchess]

watching movie is not a good idea for us for we are five members of our family and that would be so expensive for our budget. yes, i can not remember anymore when was the last time i watched movie. but my children together with my sisters they had watched movies and i think the last one was twilight. if i like something i just wait for my other sister to send a dvd copy. its okay i can wait for that. i dont go to rentals for some of the dvd or vcd they have hasa lot of scratches already and it is difficult to watch. [roniroxas]
hmmm thanks but i dont like watching movies on the pc, and about bringing only one child when i wantto watch a movie is not a good idea too. kids are kids i am sure there will be jealousy build up if i only bring one. yes i do treat myself. i go out alone and get a massage that is much better for me than a movie. rolleyes [roniroxas]

I enjoy going to movie theaters, being able to watch movies that just came out. But I'm very much a homebody and just prefer the comfort of my sofa. At home I can even lay down while I watch a movie. Try that in a crowded theater. Plus, as others have said, it's waaaay cheaper to just rent DVD's. I am a member of Netflix and all I have to do is make it as far as my mailbox to get a new movie. The selection is awesome and the arrival time is actually pretty short, since they have their Distribution Centers all over the country. Plus you can sit in your own home and brows tons of movies to see which ones you want. Anyway, watching movies at home with my surround sound system, to me, is even better than the theater. I don't have to listen to people crackling their candy wrappers, or slurping their drinks. There is nobody sitting behind me asking their parter or friend questions (I hate that). At to top it all off, I can go right to bed after a late night movie viewing. [_soonernation_]
That's one thing that's really annoying when you're in the theater, having to listen to other people's noise. Thanks for the info about Netflix, seems that they really have a good service. [the_dutchess]

I used to love going to the movies. I like deciding what to see, getting together with friends, buying some popcorn, watching the movie and then discussing with others who had seen it. Nowadays, though, it's just so expensive. the tickets are high, the concessions are high...and it's really bad if you are paying for another person or poeple. So I usually just stay at home and atch movies on pay-per-view. [uicbear]

Hi the dutchess, I like to watch movies in the comfort of my home, but there are some special movies that i really prefer to watch them in the theaters, Have a good day! [zabawaus]
Hi zabawaus! Thanks for responding. [the_dutchess]

Honestly to say, i just rent movies and watch them at home more often, renting movie seems cheaper. but some movies seems more enjoyable when they are watched in the theater, so sometimes i would go the theater with my friends when we feel watching this type movie in the theater would give us more fun.By the way, the black cat icon behind your name seems so lovely. [xianshuixyz]

They just opened a $3 theatere down the street from us it is so nice to watch a movie on a big screen. It is an older theatere but it is well worth it for $3. They show movies that have been out for a while there but that is just fine with me. We just wait a little longer to see the movie. The popcorn and candy and drinks are still expensive though. [patriciaqualls]

i haven't gone to the movies for ages. the last time was harry potter prisoner af azkaban so that was a long time ago and my bestfriend said that we should go when harry potter's latest would be shown. wow from harry potter to harry potter lol and we're 30+ years old. but i rather watch at home because when i really like a movie, i watch it over and over again or sometimes i just want to watch the old same scenes. [mamalev]
thanks, actually it's my bestfriend who really loves to watch harry potter movies she even compares it to the book. as for me, i liked watching it but the book i've never read. [mamalev]

In my case, sometimes i prefer to go to the movies.as you said, big screen and perfect sound ,but i also see movies online.many free movies online.seldom rent a movie [cindyhxf]

i prefer going to the cinemas IF im with friends or loved ones and the movie is worth it haha and there are very rare movies i really look forward to watching in movie theaters and sometimes all good movies are shown almost in the same month or so. and most of the time i will just rent a movie and watch it at home, because it is cheaper.=) [eabaterina]

Its a lot more fun in the cinema, no matter if you in your house have an excellent sound system and an awesome TV. [juliotostado]

ost of the time I'd prefer to watch them in my own home. Cheaper and better food, I can watch in my pajama's etc. But once in a while I want to go out. Treat the grandkids, or it's a movie that has great cinematography that I really want to see on a big screen, then I go out.happy [KatieDidit]

I prefer going to watch movie at movie house because I can feel the movie being watched through big screen and dolby surround sound. Plus the fact that going out with friends or family or special someone while watching is a good thing. I really miss watching movies, I think the last time I went to mall and watch movie was last year and I cant remember what month was that.sad [anne12d]

I prefer to watch at home. because i can freely doing my habits, such as eating will watching, lying on the bed and others thing that make my feel enjoy with it. and at home you can paused the movie all the time, so you cannot missed the scene when you go to bathroom, kitchen or others place... That's for me. it is up to you boy and girl [cahyorini]

I definately prefer renting over going to the theatre. You can pause to go to the bathroom, you can eat your own food, you control the volume, and its a lot cheaper [jayrod28542]

Yes of course it is more fun to watch movie than to rent a movie. But i guess, it depends to the financial situation especially now a days. [Gwapako_28]

i would rather goto a movie with my friends. coz stayin home and watchin a movie all by myself is kinda not my thing. But of coz.. I do watch movies at home when im really bored. lol [knaphih]

i would rather rent a movie. i think it's alot more comfertable being at home, under blankets, cuddled up on your bed or sofa. eating as much pop corn as you want, and having someone with you that you can cuddle with. [Xxmookie621xX]

I choose to rent a movie. Cinema tickets nowadays are equivalent to renting or are even more expensive. I choose to rent because i love watching movies at the comfort of our home. At home i can watch them anytime and i can eat anything that's available at home. I can watch the movie to too for as many times as i want. The only problem is the returning of the dvd. I get lazy sometimes. Watching a movie in cinema is fun too but i want to watch in theatres if i have a girlfriend because it will be more fun than watching alone. [modstar]

I have not been to the movies in forever! I rather rent which I do once in awhile! It is a heck of alot cheaper! Alot! Going to the movies is expensive! Not to mention the money you spend on soda and snacks! Forget it! I'll rent a movie and stay home and pop my own popcorn! [blue65packer]

well, i've got to confess that cinema is the best place ever for ENJOYING movies in the aspect of audio & video effect..... there are only a few fixed movies on show in the cinema and they're almost the same in the several cinemas in the same city. what if i want to watch some good old classic ones? so here comes a third opiton : the internet. i guess u can retrieve almost all the movies from the net. plus, if i have time and wanna feel the atmosphere of enjoying movies, i'll go to the movies :D [Hawkblizzard]

If the movie has sound effect dramatized into the clip like majority of sci-fiction, then i will opt for theater setting because i can enjoy the dolby surround enhance sound system most theater had. If not, i prefer to watch at home. [lampar]

I would rather go out. It is not just about watching the movie but we usually go out to eat before or after. I do not buy snacks there (too expensive and all junk, anyway, so I might bring something to snack on, if I will not be going out to eat, but usually we do. It is fun with certain movies, at home though, with a bunch of people, like Mama Mia. [nanajanet]

Although I can't afford to go as often as I would like I definitely prefer the movies. I love movies to escape from every day life into someone else's and there is nothing like watching a film on the big screen. I do rent DVDs as well though. [paula27661]

I would prefer renting movies to watch at home since they are cheaper. Otherwise I'd participate in lucky draws that give out free movie preview vouchers by sending an sms. So far I've successfully won twice in the draw. I guess in this bleak economic downturn, it is ok to forgo the bigger screen, aircon and captivating surround sound. There's a good side of watching movies at home is that I can fully enjoy my privacy. [naka75]
Oh yeah the lucky draw is a collaboration between the cinemas and the newspaper, and is a win-win for both parties, ie. attract more customers to cinemas and more readers for the papers. I'm actually quite enticed to participate in more promotions. When you participate as fast as the latest promotion is released on the papers, the chance of getting the vouchers is quite good. And the sponsor is quite generous, as they give away accessories like movie poster, notepads, stickers etc. I must agree it's quite a successful marketing strategy, and is one way to ensure the survival of the newspapers. [naka75]

personally I'd rather go to the movies, as it very fun and for 2 hours you forget everything about the world and it's like the whole world disappear and the only thing that matters is whatever playing on the screen when I was younger I used to go to the movies at least once a week, not I am busy working and I hardly have time to go to the movies sad, here in Egypt the difference between renting a movie and going to the movies is not that high at all. happy mylotting [agirlfromtomorrow]

Well i love to watch movies on the big screen and most of the movies i do watch in the cinema only.. In the month i watch 7-8 movies around.. and never miss the bollwood movies in the thetre.. but as far as hollywood movies i prefer to buy Cd or DVD so that i can better watch at home.. because english is my second language some time i can't understand waht they are saying then i can listen by reversing the movies in the home.. So i always prefer to watch english in the home so i can bette understand the movie.. [njc2009]

I usually go out for a movie and hardly rented any movie. My family feels that the essence of the movie goes off as and when you watch it on television set. I think the same and so I take the pains to go to the theatre. [dropofrain]

yeah actually i do really love to watch movies on the cinema, but when i have a lot of to do or busy and have no times to go to cinema, i would rather to rent movies. I have mini theatre to at home so the sound also like in the cinema but different between home theatre and cinema are the screen and the experience. [benifix]

I rarelygo to multiplexes and everytime i go to watch movie i prefer multiplex because its a diffrent style and comforte if we are paying in any ways why not sophasticated?? i hardly see any movies and that's why i jus prefer good multiplexes with some extra features in there [Archie0]

Going to movies is a good thing rather to rent a movie.Sitting and watching a movie inside four walls is not a healthy thing.Going out to a movie with friends will ease ur tension..i love going to a movie [liferokz1]

i like both, i like watching at home if i just want to relax and at the same time i like going to the movies occasionally too so i get to get out of the house and wander around =D [enciel]

we usually rent or buy DVD's and watch them at home with 4 kids it's alot easier it never fails whenever we try to go somebody has to go to the bathroom or somebody is wanting something so its easier just to watch movies at home that way everyone is comfotable not to mention we can have whatever snacks and food we want. that's another thing the prices of their snacks and drinks are outrageous. [christylynn]

I prefer to go to the cinema because it I like seeing films in the big screen. Having a little child and no nanny or anybody to babysit I can't go more than once or twice a year. Otherwise I see films on the TV or the computer screen. Those are the only alternatives. [overwings]

I would rent a movie. I find going to the theater is just very expensive and the seats are never that comfortable. At home, we can watch it in comfort, pause it whilst we go to get a coffee or whatever.. Much better for me. happy. Derek [derek_a]

It depends on the movie. If it's something I really want to see then the theater is fun because it becomes an entire experience. But if it's something I just sort of want to see then at home so I can do other things while I watch it if it isn't good. I watch tons of movies each month though so it varies for me. I love movies! [entrepreneurgirl]

well i prefer to rent coz u can pause it if u need a wee and itds cheaper [shahzadh]

I get to do both, watching movies from the theater itself and right at the convenience of our home with dvds or cable channels. Although through dvds is more practical, I enjoy watching it more from the cinema. I don't know why but I guess there's a thrill feeling of watching along with everyone else and the aura of the actual theater. Plus, I get to concentrate more on the movie. Whereas, at home, I can't sit still. I keep getting up, getting distracted in doing something else instead of watching the whole movie through. In the theater, it's like I've got no choice but to sit right there. HAHAHAA But I guess maybe that's just me. [MariaD]

to me it depends on what movie is playing. there are some i prefer to see at the theater. most though i can happily watch in the comfort of my own home.i do liek the feel of theater and how you can feel totally pulled in by it all. [mlw32785]

I can relax when i rent DVD and watch at home. If they have something new movies, i will go to the theater. So, both is good but usually i watch at home.happy [May2k8]

I definitly much rather prefer going out to the movies then staying in and watching a movie. I think it is more fun and even though it cost more it is worth it. The screen is huge and you can take as many people as ypu like with you. Also the movie theater has new movies instead of old movies that everyone has already seen already. [lala501]

our town has a drive in theatre that only costs $6 perperson and it is always for 2 movies. So we like to go to the frive in. we also have a netflix membership, and so there is almost always a new movie for us to watch waiting at home. we do not have cable so it is our alternative (and still cheaper.) I have not been in a regular theatre to see a movie in over 4 years, it is just not worth the cost in comparison to our other options [okkidokitokki]

Right now I would rather go to the movies since its been months since ive gone to the movies last movie I went to go see the the day the earth stood still last december. Mainly because there havnt been to many good movies out even though I do want to see street fighter that looks pretty good and hopefully it is good. [arcidy]

I think renting is much cheaper and convenient because you will be watching it at the comfort of your home. If doesn't matter is the screen is not that big. The most important is that you can watch it with the whole family and friends and you can prepare a nice food to eat while watching. You don;t need to buy food.. and pay tickets for the movie.. Lol.. you can watch as many movies as you want while you are at home.happyhappy [Bebs08]

I just answered a similar discussion about this by someone else, but I prefer to rent the movies because it's cheaper and you can pause during pee break without risking your money. I like the cinema for the sound and the fact that you feel like you are in the scene because the screen is so big, but I wouldn't choose the cinema over renting because it can be ruined by annoying audiences. [Lore2009]

we go to the movies maybe once or twice a year. its just too expensive to go and see a movie for a family of 4, even to rent a movie costs quite a bit. we get some movies for free from the library and make our own popcorn! [cher913]

I would much rather sit at home than to go to the theater. I can make my own popcorn and do not have to pay $10 for popcorn and a drink. In the last 10 years I have been to the theater once!! I rarely rent movies either. I just saw "The Devil Wears Prada" about a month ago for the first time. It was on TV. If I have patience it will eventually come on TV. So, no need in paying for something I can wait and see for free. But I would much rather rent a movie than go to the theater given the choice. [SusanShayAvon]

I occasionally like going to the theater, but being that they are so expensive, I tend to prefer hitting the matinée when I do go, otherwise I prefer sitting at home on my comfy couch, curled up with a blanket and a hot cup of coffee. Plus at home there are no sticky floors, no screaming kids, talking teenagers, or the guy with the big head sitting in front of me. LOL! [MichGurl]

I only like going to the movies if the movie is action, historical or horror, because you can get much more into the movie that way. Comedy I may either watch in the movies or rent, I don't particularly mind either way. I find most romance flicks and such, however, to be better suited for renting. I just get bored in a big theater with so much sound and nothing going on. :P [tahiel]

Of course I like to go to halls. But nowadays in India, it is costly and full of danger. Any moment there may be a terrorist attack. So, I like to bring DVDs athome and enjoy in homely environment. [prasanta]

I do like to go to the movies as often as I can, because it seems like I'm so impatient waiting for the movie (that I liked) to come out on dvd. There are some movie theaters prices dropping around where I live (such as $6.50). I just can't get comfortable in a theater seat. On the other hand, I love to watch dvd's at home, that way I can get my own drinks, snacks, and paused the movie while I use the restroom. [golddrizzle71]

i prefer to watch movie in the movie house...even more when im with my friends..i appreciate the movie when im watching it in a big screen..lol!..^^ [mystic888soul]
